Thank you so much for this!!! Your video is literally the only thing I could find that explained exactly what I was looking for. You just saved me so much headache!
Very nice of you to make this video! I wasn't quite able to eliminate all wind noise in my clips, but it's certainly an improvement. That's what I get for shooting with the internal mics, the wind noise is super loud and covers the entire low to mid spectrum. I already bought an external mic with one of these fuzzy covers, works great against wind!
Thanks Ian, you were right, this is so much easier than the other (non-existent) methods out there, specifically for wind sounds (I'm at a seaside location with strong winds)
Thanks Ian, I've had problems with in car noise, so I went back and put this on my audio tracks that were effected & boom it disappeared & didn't effect the voice, your a legend thanks
Thank you so much! My hats off to you! I am editing a video for a not-for-profit organisation and managed to completely reduce the wind sound in the background.
Thank you so much for making this video, I was so frustrated that the noise reduction feature did practically nothing to reduce wind noise. Wish I could "like" the video twice!
I went over the steps repeatedly. when I choose vocal channel I get the 1st window that you closed. I close, but then whether I put the vocal channel on the timeline box to the left, timeline above or on a single clip, When I open the inspector and click on the area I'd put it, I don't get that window that says vocal channel. It's audio but volume, pan, pitch, speed change, EQ. I ws on the Fairlight. went back since you were on edit and tried there and putting on the timeline, I didn't even get the 1st EQ box. Then I tried on a clip and got that and closed but then the Inspector had even less.
@@IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel I guess we had different wind lol. I do find it may take a few seconds for an effect to work with no indication when it starts working.
I knew not getting rid of windnoise was just a lack of my skill in video editing but still I almost ended up buying a new microphone. No I don't have to do that anymore. Thanks!
Thanks. A good mic helps, but more than that you need a dead cat on it, as they call it. But even then if the wind was strong like here then further editing is needed no matter the equipment.
@@IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel I do have a Rode shotgun mic. It's just really windy wherever I go and probably some degree of user error. I know how to photograph but still absolute beginner when it comes to videography and audio. Anyway just uploaded a video where I applied the filter and the wind sound is fine. Thanks :)
Hi. It can depending on how deep your voice is. It's often a bit of a trade-off, but you can also use the equaliser to make other adjustments to compensate.
First of all, super helpful video. However, for me, it somehow does not work in Davinci 17? I noticed that the High Pass In and High Pass Frequency are not in the inspector tab anymore. Any ideas on why the effect might not work?
Thanks. Sorry I have no idea about Davinci 17, but I would imagine it is somewhere in the fairlight tab. Have you looked there? Maybe in the equalizer.
I found it. Thank you. Somehow it just does not make a noticeable difference, even if I put it at the highest frequency of 300? Wind is very much present. Maybe only after it renders.
@@HillsDronephotography If you are using Davinci 17 then it has moved. Select the clip or timeline where you have placed the vocal channel and then go up to the inspector panel on the right and you'll find it in effects.
@@IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel great mate cheers for that got it. I had to unclip the audio from the clip fingers crossed it works, thank you ever so much, don't suppose you know anything about luts all of a sudden my luts are not changing after applied 🤦♂️
the wind in your video is not that bad, I had a video with very strong wind, I can still hear the voice but there is a lot of wind noise which makes it very unprofessional. But this option didn't help at all, I think, even put to max, the wind was still very present.
Same here, unfortunaterly. With me the wind was intermittent gusts, rather than a constant background rumble. So I think they were coming in at a higher frequency and not so easy to separate from my voice-over. Oh well. Worth a try, anyway.
Hi. Did you have a wind protector on your mic while filming? This technique doesn't get rid of the sound, but takes the bass out of it so it's less rumbly and annoying. It works best if you already had the wind protector, but if not then you could still hear the wind as it will be much louder, but you should be able to lessen the effects of it. Also use the other tools alongside it.
@@IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel nope I had no wind protector. I used only the internal microphone of a DJI action 2. Honestly I don't know what most settings in Davin I actually do 🤣🤣. I think it softened the noise somehow, but I am not 100% sure. It also changes the other "wanted" sounds I think. It seems like I am rather a person that would like to do better production first because then editing is easier (less complicated) 😅. I should get a mic.
@@fjellyo3261 You need to play around with all the other equalizer settings to compensate. And yes, get an external mic and wind protector. Makes a huge difference.

Noise Reduction 'Speech Mode' is worth a try, worked better for me than the above.

you absolute star , thanks
You are welcome
Thanks..it is very helpful..earlier I used to apply noise reduction but it used to bring down the volume of entire audio... this is much better way!
You are welcome. I found the same. WInd noise is a low frequency sound so the high pass filter targets that only.
5:50 I found that you can be more extreme with the high pass and then restore the missing voice bass afterwards with an eq on the main output
Yes that's true. As I say, you just need to play around with all the other settings to get it all right.
Is there something that can be done with an equalizer to make the voice less "tinny" after applying the high pass filter?
Yes, you can play around with the other settings to bring some depth back to the voice and other areas.
Thank you for the advice!
