1st time sculptor, with Medium Monster Clay is the foil application an absolutely necessary step? I assume that I can just make do with extra coiled wire for support and the clay like with this statue's arm. Thanks in advance for answering my question.
Hi! You are correct, it is not necessary but it helps create more texture for the clay to grab on to, opposed to bare wire. There are other ways to do this such as adding the coiled wire as you mentioned.
What kind of clay is this? Isn't it ordinary clay? Is it for hardened clay? I don't know how to do it. I want to make some kind of character for animation, but I don't know how to start. First I probably need to make armatures, then I don't know what to do next... Then finally I add colored clay
In this video we used a product called Klean Klay. This specific product is no longer available, but it was an oil-based clay and we carry several of these. Products like Chavant's Clayette and NSP, or Monster Clay are good alternatives. These oil-based clays do not dry and are never fired, so you can take your time working on your sculpt. They are also compatible with most moulding rubbers which is ideal. Other clays like air dry clay or earthen clay may contain ingredients that react negatively toward moulding rubbers.
