Nice detailed review with useful info. Got the AMD Advantage model of this with a Ryzen 9 7945 and exclusive Radeon RX 7900M 16GB GPU. Price has dropped to $1600 in the used market only a year after that model has released. About $1200 below MSRP.
You would think this might be a rather long video, nevertheless, if you are about to and you have already made up your mind to buy one of these laptops, the video becomes very interesting, amusing, clarifying and very useful to a simple mortal who is expecting reliability from a laptop, more than a gaming experience. Tks. a zillion for sharing such a clarifying and educational video. Highly appreciated. I guess we have taken the right choice on buying one of these as our new laptop. Kind regards.
Thank you for the review, Michael. I just ordered the M18 strictly for photo and video editing, not gaming. My 6 year old Inspiron has started having a hard time editing photos with Lightroom, Photoshop, and On1 software. Think I'll be happy with Alienware M18 for editing , or is this overkill (wow, 64 gb ram and 4 terabyte ssd).
I like my 17.3 inch laptop I got in 2017 because the RGB color was around the whole border of the screen and the bottom part and the keyboard the whole thing lit up now the laptop only lights up in the back where the cooling vents are and maybe on the side.
I upgraded the ram, the cache inside the microprocessor, either be it AMD or Intel, it never can guess what memory it needs to utilize to accomplish the task. If you visualize a city; moving objects (0), permanent objects (1), static background (2), scene transforms (3), the actual definitions are compilled into tables, just like a sinusoidal wave on your Casio calculator. So instead of the Casio, my days of engineering are way behind me, i got 32GB 6000 MTS CL38, this cuts the waiting time down significantly for everyday tasks. Ironing the kids school uniforms, making vegan slushies, even making church people proud with bigger donations, the young guys dig that humility alot.
I own an m18r2. My biggest complaint is cooling. I've got the largest IETS platform cooling unit I've used since the m18 arrived. I put that bad boy on max fan speed (2800rpm) and still have crazy temps and variation in temps. I'll have cores 100* and 65*. Tbh for a 4k laptop I was pretty let down at the cooling issues. Besides that though, pretty beefy "laptop". I14900 Rtx4090 64gb ram 5 tb storage (1tb from Dell, 4tb WD black).
One question, why did you guys put an SD card on the back ? Not super comfortable to swipe SD cards if you are working on content:( and the Ethernet is on the side? Why?
For it's desired audience, professional gamers that attend tournaments, I like it. For casual gamers, overkill. A desktop setup or smaller gaming laptop would suffice.
Do u think these m18 r2 specs are still good for gaming and streaming? Also any advice from others would help out alot to. 14th Gen Intel® Core™i7 14700HX (20-Core, 33MB L3 Cache, up to 5.5GHz Max Turbo Frequency) Graphics Card NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 4070, 8 GB GDDR6 Display 18" QHD+ (2560 x 1600) 165Hz, 3ms, ComfortView Plus, NVIDIA G-SYNC + DDS, 100% DCI-P3, FHD IR Camera Memory 16 GB: 2 x 8 GB, DDR5, 5600 MT/s, non-ECC, dual-channel Storage 1 TB, M.2, PCIe NVMe, SSD
i have the m18r2 with a i9 14th gen. The alienware command center shows the cpu temp consistently in the mid 75c to 80c with just normal use. Is this normal?
as in you think it is too hot? i think this is normal. thats from the experience of having a MSI ge76 the last 2 years. that temps are good on my laptop
I own an Alienware M18 R1 i9 13980HX RTX4090 and the AWCC is really bad the Fan curves are reversed high is on the left side and you can't control them properly in custom mode the fans in 35% make a unbearable noise only stabilizes at 40% or 45% the sad part is you can't avoided the 35% because the fans run at that level for at least 15 sec and it's a seting form the hidden bios so it's 15sec of pain and suffering. every 5 min or so. and the CPU1 fan run the same time with GPU3 fan for no reason at 50C the problems with the software and the poor bios are the poor implementation and the lack of control is unforgiving and gives me a sour taste in my mouth. If your voice can be heard at Dell, please tell them To FiX the AWCC and the Fan curves form the bios give the people the freedom to control their Fans and same thing can be said about Undervolting why Blocking it why? this is really sad.
the screen is to dimmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!! whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!! whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! just kidding, trying to be like all the idiots.
Another issue is Alien Command Center, I am sorry but this is garbage ! 🗑️ horrible software! It got a bit better but still, for major task such as controlling your performance, this is not good, very slow, just crashing … not good! Please make it good! Not perfect, just good!

The refresh rate! Where do we go from here? Good to hear from Brian.

This is how all videos should be. Glad I just bought one.

Just got this laptop m18, 4090, 64tb , 4 tb Ssd… compare it to my other m18 with 4060… day and night ! Much wow!
You need to use the display port for the higher than 120mhz displays not the hdmi
this is what i am trying to find out. the display port gives higher HZ?

Love the vid. Out of interest, where did you get the shirt from? I want one for school to give my teachers a little heads up 🤣.
One of my favorite shirts :-) . I found it a store call Micro-Center.

Yep, both of my M18 are at 480;) much AMAZE and one has mechanical keyboard! That thing it AMAZING !
Newbie here, if you connect this laptop to an external monitor, will it cause the fans to spin loud?
Should have no effect. It all depends on the power mode you set the system to.
Thank you for the detailed review.. Is this the m18 r2?

Lots of Problems with keyboard lights
How 9tb Ssd? So you got your full size Ssd x2 ( 4tb each) and the 2 small ones, you can get those in 2 tb each… total is 12 tb Ssd max…
Yeah, how is he getting 9tb max.
Is this an intervention? It's critical? As in critical condition?
Thank you¡
300 max nits , come on alienware , need to step it up

Get a cooling pad. Should help a ton.
