I lived in South Africa for six years....I am Australian. I was also in South Africa in November 2017. As long as you use common sense in terms of personal security you will be fine. It’s an AMAZING country. It is Africa but highly developed. The first success heart transplant was done in a South Africa in Capetown. You could use any banks ATM’s to draw money from your account in South Africa years before that technology was available in Australia. South Africa is going through change that will take generations before she fully stabilises. I love that country! Now jump in a plane and go!

Typically whites South African who hate the country because the country is no longer under their control. The offsprings of the architectures of apartheid and colonialism are always bitter. Black people today are happy because they enjoy themselves without being terrorised by the security police and soldiers of the apartheid regime.

@Billy Mack You have a personal problem, stay that way. Let's enjoy South Africa with all those who visit us while you are whining. Cry babies. South Africa will be even much better under the EFF government or when the EFF gain more political power, which will be the case after 2019 elections. The expropriation of land without compensation will be a huge leap forward. Why should one go to a strange place alone. Be it a modern suburb or not. Be it America, Australia anywhere in the world. If any person, whether white or black where to relocate to Soweto today that person would definitely enjoy the lifestyle there once s/he get used to the people there. White South Africans have failed to coexist with their fellow black South Africans. Thry even fail to pretend.

I want to visit a loved one who lives in Boksburg Johannesburg, and I probably have no other choice than to visit alone... but most of the time I'll be with her, in her areas, and she walks around a bit quite safe. I'd only be getting transport alone. I've done tons of research. Is it safe to just travel alone? How should I carry around money and my phone? A small black bag or money bag around my waist? Because I need to carry my phone and some money, my cards and things. Is there any advice you could offer? Thanks :)

@@NataliesAngelASMR I'm from Boksburg. Pretty normal town. Obviously just stay cautious. From lack of experience, I can't say too much about public transport and taxis but rather stick to Uber. Try avoid walking, especially at night and keep your phone and wallet in your pocket. Don't answer your phone while walking and if someone asks for the time, tell them you don't have your phone on you. If you need to make a short distance to a shopping centre which obviously doesn't justify an Uber and the area is relatively safe, then walk. Again during the day.

  • @CasperLabuschagne
    @CasperLabuschagne 5 років тому +103

Yes, Johannesburg is safe, provided that you stick to the tourist areas and not verge outside of the protection of a tour guide or driver. But don't do what the ordinary citizens do by taking a train, bus or minibus to work plus walking a few kilometers from home to the station in the dark. Take a 6:30 train from Park Station to Dunswart in Boksburg and tell me about that experience. Or try walking the Small Street Mall between Commissioner and Moosa streets at midday on any week day.

There's no reason whatsoever not to go anywhere just because you might not be safe. As a tourist just never flash your flashy belongings that might have a high street value. Phones, cameras, wallets. If you go hiking or jogging do not go with those belongings. There will always be private security around no matter where in SA you travel - especially urban areas. Our private security, their efficiency and their professionalism, makes up for everything that the police lack.

I would definetly advise not to travel alone, rather do so with a group/trusted tour guide, especially if you are female or travelling near township areas. Never walk alone at night even in the suburbs or more upmarket areas of SA. I would not advise using a local taxi, although I'm sure that topic is debatable.
When you stop at robots (traffic lights) rather keep your windows closed and car doors locked. Do not go into Johannesburg CBD (town) rather just avoid this area entirely.
I think that in general you should just be alert and aware of your surroundings.
The people of Johannesburg are so warm and friendly, I would recommend checking out the Rosebank area, there are so many tucked away restaurants and interesting shops there. The vibe is something special.
But if you really want a treat, go to Cape Town! especially Kloof Street in town. Chapmans Peak, the Winelands, Paarl Stellenbosch etc. The list is endless.

I was in South Africa for 5 weeks in August 2019, me and 2 friends travelled from Ireland. Found it fine, we walked around the cities at night drunk and with no problems, but when we got separated we always got taxis. Just common sense really. Looks like quite the nice tour of the city itself! Other nice places for a tourist to visit in Gauteng, in general, can be Gold reef city, Sun city and there are so many heritage places and nature reserves. With regards to safety. It all depends on where you are. As someone who grew up there, you learn to be careful and you learn to lock your doors, have burglar bars over any windows, to have an alarm on even when you're at home, to not open your car window if someone points at your front tire like there is something wrong with it etc. Yes, crime happens everywhere, but from my own experience and in comparison to other places I've lived in and visited, the rate is higher in Gauteng. I know many people that have had few such experiences, but also know of many others that have had some seriously scary experiences that they were lucky to survive. In my old neighbourhood home break-ins were so common that it would occur on a weekly and sometimes even a daily basis and I do experience PTSD if I hear noises outside my current home, but we had little exposure to other types of situations. From what I have heard it has improved in the past few years so it can be completely different now.
For a tourist I would just recommend to stay alert, to not leave any of your things lying around anywhere (especially if its an expensive camera or equipment) and then the same advice the tour guide gave you.

I don't get why you need to be so negative. I get cautioning people about the dangers but you are exaggerating it. I mean I know crime is high in my country but the only time I've ever experienced it was when my phone was stolen from my apartment. And they literally could've taken a whole lot more that was worth more. I've walked the streets of Nelspruit, Pretoria (CBD, Sunnyside, Arcadia, Wonderboom, Hatfield, Menlyn, Brooklyn), Johannesburg (Soweto, Braam, Auckland Park, Sandton, Midrand) alone at night and the worst I've experienced was cat calling. I understand that I've been lucky. But it's really not as bad as you make it seem. Maybe your negative energy just attracts the crime.

Your videos are so awesome however, in actual fact some parts of Johannesburg cbd have become very unsafe even during the day in the past two years. We have homeless people robbing in live day light "during the people " and that makes me so nurr "extremely angry " as a south African who grew up in south Johannesburg.

Thanks :)

Like many countries in the world, South Africa has a lot of value to offer to visitors. Just do not get deluded into thinking that it is (a) safe and enjoyable everywhere at all times, (b) a good place to invest or relocate. The country is on an alarming trajectory of economic and social failure caused by many bad fundamentals that are not going away any time soon. Just my opinion as a South African in fear. Visit it while there are still some things to enjoy.

I loved your point of view of the city. My advice for those who are saying so many bad comments, in case you haven't been there like me, go there and see with your own eyes and have your own experience.
I had this feeling and picture about Rio de Janeiro, it is dangerous too, but people do not walk on the streets carrying automatic machines, shotguns and kevlar as many of you may think, but you gotta remind yourself that you're not in Norway either!

Am from Nairobi, Kenya. Would love to visit Jo'burg but I have heard alot of misconceptions perhaps. I hear security is such a challenge but just like any other city I believe if you aint local just stick to your lanes. Know where you are, who you are with and what you doing there. I believe even native africans would face the same challenges faced by other foreigners(whites) in places like Soweto and the like.

Please state your white ignorance first in the we before you make ignorant statements about CBD. We all know white guilty is eating you. You think Black People will do what you did to them and project that internalised fear.
I am proud black South African who is middle class and I used to live in the CBD. When traffic was still a huge problem I used to travel with the convenience of Gautrain fast train.
The City renewal happened long time ago. It has 5 major areas. Braamfontein, a student town with a vibrant night life and metro culture. Nelson Mandela theatre and Constitutional Hill are amongst highlights of the area.
Newtown, a vibrant cultural enclose. With the Market theatre, Fox 1 Flea Market, Africa museum etc.
Marshalltown with mainly large corporations office blocks but recently has strong middle class accomodation. It's got your Ghandi Square, and night life vibe. With couple of Rooftop clubs.
Maboneng, a very vibrant urban renewal area. A strong metropolitan culture. Within Maboneng you have extensions. Extending to Doornfontein.
In Doornfontein, it is also a student friendly area but has strong night life. It is famous with a Naked bar call FACTORY for gay men and DL people. Lots of sexual activity there. So I heard. It's got famous strip club adult hotel the ROYAL. and another one Maxime.
Now up there it's HILLBROW. Not for the faint hearted. Strip clubs, SUMMIT, clubs night life, East access to drugs, quite evil. However, there is humanity as well. Best African cuisines and is 90% lived by foreign nationals mostly from Africa.
