So who else caught themselves tappin' their toes, bobbin' their heads and with an ear to ear grin?
Oh yes . The Travelling Willburys were a truly wonderful group. RIP Tom petty,Roy orbison and George Harrison. You'll be missed forever.
Jeff Lynn is the only one who could sing Roy Orbison's parts. Anyone would else would have made it a caricature, Jeff made it an homage. The whole Wilburys project was such a case of lightning crashes. So many greats, not showing off, not one upping each other, but just coming together and showing themselves as a bunch of guys doing what they love.
OMG I had no idea about The Life of Brian! That's amazing! Thanks Fil!
You need to see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers play this at the Soundstage concert. They nailed it.
See for yourself.
You can certainly tell who George Harrison's son is. He looks just like his father. May He RIP.
Jeff did a very admirable job handle the Orbison vocal parts
I thought it was Roy since I was watching the video while doing something else. Amazing imitation, and imitation is the greatest form of flattery. I rewound it and I noticed the looks on the others as he was singing, that is what is called talent appreciating another's talent of a talented artist.
@@lawrencetaylor4101 Me too!! It's amazing in the truest meaning of the word!! :) . Petty sounds a lot like George in this too.
Takes only Jeff to imitate the Great One. LOL. I sure do miss Tom... And George.... And Roy.... Damn Im old.
@@KrisH-kp9vx You aren't the only one who misses them, or is old lol
Jeff was so good at emulating Roy. Love the ELO number “Hold On Tight”.
Still in awe for how they filmed the (already recorded) End of the Line, with the deceased Roy Orbison represented by his guitar in a rocking chair.
Bless the Wilburys! Tom Petty, George Harrison, and Roy Orbison...may they forever rest in peace! Jeff Lynne is a genius and who can forget Dylan...a true supergroup
Probably the most super of all supergroups IMHO
YES!
God Bless the Wilburys.
And unlike most supergroups, there was no drama here. No egos, no one thinking they were the best. There was nothing but love and respect all around. They wrote the songs together or took turns writing. The greatest thing about the Willburys, was the fact that they came together pretty much by accident.
The apex of George’s talent imho. Musical talent and, collaborative talent. Hopefully I get to heaven. I’ll know I made it because I’ll be hangin’ with GH.
being as big of a Jeff fan as Jeff is a Beatlemanic, i thought i'd seen everything he had participated in till i just saw this... THANK YOU Fil!
Jeff Lynne never fails to surprise with his great talent.
Nice to see a music reviewer get the Wilbury’s history correct, Fil. One of the reasons for the concert’s excellent audio (it’s fully available on CD and DVD) is Jeff Lynne’s production. He spent months with engineers perfecting it. Good job, Jeff.
Jeff Lynne has the most beautiful voice ever!
Wow Jeff Lynne sure got Roy Orbison's part down..nearly sounded exactly like him!!
my only criticism is I could only give one like. 🤣
Damn, I really miss George Harrison, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison.
Ditto
Ditto ditto.
Me too :(
Ditto cubed.
Absolutely!
I love Roy Orbison's rendition, but I get chills when Jeff Lynne sings it too. Both great singers, each in his own unique way. Traveling Wilburys had so many superstars it would have been impossible to pay them enough if they hadn't been doing it for friendship and for the love of music.
Thanks, Fil, for another great review with lots of background information. I can see you like to do your research almost as much as you like to listen to the music.
That song came on the radio, in 1988, as I was driving the highway, in the rain, at night -- after having been devastated in a brutal event -- towards a job interview the next day, in a town somewhere where I was supposed to pretend that I was on top of the world. Emotionally, my guts were hanging out over the steering wheel and I was a ghost driving emptily towards a future I wanted no part of. The song was like a balm -- soothing and healing -- it made me cry and laugh at the same time. That night, a handful of superstars touched a regular Joe in exactly the way needed. I'll always be grateful for that song, in that moment, and for their dedication to make what is really just magical music.
Thank you for sharing. I hope life got better. We have all faced moments when a song touched us and helped us cope with life. For me, John Prine got me through a heartbreak and sudden death. But you said it so well and i must agree with you.
@@michele21auntiem Thank you for the kind words. Things did get better -- as they always do. I hope that's true for you, too!
Still hard to believe Tom’s not with us anymore😔 love Mike Campbell great slide playing 🤘🏻
Hard to believe is right. I say that to myself all the time. Especially the last couple years. We've lost some great ones. Chris Cornell really got me to
James Gordon OOO man I forgot about Chris, that was a tough loss.... love Soundgarden. So sad
James Gordon Nothing on this end I can see🤔 my names Tony so it’s not me........,weird
Such a lovely story, 5 great men but with no egos
Perfectly lovely analysis and great encapsulation of the whole complex story. One sweet little fact: when Dhani was growing up at Friar Park, George was massively involved with landscaping the grounds. So, when Dhani was asked about his father as a musician, he said that he didn't really know he WAS a musician, he always thought he was a gardener. Thank you so much for this one!
May I add. George said he had to tell him when Dhani asked him about Yellow Submarine. He’d heard about it from the boys at his school.
HA yes. ..George was always refered to as the "gardner ". .by Jeff Lynn. I'm sure George is cultivating some great gardens in heaven. .r.I.p. .George.
Jeff Lynn is the only one that can fill Orbison's shoes here.
Simply magic!❤❤❤❤❤
Agreed he does a decent job but nobody could replicate Orbison's voice, it was unique. I'm in no way dissing Jeff Lynn as I think he's amazing but I think Jeff would also agree that Orbison had a voice like few others.
@@GaryBox I'd be certain he would.
@@alanna8983 I actually attended the concert and it was so emotional. First half Indian music then Western musicians. The programme was purple (George's favourite colour) and the standard of musicianship was incredible. So many guitarists and even two drummers on stage yet it seemed note perfect. Isn't it a Pity was probably my favourite track of the night. I bought the DVD too, must play that again soon through decent hifi speakers.
@@GaryBox ... Jeff has said as much many times!
Jeff Lynne's voice is so unique. Long live Jeff Lynne's ELO!
George,Tom and Roy. Sadly gone. Could you imagine just getting to hang out with these guys and listen to them speak, write, compose and...hang out. Priceless
Magic!!!
Hellowow 39 they were really the Supremes
Fil your enthusiasm for music is so evident and it’s so refreshing. I love music more than most in my everyday life, it’s nice seeing you with a smile on your face listening/watching great music.
I am a sixties seventies Rock and roll blues boogie fan,
but the traveling wilburys CD vol 1 sits atop of all my collection.
The part that I notice is that *these are guys who don't play together all the time, but it's great.*
The Wilburys made me a lot more of a _fan_ of *Jeff Lynne* than I was before.
And of course, Jeff produced all of the songs!
I fell in love with song about 3 seconds in to the first time I heard it. So Classic
Have you ever seen the clip of Jeff and Tom talking about George's reaction to having Dylan and Roy Orbison in his studio? They talked about how George was overawed--he said, "Look! That's Bob Dylan! That's Roy Orbison! They're here! In my place!" Tom and Jeff didn't say in so many words that they thought it was cute, but that's what they meant, and all they were thinking was, "Yeah, but YOU were a Beatle!" Being star-struck hits everybody, I guess. Another interesting story is that Olivia Harrison was standing in the wings during the Concert for George and, when she saw Dhani out there playing, she said, "Oh, my God! it looks like George stayed young and everybody else got old!" For those of us who were young when George was, too, it was eerie seeing Dhani with the same expressions and mannerisms of George up there, although he doesn't look quite so much like him now, having grown into his own personhood by now.
Tom, George , Roy , RIP, so sad
Thanks for posting this lovely video. Your analysis is spot on for me as well. Lynne carrying Orbison & Petty nailing George. I could just feel them there. So sad to have lost them & then Tom but what a legacy! Again, very interesting & informative work on your part. I love & miss my Willburys.
You are so right about Georges playing, never flash, but so smooth, and melodic ,Jeffs voice is so unique ,and so was Roys ,all these people are top level players ,and true artists ,and it shows in their songs ,this is a dream team loved George ,such a special soul, thanks for this just the best.
Jeff's voice is so beautiful and unique!
It's hard to replicate the smoothness and fluidity of George's slide guitar playing.
George's Cloud Nine, Tom's Full Moon Fever and Into the Great Wide Open, Orbison's Mystery Girl, and The Traveling Wilburys...All have that signature Jeff Lynne/ELO sound.....Jeff is criminally underrated....he is a one-man band/producer/arranger/musician...you name it.
Jeff also produced two very good albums early on; Riff Raff and Information for another extremely underrated artist, Dave Edmunds (of Rockpile w/Nick Lowe) Rockpile would make a good feature Fil.
Or, here's a BBC documentary about Rockpile with Albert Lee, Phil Lynott, Huey Lewis and Graham Parker. ua-cam.com/video/ZgaFZJppKAM/v-deo.html
Michael Moore I was never a big ELO fan so I didn’t realize until the Wilburys what a great singer he is. I think though that inside music, a whole lotta people know his talent. Dude is always working.
@@mikewhitfield2994 You got it. People 'in the know'....know.
@@michaelmoore7975 Definitely Rockpile, or Love Sculpture. Fil did an analyses of George doing a session with Carl Perkins, and Dave Edmunds was sitting next to Carl and I think it was Dave that organized all of the artists,
Lynne does a great job of filling in on the Big O vocal. Love the percussionist in the back, really the icing on the cake!
I remember George being quoted as saying, when he joined his first band, "How hard can writing a song be? I mean, if John and Paul can do it, anyone can." So, he wrote Don't Bother Me.
The Travelling Wilburys always give me goosebumps.. a true supergroup.
George will always be my favorite Beatle, as well as just one of my favorite musicians and an overall lovely human being. Talking about his residence, Crackerbox Palace, his video for the song Crackerbox Palace is actually filmed on the grounds. I’ve said before that you should cover some of the performances from The Concert for Bangladesh. So many great musicians participated in what was essentially the first benefit concert. At least on such a massive scale.
I'm watching this for a second time, just because it brings me such pleasure. It is probably one of the most magical stories ever about how artists came together to create great music. You tell it so well and I love how much you seem to delight in sharing it.
Jeff Lynne's voice is impeccable.
Traveling Wilburys 😎😎😎😎😎😎😎 Fil, you are the best. Love your enthusiasm and articulate well balanced monologue. 😍😍😍
A Concert for George! What a gem! The whole shit is heartbreaking and pure love. A shame we can't watch it anymore.
One memory that has always surprised me was Roy Orbison’s thankfulness at never losing his voice. It makes me happy to see how their band mates and friends cared so much to reproduce this song on stage to honor and remember their dear friends so very well. ❤️
Roy was only 52 when he died, y'know?
One of the greatest concerts of our time. So many amazing musicians on one stage remembering their friend; what a wonderful tribute! Thanks for the great analysis, Fil!
They play on a professional level and respectful to each person’s talents and love jamming together for the people who come to see them perform
George was such a colossal loss, the Concert for George was just so sad, brilliant and unique, it brought back the true spirit of The Beatles, Cream and the late 60's genius times, Eric Clapton was devastated.
This band was brilliant. Just brilliant.
Mike Campbell as always just perfect at what he does
A great musician, always played for the song, sad that Toms gone, they were a great pairing.
I've always had a secret crush on Mike Campbell!
sigh!!
@@davidsmith-jj4iq I watched the Netflix documentary and read Tom's biography. It seemed that even when they were doing other projects they always ended up working together
The Traveling Wilburys were such a happy accident. I love both of their albums. It was great to see Ray Cooper in there on percussion.
Big wilbury fan here. Also a big fan of this concert event. Somehow I ended up beijg a crazy Ray Cooper fan as well. I learned early on that if Jeff Lynn is involved in a project, I'm going to enjoy it. Saw ELO in kansas city in the late 70s and that did it for me. I also saw queen at the same venue around the same time. Epic productions that cost around 15 to 20 dollars for great seats right up front. Jeff really Channels Roy on this performance!
As most of us do, I miss George, Roy and Tom. They did beautifully, especially with Jeff singing Roy's part. I've always liked Jeff's voice. It's great that Dhani was playing in the band. You are an excellent teacher, Fil! You know your stuff! Rock on!🎼🎵
Fil... from here in America, your reviews are masterful and show such great respect for the legends that came before you.
Great song marvelous information on this Jeff offen referred to as the fith beatle does a terrific tribute to Roy Orbison.... Cheers
Timing was perfect. Yes Jeff Lynne did a good job on Roy's vocal part, and George's. Love the original band, I have their DVD and it wows everyone who watches it. George was truly a great player ever since the early Beatles days.
The day that George was stabbed, he had a new employee that showed up for his first day for work. Since it had happened very early in the morning, George was on a stretcher being put into the ambulance to go to the hospital. He gestured to the new employee and asked him how he liked working for him.
Another great George story was told by Ringo. The last time Ringo saw George, he was in Switzerland dying of cancer. Ringo said he had to leave to go to Boston since his daughter was being operated for a brain tumour. George asked Ringo if he wanted George to go along.
Ringo cried.
That was the kind of friendship they had.
Fil, The first I heard of this is primarily the same as you tell it. I want to mention how George was feeling good with having people to write with differing from his Beatles days. (No insults intended to former Beatles) But George relaxed and happy to have writing partners makes me feel good. Smiles for miles.
Not a comment directly related to the video, but when Tom Petty's Wildflowers was set to release, a local radio station in my area ran a contest to be the first caller anytime they played a Tom Petty song and you would win a Wildflowers CD before it went on sale. I never had any luck calling in fast enough until they played "Handle With Care." The DJ forgot that Tom Petty was in the Traveling Wilburys and nobody else called in either... I stopped by the station later that day and picked up my free CD, haha. Such a gifted group of songwriters and performers. Thanks for the amazing backstory, as always. Cheers!
Was so fortunate to see the magical Jeff Lynne and step aboard his mythical ELO star ship for a few hours before covid. It was like Catholics visiting the Vatican. Breathless, recognising his shoes as he walked on stage in the dark ! He paid such wonderful tributes to his fallen Wilbury brothers before and during the show, Most generous artist I have ever seen. One of the highlights of my life tbh
Thank you for featuring “Concert for George”, the Traveling Wilburys, and tangentially Roy Orbison plus “This is Love”; all on my list of favorites. This is a fascinating post! ❤️ Thank you.
Absolutely have always loved the Wilburys and you are definitely right Jeff is spot-on with Roy's vocals
YES ! I've been waiting for Petty (R.I.P)..... now got him the band and lots of bonus superstars ! ( Jeff even made it almost sound like Roy was there himself ( R.I.P ) Excellent performance..... thank you Fil ! Wow..... great ending to the night... God bless Rock-n-Roll 😎 You are so right about the money side Fil,those days are gone, very sad indeed ! ( Miss you Tom,Roy & George ) 🎸🎙🎸
I just love that song! Jeff Lynne is so underrated as a vocalist, but has an amazing voice, and is a great producer and songwriter. One of the most amazing songs is on Roy Orbison’s last album before he passed written, arranged and produced by Jeff Lynne & Roy called “A love so beautiful” I urge everyone to take a listen.
I can't thank you enough Fil, whenever I listen to The traveling wilburys or watch the videos which I have in my collection it is such a joy. The traveling wilburys collaboration with each other as friends as we all know was and is magical. Totally positive in every way. As always God bless.
And thanks for the great story about the making of the Life of Brian.
Never saw that one either. Don't have the words to say how much there is to miss and what a loss from that stage alone. What a great performance even the orchestra was tapping along.
The Traveling Wilburys was an act of PureMagic for the world. To have these guys with the Heartbreakers is another great act of musical magic. So many Tributes to those who have passed on makes me sad....
but glad to have have been a part of such a great era.
I like their sound and Jeff's Electric Light Orchestra music.
A great concert! Love Jeff's voice. RIP Tom Petty...❤️
Great!! Jeff was a great producer. Spot on, as you might say. Thanks Fil. I love all the information. What great research. It’s why I like tuning in, so to speak. Your the man, Fil.
You need someone of the stature of Jeff Lynne to even attempt the part of someone of the stature of Roy Orbison.
I’m a fairly new subscriber but I absolutely love your channel! Olivia Harrison’s first cousin Camille is a friend of mine. She’s been kind enough to share some great family pictures of George and Olivia with me. ♥️
Cool!
I love the lyrics of this song. Dry British humour, very tongue in cheek. "Oh the sweet smell of success". Great review as always Fil and a nice follow on from ELO. Thanks
The concert for George was just the best tribute... monty python to the beatles to ravi shankar. Everything and everyone george adored.
Whole lotta cool on that stage.
Another classic, Fil! Thnx! And I love the videos of the original Wilburys. You could see they just loved playing together.
Nice Fil. Nice follow up to yesterday's video...
This track leaves me speechless for so many reasons. Happily there are many of you who can put into words what goes through my head. Thanks for putting this up Fil.
Just beginning to catch up on your voluminous back catalog of videos when I came across this one. The Traveling Wilburys are my favorite super group ever. Goosebumps from start to finish!
I love their story. Such a casual start that turned into a monumental group. The best part is that there were no egos involved. Thank you for featuring them. I know the words to every one of the Wilbury songs.
Thanks so much for your comments, its such an inspiration, Cheers Mark (NZ).
The best supergroup I can think of - nice track, sentiment and what a way to say goodbye to George.
Rock!
Thank Fil. because of the excitement you have commenting on your review make it easy even for an old Country guy like me perhaps opening more on others type of music, after all I am an Elvis fan remembering my Parents thinking Elvis was the devil LOL ,, no not close to that kind of thinking since I love music, and music is universal in it own way, One thing is for sure this World need more music and and much less Judging,Thank again. Robair,
Wonderful history lesson. Those guys were not only great musicians but good people.
Thanks Fil!!...Indeed the Traveling Wilburys are a supergroup extraordinaire! It is so sad that there's only two left! I have this Concert for George it's fantastic!!!.... oh my goodness you walked past George Harrison's house everyday to go to college you lucky guy!!!....✌❤🤘
@Brad zybola. ..thanks for that info!..I didn't know that...Yes see you at live!...👍😁
Another great performance is Jeff, Joe Walsh and Dhani Harrison covering George's song "Something ". I think it was at The Concert for George.
Hey Fil, I brought this when it came out on cassette which I still have. You have said it best SUPER GROUP imagine being in that garage on that day.
Just saw ELO a couple weeks ago and Jeff Lynne brought Dani Harrison out to sing his dad’s singing part of Handle with care, plus Danhi’s band was the warm up band. Was a great moment, and Danhi loved the crowd’s ovation
Right on, Fil. Love your focus on the music and the love of music, highlighting the passion and intent. Business always will raise it's at-times ugly head but it's great to give a shout out to artists who could stick to the profit motive and choose instead to follow their heart and make the music they want.
Thanks for the Jeff Lynne coverage
What made this "super group" so "super" was their mutual generosity -- everyone wanted to share and get the best from everyone else --
They add to my golf rounds these days. Absolutely no one complains when I blast it out on the course
I wish they would have done more, I really love their sound. Jeff Lynne sounds like Roy Orbison and Dhani is the image of George!
Love the Tambouriner in the back. What style !😀😀😀
I just came across this video of yours Fil, again late, but great analysis as usual! Have to say, my 2 yr. old granddaughter learned how to tap her foot to this song and the Wilburys. Was hilarious, but she's now 4 and still wants to watch the Wilburys as soon as she gets my phone! She's loves them as do I! Greatly miss them and love your reviews! Well done again!
It amazes me how much you know about the backstories of all of your videos . Kudos .
Such a wonderful tribute to Harrison. Clapton, Lynne, Petty, Paul & Ringo, Dhani; what a great night of music. Thanks for sharing, particularly with the insight of the making of the song.
Thanks so much for this Fil. I know it's a few years old but I wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed it (have seen it a few times)! Anything with George and Jeff- I'm there, and love the Wilburys and their backstory!
Not much to say really but a great video from a fantastic tribute concert to George Harrison. Buy the whole thing and watch it. It is one of my favourite music videos and I never get tired of it. The Wilburys were this unexpected real super group . Each member a massive star in their own right. How brilliant would that have been if had gone on tour! Again a well thought out commentary with loads of interesting facts. Your knowledge of music and musicians plus your technical knowledge is superb. Full marks again!!👍
Fil, I see that you are reading my comments. It's so cool you are engaging with us as your viewers. You do a great job of showing so many fine music and musicians from so many eras and genres. I am binging on your videos right now! Great job, mate! Greetings from Mexico.
No problem!
Great analysis as always. Great hearing about Friar Park!
The greatest garage band ever? I was always amazed how well all their voices blended. They always looked like they were just having fun.
That whole Concert For George DVD set is great. I especially like when Clapton and McCartney did "Something", and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" wasn't bad either. I thought that an unsung hero of the concert was the rock solid Marc Mann, who played all of Clapton's original fills on "Gtr. G. Weeps" among other things. Then there was Petty's "Taxman", and Ravi Shankar's daughter on sitar. And then all of the interviews, and Monty Python. I don't remember if it was from an interview from this, or maybe the Scorsese movie Living In The Material World, but Michael Palin tells the story of when being carried out of his house on a stretcher after being stabbed, the paramedic carrying George said it was his first night working. George said "How do you like your job so far ?"
As we all know, Olivia actually succeeded in pulling the assailant off George - effectively saving his life. Apparently, on hearing this, Tom Petty sent a message to George: "Aren't you glad you married a Mexican girl?!"
@@promerops 👍
promerops George then went after the assailant, to defend Olivia.
He was hurt more badly than we were allowed to know.
I believe he asked the question of two new gardeners who had just started work on their first day - he beckoned them over to the gurney as he was being stretchered out. Either way, it's a lovely story.
Traveling Wilburys and The Highwaymen two great groups of pure talent
OMG! I loved the history Fil! I love this so much. The history gives so much heart to loving the song. You feel like an insider. Thank you for being so good at letting us see the artists as just people.
People who just loved to make music for all of us. You belong in this arena.
Awesome video Fil! I thoroughly enjoyed this, both as a long-time TW fan and as a Monty Python fan. I actually hadn't known that George so very kindly supported the cast and crew of Monty Python's Life of Brian - massive respect to him for that! Your videos are always entertaining, enjoyable AND educational. Thank you for doing what you do and for sharing your knowledge as well as your love of music! K
What fun! Can't believe you showed this! You are some kinda cool. Long live the Traveling Wilburys.
Perfection!
Love it when one can see Fil’s enjoyment in a performer/ performance. Loosing Petty felt like loosing a brother for me 💔. This band is superb, as are each individually. Truly appreciate the history @Pegasus.
