I think it is remarkable that BBC have done such a documentary - it is worth so much especially now that the past years have changed everything. Having been to school in Syria as a child myself, I can honestly say that this is the most 'real life' documentary I have ever seen, it is true and it shows various facets of school & society at the time. Outsiders often have a 'black & white' sort of opinion of countries they don't know, and this is a real eye-opener, because nothing is just black or white. As you can see, yes it is mixed, you can see extremes to either side, but you can also see open-minded people and a great thirst for knowledge. I have experienced this first hand in 2009-2010 when I co-ordinated a German-Syrian exchange project for university students, with students from both sides visiting the other country. There has never been a greater movement towards opening to Western countries, especially in education & research, than what was happening in that time. It was slow, yes, and it was within the restrictions of the political system, but nonetheless it was happening and it was positive & moving forward. It is unbelievable that all this has been destroyed and set the country backwards to a level that is now worse than 20 years before. Thank you BBC, from the depth of my heart!
I love Syria and Syrians. I am not Syrian myself, I am from Saudi Arabia but we have so many Syrians living here and they are a prosperous community and have done so much. Thank you Hannah it's motivating. Please try to convey the message that those who started radicalism and terror in our country are Qatar, Saudi and Turkey. will turn out to be not so much of a unity {syrians} ..... the one who killed 750 thousand syrians was also syrian and you know why ?because they were sunni "99%of the refugees are sunni"ua-cam.com/video/XBQXuzCpwtk/v-deo.html. so cut me some slack. i am all for accepting other culture and faith but the doesnt mean deny ur own in the process .
How messed up is that. Little did they know, that year everything was going to change for the worst. And that kid had to go through hell again. Most of these kids are probably dead now.

Excellent, Dua'a!!! Your attitude and learning of the negative aspects you were suffering at your old school has done a turn for the best. I wish you great success in your life and endeavors.
Mrs. Amal Hassan, the headmistress, is correct when she states that she wants women and girls to be free. This does not mean you are faithless. It means you are still muslim, but have the freedom to wear the hijab or not wear it. She is older and has experienced a vast amount of life and teachings, so she is very aware about freedom and women's rights. She is highly intelligent, well educated and very articulate. I would follow her example.
All the girls have freedom to wear it or not. That's why some and do and some don't in that school. She is not intelligent at all. She is trying to force this generation to become like hers, that's not progressive. She is brainwashing girls into her ideologies that she thinks is correct but are very incorrect.
@@hassankhokhar204 you're the reason countries like syria that where about to become fully working democracies with a stable society fall. You are backwards, incredibly misinformed and lack any sense of intelligence, but you refuse to think for a second that you might just be wrong. The mindset you have, is what keeps middle eastern countries in wars and poverty.
Tawfik bakro what about others??? You mention only terrorist and forget who made them and were did they came and how did they came?? who's the main responsible for that?? and that government was killing it's own people before 2 years and 7 months of establishing isis!!! That besides the government there were countries that help the government for doing that and there were countries who help isis, first one who helped isis and the main one is ass ad, that fake president who you guys talking about him like he's a god or something!!! He helped isis very will along with other countries for 5 years and now he's buying petrol from them and live a happy life by the protection of Russia and their allies, USA and their allies also help him and help isis and they use media to appear like they are enemies, because USA has a lot of advantages of this war so they keep it as long as they can... All thos politicals are the main responsible and the most one who start all these bullshit that what you worshipping him *ass ad* and yet you retarded worshipers of ass ad claims it terrorist group that have no heavy weapons nether planes to do such a things and with members that doesn't make more than 70 thousands of uneducated and weak to be the main artery of this problem??? For god sake are you talking from your heart or lying? For nothing or for your life?? Or you just a member of ass ad electronic and media armies?!?!?
Thank you SO MUCH for saving and posting this documentary. I can't wait to watch the other segments. It's amazing how radically Western media presentations of Syria changed after Operation Regime Change went operational the year after this was filmed.
If a woman truly wears a hijab for herself and her own religious beliefs, then I have no issue with it. But the problem is that many do not. As the sharia-schooled girl in the video showed, her arguments are that the hijab helps a woman avoid harassment. First of all, that's is factually false, as even in countries where women are fully covered, they still face harassment and usually on levels higher than in countries where women are free to wear what they want. But most importantly, the girl acknowledged that she wears the scarf for _others_ (i.e. men). She covers herself so that men have an easier time not harassing her. Well dear girl, that is a shitty shitty reason. If men can't stop harassing women without hijabs, then men should be treated. It is not the duty of women to cover themselves up to help men behave like normal human beings.
Afghan you're fucking lair. Many women who don't cover get raped because of their own actions. If we girks dress well then there's no way we would have raped . So the hijab is the best way to protect yourself and it was the orders of the one who create us who knows what's better for us and that's why he commanded us to wear the hijab . Dumb head .
I myself wear the hijaab and disagree with her. I personally wear it because God knows what is best for me and so I can show my Muslim identity through it, that was the purpose of it in the Qur'aan that Allah mentions right after ordering the believing women to draw their jilbaab. @Moon Light No way! Rape isn't anyone's fault except for the one who does it..am I supposed to wear a full burqa because this one guy finds hands attractive and rapes any girl he sees not fully covered? Sorry but please don't think this way.
Moon Light how come then that Syria has higher rape stats than secular atheist countries even with all their covering ? its the religion itself which is sickening and poisoning men from disrespecting women no matter if they cover or not...women are seen and written as below men or simply sex slaves in all your coran ...I could wear a short skirt in a secular country and feel safe but I would feel unsafe even to show my face in Syria , sick men would claim its my faulth for being beautiful and not covering my face
stop worship pagan democracy. why western man worship women high heel boots, ass and women strapon pegging their man and called them while pegging that who is whore? who is bitch now? and man reply : yes. is this really modern? happyness?. Isa/jesus (pease be upon him) was Muslim and prophet and mother marry was also Muslim & also wear hijab. why western women don't want to look like prophet mother marry? and listen to this lecture, don't believe western media about IS: yadi.sk/i/Y0LDQ_iS3TBCqV
Whenever I miss Damascus I go back to such pre-war-made documentaries, our youth were were such talented boys and girls full of life and laughter, now they are all depressed somewhere in the exile..
This is so sad to watch. Say what you’d like about Assad, but it’s undeniable that before 2012, Syria was at least safe and progressing towards a better standard of living. I hope that all these wonderful boys, girls, teachers, and families made it through the war, and that one day Syria might have happier days ahead (like these ones).
I feel sad for Sara, her father was so rude...how can he talk like this to her. I hope she will not pay much attention and accomplish her dreams in life. On Syria, I have visited it many times before the war and it was a really nice place...I hope it will return to its prewar state ...peace
I wish we can see of more like this in Syria and not just all the bombings. People deserves to live and all has a right to life. We're still praying that they can regain the way of living that they once have.
For me the most significant segment is at 43m47s Here the first Lady faces the challenge of the call to prayer but continues her talk encouraging women to play a part in the commercial life of the country. She stresses the importance of technology especially computers. Most chillingly she correctly forecasts "Tomorrow will be too late"
I don't know much of jack shit about how things really are in syria right now. All i know is that i tutored one refugee who didn't talk much about it at all, so i didn't ask. I hope everyone in this video is alright.
in tunisia too we study philosophy and islamic studies in the same time...generally philosophy teachers are atheist leftist....we have a balanced educationwe have baccalaureat system like france and the exams are much harder than that in france .i had math branch baccalareat ..we studied math physics chemistry bioilogy philosophy and sports
that head mistress must be the strongest woman on this planet ...allowing herself to wear short skirts, makeup and no head cover in a conservative arab country while being in a strong position as leader and high status is something to admire
Pop Naty .. what .. dude .. before the war .. no one cared about what others wear .. and if a girl doesn't wear a headscarf doesn't mean she is strong .. it's normal .. the girls who wear headscarfs choose to wear it .. but now ISIS force them to wear a headscarf !!!!
She could be from non-sunni background so it's normal that she doesn't put a headscarf on. Actually the oppression girls in syria face about hijab comes from their parents not the govt (the govt has other kinds of oppression 😁)
Inshallah it will be back. I'm sure everyone in the video want the old Syria back. Allah is watching, my brother/sister. Do a dua and stay safe! There will come a time when Syria will be stronger then ever! Don't give up the hope! Greetings, your Iraqi brother living in The Netherlands.
Sharki Sha why do you think this Damascus wasn't destroyed all these kids must be having find lives watching the news seeing the eastern part of the country being destroyed
Syria is a secular country and was very modern even under one party regime ,I'm very sad for what happened to Syria because of the Wahhabi golf states ,,,secular Syria will be back like before and stronger ,,,from Algeria ,we are very sad for what happened to our Syrian friends because of Wahhabi terrorists .
First of all I have never heard of "golf states". If you are referring to Gulf countries, I would like to correct you. All Gulf countries are officially Sunni Muslims. Second, the reason behind what is happening in Syria is a mixture between a rotten government, citizens who simply cannot fellow rules, and some racist groups and countries who interfere in the events only to help citizens who share their beliefs, or for simply gaining control over the rich resources of Syria. Arabs should really stop blaming Gulf countries. As an Arabian citizen (who is not from the gulf) I believe that most Arabian countries are merely jealous from the Gulf because of their wealth and achievements. One last thing, I am sure that Syria will probably rise. However, it will never achieve anything with its one party regimen. Syria has (or had) enough oil money to make it as modern as Dubai. Nevertheless, that "Glorious Regimen" kept all the money for them selves.
Chaoui Russikada Sorry for the miscommunication, I have never meant to disrespect you, I thought you were using "golf" is some kind of sarcasm. Having lots of money does not mean being able to host refugees. Some official in Kuwait (I can't remember who it was) have honestly announced that they are only willing to give residency to people who could work. Plus, the only gulf country that could take refugees is Saudi Arabia (in terms of space). I'm talking sectarian? you're the one that started claiming that all gulf countries are Wahhabi! Also, could you please tell me why would gulf countries supply terrorists? I've been living in a gulf country in the past few years; and there was at least 10 donation campaigns to provide supplies for Syrians. Why are you so full of hate?
bhu nji Congratulations, you have just demonstrated how ignorant people comment immature comments. The original comment at least contained some information, your comment is purely *hate* *speech* (I am not Saudi, I don't even like Saudi Arabia)
well said! it's a shame what is currently happening in Syria. All over the world, people are starting to realize that Saudi Arabia , the US (and their western allies) and Israel are behind this conflict that has already killed so many people. They manipulate everyone for their own selfish interest: sickening! When will it stop? When are they going to let Syrian people live in peace like they had already been doing for so many years? When are they going to let the rest of the world live in peace without trying to create chaos? This got to stop otherwise we're heading to a 3rd world war.
Much hurt to know the destruction of a Beautiful & wonderful people as a result of jealousy & Greed by the outsiders.... !! My Prayers always with this once a normal peaceful country . Hope one day those past days come back again !!
I really had to comment this it touched my soul personally…. I’m not doubting that you do not love his daughter. It’s just a generational circle and a way to lead your own children, but with irreversible mark in their personalities.
Who knew it that the country in which people are getting refuge considering a safe place for their survival in 2011 will become the most dangerous one for its own native people and 10 million people will immigrate from that country and thousands will lose their lives and there will be drought in many of the regions of that country...may Allah save people of Syria..love and respect from PAKISTAN🇵🇰🇵🇰
With tears in my eyes seeing my Arab brothers and sisters suffer I hope everyone who contributed to destroy this beautiful country will burn in hell fire eternally. Amen I remember when I was a kid all Arabic cartoons broadcasted in my country were translated in Damascus what a shame .. I hope all Arabs will wake up and be united again and stop being divided and fight each other

will turn out to be not so much of a unity {syrians} ..... the one who killed 750 thousand syrians was also syrian and you know why ?because they were sunni "99%of the refugees are sunni"ua-cam.com/video/XBQXuzCpwtk/v-deo.html. so cut me some slack. i am all for accepting other culture and faith but the doesnt mean deny ur own in the process .

I wonder what has been of him 😢🙏🏼
Thank you for uploading this! I will watch almost any documentary but this was quite interesting.
Glad you enjoyed it : )
I am just crying
i use to love to visit one day
i am from somalia
many of these girls were killed
i will will love syria forever
I was actually one of those Iraqis that went to Syria in 2007. I really miss old Syria
Now Yusif has(maybe had) to live with the explosions again.😭
Derick Gabrillo yup same happened with me he probably moved back to Iraq or Moved here to the USA like we did
Someone said that in the later episodes we find out that he moves to Canada
Piotr Rokosz see? Evry place supporting the govermemt is safe !!! All ppl now knows who destroyed syria 👈
Mr B you are a big fat liar
How messed up is that. Little did they know, that year everything was going to change for the worst. And that kid had to go through hell again. Most of these kids are probably dead now.
Beautiful people and country So sad to see how they used to live and how they became now😶

Barbie Girl .. ❤🇸🇾🇵🇸
When he said Ramadan is over for a next year it saddens me because Syria will be in war because of terrorists.
im so devastated.. why was i born as a syrian during its worst era. my parents always tell me how beautiful syria was, sadly i dont think there's hope anymore..
Worst part about these videos is the reminder of how quickly we were advancing. Secularism, peace, security and prosperity. We had it all...
Damascus....oldest capital in the World!!!

Christoffer Nilsson
Well not completely.....yet.
Look, I'm syrian myself, but I have the guts to say the truth.
Yes... you sound like a 'Syrian'.

LOL!
So there's something as to "sound like a Syrian"
I'm Syrian from Damascus (living in Germany, specifically in Bavaria since a year and a half now) and I condemn both Israel AND Hamas!
Oh and I'm an atheist, so that doesn't "sound syrian" to you at all, right?
Bullshit.
Beautiful country, beautiful people, destroyed by war.

Follow her example? Please. Become a muslim first, then talk about what muslim should and shouldn't be doing
@@reemsbaking Thank you
@@hassankhokhar204 you're the reason countries like syria that where about to become fully working democracies with a stable society fall. You are backwards, incredibly misinformed and lack any sense of intelligence, but you refuse to think for a second that you might just be wrong. I hope so but cannot take for granted sometime someone drops large bombs from the sky, and also not to forget carbombs and snipers.
I hope u understood how life I'm Syria used to be before terrorism
Awww, it looks like they're having so much fun and enjoying their life. Sad it all got ruined, it really breaks my heart.
Thank you SO MUCH for saving and posting this documentary. I can't wait to watch the other segments. It's amazing how radically Western media presentations of Syria changed after Operation Regime Change went operational the year after this was filmed.
Thanks a lot for the team & people who cooprate for this documentary.
Amen!
Moon Light how come then that Syria has higher rape stats than secular atheist countries even with all their covering ? its the religion itself which is sickening and poisoning men from disrespecting women no matter if they cover or not...women are seen and written as below men or simply sex slaves in all your coran ...I could wear a short skirt in a secular country and feel safe but I would feel unsafe even to show my face in Syria , sick men would claim its my faulth for being beautiful and not covering my face
stop worship pagan democracy. why western man worship women high heel boots, ass and women strapon pegging their man and called them while pegging that who is whore? who is bitch now? and man reply : yes. is this really modern? happyness?. Isa/jesus (pease be upon him) was Muslim and prophet and mother marry was also Muslim & also wear hijab. why western women don't want to look like prophet mother marry? and listen to this lecture, don't believe western media about IS:

This is so sad to watch. Say what you’d like about Assad, but it’s undeniable that before 2012, Syria was at least safe and progressing towards a better standard of living. I hope that all these wonderful boys, girls, teachers, and families made it through the war, and that one day Syria might have happier days ahead (like these ones).

Here the first Lady faces the challenge of the call to prayer but continues her talk encouraging women to play a part in the commercial life of the country. She stresses the importance of technology especially computers.
Most chillingly she correctly forecasts "Tomorrow will be too late"
why is call to prayer a challenge? she is married to a dictator and pretends to support the country. give me a break.

that head mistress must be the strongest woman on this planet ...allowing herself to wear short skirts, makeup and no head cover in a conservative arab country while being in a strong position as leader and high status is something to admire
Pop Naty .. what .. dude .. before the war .. no one cared about what others wear .. and if a girl doesn't wear a headscarf doesn't mean she is strong .. it's normal .. the girls who wear headscarfs choose to wear it .. but now ISIS force them to wear a headscarf !!!!
This is Syria not Saudi Arabia
You have probably only seen an 'arab country' in hollywood propaganda movies or MSM
She could be from non-sunni background so it's normal that she doesn't put a headscarf on.
Actually the oppression girls in syria face about hijab comes from their parents not the govt (the govt has other kinds of oppression 😁)
I despite her actions, she must respect the girls' choices about hijab, and after all thankfully most of Syrians are muslims.

This got to stop otherwise we're heading to a 3rd world war.
hahaha you surely know syria lol
syrian girls are very bold..damn this documentary was filmed in the same year(2011) when the uprising started. so sad .. i hope every one is safe..
