    I don't know why this video got randomly recommended to me 9 years later, but I can't help but feel immense pride in my country as a Syrian.. Education is highly valued there, which is clearly seen through the wide range of subjects taught.. Yes the girls have to wear a uniform, but it feels refreshing to see how on the first day they are free to show up however THEY like, hijab or not. And unlike many extremists who believe that philosophy denies the truth of God, both religion and philosophy are taught in our schools. Since then, French and Russian have also been taught as secondary languages, with Arabic always being the first and foremost as it defines our heritage and unites the many ethnicities in our country..We have a shot at reviving our beautiful land and making it more developed than over..I trust that with help from Allah and through working together, Syria will propser and flourish once again..

      You shouldn't bother yourself in learning anything about philosophy AND ASTRONOMY if you believe in god. They're not for you. Stay away from it and stick to your religion. I lol'd when I heared the hijab girl talking about astronomy. Don't taint these subjects with your religious crap.

      Im Lebanese from the South and as usual our leaders and governments embarrassed us as a people. Allah yahmeekon, All the Maronite, Muslims and Druze of Syria to Lebanon and Palestine and Jordan. Syrians have been best friends to my parents, Syrians have been my friends when i was growing up in the Middle East. Syrians were clean handsome and beautiful and friendly and never did anything that someone can say something negative, but i cant say the same for a Palestinian or Lebanese and im actually realizing this as im writing it. Syria is important to all the Arabs who wish for Pan-Arab Nationalism or who understand the organs of the middle east, like Syria being the heart, Lebanon like the lungs, Palestine like the brain...Jordan like the liver and kidney....and when i say this i dont mean the governments i mean the people, the actual people, like me and you.

      Actually Damascus is quite safe, especially the regions within the Arab Syrian Army full control. But there are of course some kind of instability in the area as a whole. Economical problems ( high to extremely high prices). The lack of water and electricity during long periods of the day (depending on the district)... etc and such issues are common.

      There are many things you don't know since you don't speak Arabic but look Syria now is free look what Assad done with innocent people even children the people there were tortured for money and put live on deep web sometimes for money in prisons but now muslim Arabs took the syrian governement hopefully they will bring peace and wisdom again.

    I think it is remarkable that BBC have done such a documentary - it is worth so much especially now that the past years have changed everything. Having been to school in Syria as a child myself, I can honestly say that this is the most 'real life' documentary I have ever seen, it is true and it shows various facets of school & society at the time. Outsiders often have a 'black & white' sort of opinion of countries they don't know, and this is a real eye-opener, because nothing is just black or white. As you can see, yes it is mixed, you can see extremes to either side, but you can also see open-minded people and a great thirst for knowledge.
    I have experienced this first hand in 2009-2010 when I co-ordinated a German-Syrian exchange project for university students, with students from both sides visiting the other country. There has never been a greater movement towards opening to Western countries, especially in education & research, than what was happening in that time. It was slow, yes, and it was within the restrictions of the political system, but nonetheless it was happening and it was positive & moving forward. It is unbelievable that all this has been destroyed and set the country backwards to a level that is now worse than 20 years before.
    Thank you BBC, from the depth of my heart!

These three countries are supported by USA, UK and Israel. A Small online search will confirm what I say. It's devastating that a country such as Saudi with the worst human rights record wants to start democracy in my country. I appreciate every word you may convey.

      Yeah, after a decade of leading a modernizing movement, promoting Syrian cultural resources to the world and providing education and health care to everyone for free (including the 3 million refugees Syria had taken in), suddenly Bashar al Assad "became a dictator" just as jihadist nut jobs started murdering police and postal workers, burning libraries and government buildings and demanding the imposition of Sharia law with the slogan "Death to the Alawis, Send the Christians to Lebanon." Interesting coincidence.
      You wrote the above a year ago. Hopefully you've since then educated yourself better on the propaganda we in the West have been fed since the year after this documentary was filmed. Of course, the Syrian government had opposition All governments have opposition. But Syria was a beacon of modernity and inclusiveness in the region before Operation "Regime Change" went operational in March, 2011.

That besides the government there were countries that help the government for doing that and there were countries who help isis, first one who helped isis and the main one is ass ad, that fake president who you guys talking about him like he's a god or something!!! He helped isis very will along with other countries for 5 years and now he's buying petrol from them and live a happy life by the protection of Russia and their allies, USA and their allies also help him and help isis and they use media to appear like they are enemies, because USA has a lot of advantages of this war so they keep it as long as they can...
      All thos politicals are the main responsible and the most one who start all these bullshit that what you worshipping him *ass ad* and yet you retarded worshipers of ass ad claims it terrorist group that have no heavy weapons nether planes to do such a things and with members that doesn't make more than 70 thousands of uneducated and weak to be the main artery of this problem??? For god sake are you talking from your heart or lying? For nothing or for your life?? Or you just a member of ass ad electronic and media armies?!?!?

    I am from this beautiful,old city. It doesn’t sadden me to watch this. On the contrary, it makes me proud and happy because I believe in us Syrians. It is the oldest city in the world and has been through more and more wars and disasters throughout history but it is still alive. And will get back to life in the end and build new memories and history. I might not see that in my life but I know that one day this will happen. That alone makes me relieved ❤️

      Where are you from? We Arabs, at least in the Levant, believe that we are the people who have the most respect for each other's religions and beliefs. Whether you are a conservative Muslim or a Christian (we even have some Palestinian Jews in Palestine), we all respect each other's religions and beliefs.
      If there is a case of disrespect, then this is one individual and does not represent the entire society. If you want to look at countries and peoples that do not respect religions and beliefs, look to the West and take a good look at the laws of their governments.

    Mrs. Amal Hassan, the headmistress, is correct when she states that she wants women and girls to be free. This does not mean you are faithless. It means you are still muslim, but have the freedom to wear the hijab or not wear it. She is older and has experienced a vast amount of life and teachings, so she is very aware about freedom and women's rights. She is highly intelligent, well educated and very articulate. I see in this video a sense of closed-mindedness and rigidity from the principal herself. Human freedom does not stop at the Muslim girl and the way she chooses to present herself. The veiled girl is open-minded and accepting of others. How long must we continue to adopt the West's views on openness? The West understands nothing about religions and has no values to defend. I have witnessed their moral decay despite their progress during my time among them. It does not bother us to see someone different from us who has principles, faith, and beliefs.

At 32:00 😥😥😥 I felt her so hard , the trauma she’s gaining publicly, the way he speaks to her I’ve suffered this my whole life you feel your not good enough despite of what you are good at .. I’m not doubting that you do not love his daughter. It’s just a generational circle and a way to lead your own children, but with irreversible mark in their personalities.

    If a woman truly wears a hijab for herself and her own religious beliefs, then I have no issue with it. But the problem is that many do not. As the sharia-schooled girl in the video showed, her arguments are that the hijab helps a woman avoid harassment. First of all, that's is factually false, as even in countries where women are fully covered, they still face harassment and usually on levels higher than in countries where women are free to wear what they want. But most importantly, the girl acknowledged that she wears the scarf for _others_ (i.e. men). She covers herself so that men have an easier time not harassing her. Well dear girl, that is a shitty shitty reason. If men can't stop harassing women without hijabs, then men should be treated. It is not the duty of women to cover themselves up to help men behave like normal human beings.

      Afghan you're fucking lair. Many women who don't cover get raped because of their own actions. If we girks dress well then there's no way we would have raped . So the hijab is the best way to protect yourself and it was the orders of the one who create us who knows what's better for us and that's why he commanded us to wear the hijab . Dumb head .

    • @SomEbodyisDERP
      @SomEbodyisDERP 7 років тому +15

      I myself wear the hijaab and disagree with her. I personally wear it because God knows what is best for me and so I can show my Muslim identity through it, that was the purpose of it in the Qur'aan that Allah mentions right after ordering the believing women to draw their jilbaab.
      @Moon Light No way! Rape isn't anyone's fault except for the one who does it..am I supposed to wear a full burqa because this one guy finds hands attractive and rapes any girl he sees not fully covered? Sorry but please don't think this way.

    • @popnaty8685
      @popnaty8685 6 років тому +5

      Moon Light how come then that Syria has higher rape stats than secular atheist countries even with all their covering ? its the religion itself which is sickening and poisoning men from disrespecting women no matter if they cover or not...women are seen and written as below men or simply sex slaves in all your coran ...I could wear a short skirt in a secular country and feel safe but I would feel unsafe even to show my face in Syria , sick men would claim its my faulth for being beautiful and not covering my face

    Syria is a secular country and was very modern even under one party regime ,I'm very sad for what happened to Syria because of the Wahhabi golf states ,,,secular Syria will be back like before and stronger ,,,from Algeria ,we are very sad for what happened to our Syrian friends because of Wahhabi terrorists .

    • @alaayoussef8216
      @alaayoussef8216 8 років тому +20

      First of all I have never heard of "golf states". If you are referring to Gulf countries, I would like to correct you. All Gulf countries are officially Sunni Muslims. Second, the reason behind what is happening in Syria is a mixture between a rotten government, citizens who simply cannot fellow rules, and some racist groups and countries who interfere in the events only to help citizens who share their beliefs, or for simply gaining control over the rich resources of Syria.
      Arabs should really stop blaming Gulf countries. As an Arabian citizen (who is not from the gulf) I believe that most Arabian countries are merely jealous from the Gulf because of their wealth and achievements.
      One last thing, I am sure that Syria will probably rise. However, it will never achieve anything with its one party regimen. Syria has (or had) enough oil money to make it as modern as Dubai. Nevertheless, that "Glorious Regimen" kept all the money for them selves.

    • @alaayoussef8216
      @alaayoussef8216 8 років тому +5

      Chaoui Russikada Sorry for the miscommunication, I have never meant to disrespect you, I thought you were using "golf" is some kind of sarcasm.
      Having lots of money does not mean being able to host refugees. Some official in Kuwait (I can't remember who it was) have honestly announced that they are only willing to give residency to people who could work. Plus, the only gulf country that could take refugees is Saudi Arabia (in terms of space).
      I'm talking sectarian? you're the one that started claiming that all gulf countries are Wahhabi! Also, could you please tell me why would gulf countries supply terrorists? I've been living in a gulf country in the past few years; and there was at least 10 donation campaigns to provide supplies for Syrians. Why are you so full of hate?

      well said! it's a shame what is currently happening in Syria. All over the world, people are starting to realize that Saudi Arabia , the US (and their western allies) and Israel are behind this conflict that has already killed so many people. They manipulate everyone for their own selfish interest: sickening! When will it stop? When are they going to let Syrian people live in peace like they had already been doing for so many years? When are they going to let the rest of the world live in peace without trying to create chaos? This got to stop otherwise we're heading to a 3rd world war.
