When I was living in western Oregon (where the state flower should be moss), I learned a trick from a maintenance company that specialized in removal of moss/algae from roofs. I was staying in an extended stay hotel while waiting to close on a house. One morning I heard a racket like someone dragging a dead cow across the roof. I popped my head out the door and there were two guys running a drop spreader across the roof dropping a white powder in a strip at the peak and another midway down the slope. I asked them what it was and to my surprise they said BAKING SODA. It's non-toxic and it kills moss/algae and keeps it from coming back (rain spread it down the rest of the slope). After closing, I decided to try that trick on a mat of moss on the patio on the north side of the house that was fully shaded. This mat was at least 2" thick and trying to scrape it off with a shovel was impossible. I went to a store that had a bulk food section and ordered a 20lb bag (cheaper than buying it by the box on the baking aisle.) I spread a liberal amount of baking soda on the patio in the fall and still struggled to get it up a week or two later. I got involved in other projects and that patio sat through the rainy winter. Come spring, I needed to get something that was in the shed on the opposite side of the patio and nearly fell on my bohunkus when I stepped on the mat and it came loose. The underside of it was a black sludge. I grabbed a square shovel out of the shed and quickly scrapped the whole mat off the concrete and hosed it off. Other than a little staining from the dirt, it was like it was never there. I also treated a strip of red lava rock with it and it killed the moss. I had to rake the rock after it died to knock the dead moss off but the rock looked like new afterward. It worked better than the bleach my neighbor told me to use. All that did was make the moss orange but didn't kill it. YMMV
Your videos weren’t popping up for awhile and I was missing you. Congratulations to you and your family on the new house. Looking forward to new videos as you work on your house.
Thanks so much for demonstrating this process. I have a shed with a lot of moss on the roof. There has't been rain for a long time here, so maybe the moss will come off easily. I did buy the type of moss treatment that connects to the hose to spray the roof moss & the moss on the cement pavers near the shed. My shed is a little smaller than yours & I know it's still going to be quite a job to do. But now I know what tools to use. And I have an excellent ladder. Hopefully I can get most of it. I'm afraid to get on the roof, so I may need to also call a professional for further assistance for this & the roof of my house. I will make sure that no pressure washers or metal tools are used. 😄 Thanks again.
I have to do that clean up on my garage roof. I also have one large tree limb that got knocked down quite a bit by another tree and is probably 8" above my garage roof. All the trees are my neighbors. Several are rotten and my garage is in the way. In Florida if a neighbors tree falls on your property it is up to you to take care of it and remove it. Thanks neighbor.......I am 78 y/o and will be doing it myself. Can't afford the expense of what tree removal is. I am seriously thinking of moving!!!!!
I had the same problem with my house roof that faces the north and the first time I threat it with chemical. Well 3 years later the moss and black fungus came back but I noticed that where the metal chimney support cables were attach to the roof the area below it was clean. Turns out the metal hooks are zinc plated! So I got a roofing guy to install a strip of zinc on the very top of the roof and that did it. 2 years and the roof is looking clean. The zinc strip was around $30 on Amazon
They make a product that's called Wet & Forget that will keep that stuff at bay as well and will last you many applications. Also works well on your gutters to keep the grime from forming on them.
I saw a video on This Old House, and they installed some kind of copper strip along the ridge of the roof and apparently after researching, zinc roof strips are good too.
@@TheFixerHomeRepair Sounds like another potential video to try in 6 months or a year from now when projects slow down if the current method is too annoying to do.
@@TheFixerHomeRepair Copper strips have been used for centuries to make cedar roofs last longer. The lead flash on our chimney seams to prevent moss, also.
Outdoor cleaner is just overpriced sodium hypochlorite. You can mix your own cheaper. Pool shock is (12% sodium hypochlorite) at pool stores or pool essentials at Walmart is (10% sodium hypochlorite) cut it with water down to a Mix of 6% for roofs and about a 1% to 2% for siding, doors and windows. Leave it on roof don’t rinse. Rinse off on siding, windows and doors after a 5 to 15 minute dwell time.

D'après toutes les vidéos que jai vues concernant la mousse et résidus de branches sur les toits il faut surtout élaguer tous les arbres trop proches .
I have the red tiles on my roof that have over the years (24 years) turned brown(ish). What's the easiest way to clean them without necessarily going on the roof with a bucket of water and a brush? I don't have a pressure washer either.
I've been using "Cass Turnbull's Guide to Pruning, 3rd Edition" for years now it is pretty good about tree and shrub pruning. if anyone has any other recommendations...thx!

That roof was loaded. Guess putting a shed under that many trees is something to consider. Good to hear it explained so well.
When I was a roofer, I'd put pieces of used copper wiring in the ridge vents an the water dripping down worked well

Also, install Zink metal under the ridge cap leaving 3" exposed to the weather. A roll of zink metal is available at any roof supply house.

Dude, you must have been reading my mind. I have a bit on my roof and need to get rid of it, so thanks for this video!
Me too 😂
Got some growing on the north edge of my house roof too.
That shed would be a lovely play house for the kids. The windows and the window boxes are just sweet.

🤣
What state do you live?
💖
Why not grow grass seed on the roof ?? Or grow tomatoes?? Come on Matt!!!
😂😂
Actually the roof is way to flat for shingles. Should be a membrane roof. For shingles, a 3/12 pitch roof is needed.
❤❤❤❤❤
😎😎
Wear mask or respirator when doing this please.
Is that stuff some kind of poison? Than is bad for the environment, so a old fashion way of cleaning.

Never! 🤣
