At 9:55 - you need 25 strength for the "Belt" not the "Heavy Belt" (which is correctly listed/pictured here as requiring an unnecessary 45 strength). The "Belt" is the first belt slot item in the game that gives you three potion rows which is a huge QoL increase over the earlier Sash/Light Belt and is very important. Just a small error in the video!
@rhykker I believe they patched corpse poping back in LOD. but yea....don't put anything on your char if you died....also when poping was a thing the trick was to throw a bunch of items (1 for each GG slot, 2 weapons, armor, rings ammy, helm) mostly and if they click on thouse then die for the 16th time they pop. And drop everything off their real corpse for every item that was accidentally equiped before their 16th corpse. It was actually kinda a tricky scam LoL.

Just bought D2R... I put thousands of hours into D1 and original D2 but haven't played in over 20 years... This was by far the best video to catch me back up. It's amazing how much I remembered about the game but this got into details I have forgotten about. Thank you.
Man, this was exactly the type of video/info I was hoping to find before playing. I’ve forgotten so much since I last played, this was a perfect refresher. Thank you!!
I haven’t played for years before they announced it in feb since then I have been watching everything I can and found a lot of good d2 creators and I’ve been playing Diablo 2 classic lol good luck today
My uncle played this game I was gonna ask him about it but after this video I'm feeling quite confident in these tips and did some live and learn plans for my first death on my first day and really intimately got to know what act 1 map has to offer. After a 5 hour session trying to locate my first body after dying through someone's portal just fresh from Diablo 3 I was solely determined to fetch my dead body after I've located it 😂 this taught me your progression is separated from D3 perspective where town ports and way shrines are completely based on what your personal progression is based on and not the hosts progression. This also taught me how to teach my cousin how to progress to act 2 and keep up with my self determination on D2R. This is both a learning experience and a great story to be able to share considering most games share progression all across the board and play a linear storyline when this game purely has that personal impact on free will in the game that teaches you how to retain knowledge and overcoming the unseemingly block in the storyline of a newbies perspective over a veteran player that can whizz through the map just raining blood left, right and center finishing the first act for you within the first session of your game causing you to not understand how you made it to act 2 without being able to explain to your cousin how you did it and just sitting there with a drink in my hand back tracking quests experiencing the level of awe and admiration for how well they won't hold your hand. I prefer to self theorize my own game play but once I saw that horadric cube and rune stones I knew I was gonna have to pull out the good ol' UA-cam and find some amazing early game tips to making early sets and rune words to progress the game alot faster and overcome some of the slow aspects of not knowing what you're doing and becoming stumped on how to overcome the challenges of actually traveling to every corner of every cave and overland map to progress to the next objective 😀 overall though I'm gonna recommend this game to another cousin of mine so he can enjoy this process as much as I do and figure out how to build his character and plan his builds or to just simply get that DnD feel that he loves because of the unpredictability of the games non-linear map layout and random chance aspect that the DnD game holds.
There's not a video game that I've played (or probably will ever play) as much as Diablo 2, but there's no way I would miss Rhykker's beginner guide. Excellent work, as always.

Very nicely done. As a returning diablo 2 veteran excited for the remaster of this complexity we know and love, this is by far the best guide as far as the basics for diablo 2, you cover all the key points. This was a wonderful refresher course as I haven't played this game in over 10 years, and I actually learned 1 thing as well
Can I just say it’s so bizarre to watch a youtube guide on a game I addictively played almost 2 decades ago. I never had any help before other than watching and imitating how my young uncles played.
I think that watching videos like this takes the fun and engagement out of the game. Half of the game for me was trying to figure out how to get a build right and learning from mistakes on how mechanics work. I guess now it's just a bunch of brain dead clickers who forgot how to use their own brain.
@@nickdaniels2083 this. Exactly what i always say. The sad thing is, we live in a braindead era where braindead people have braindead children who will create our braindead future.
Dexterity also increases damage for bow attacks and I think even thrown weapons, if I remember right. But it's still a great guide Rhykker, this will help a lot of people get into things easily.
Big tip: When you kill Andarial in act 1 DON'T talk to any NPC except Warriv, this is known as the Andy questbug. Just go to Act 2 right away and never complete the quest. Once you get into nightmare/hell farming on Andy she has a greater chance of dropping rings, especially the unique rings like Jordans and Ravens.
old time d2 player here, still watched through the whole thing, you covered pretty much everythig new players need to know, in as easy as possible way to understand
Insanely important note about death and corpses: If you don't have room in your inventory and item slots on your character, when you pick up your corpse, ALL the items on the corpse will drop on the ground for anyone to take! This was a popular trick from scammers, who would try to steal peoples items this way. The scammer would tell you that you get an extra copy of your items, if you run out of town, they kill you, then you fill your inventory and slots, and pick up your corpse again. But they will still be in hostile, and once you pick up your corpse, all your items drop to the ground. Then the scammer kills you gain, steals your items and leaves. Be careful out there. Don't get scammed. If somethings too good to be true, then it probably is.
I haven't played D2 in a long time, but I seem to remember that after joining a new game, all the monsters that you have killed on the way to where you died will respawn, is that right?
@@iceburger If you die and join a new game without getting your corpse from the current game, your corpse will just respawn underneath you in town so there is no need to find it. But yes, after creating a new game all monsters will respawn.
This is misleading and was fixed long ago in D2 and most definitely corrected in D2R. If you don't have room in your inventory or item slots on your character when you pick up a body a corpse will remain on the ground with your missing items. If you leave the game without a corpse or with half your items (say someone is camping your body) the dead body will follow you into the next game and be placed in town in the act where you died. Either way you are still able to pickup your items as long as you have room. I'll second the statement though, if it sounds too good to be true it likely IS.
I've only ever played diablo 3 and tonight I'm watching this before I try 2 for the first time. I wasn't expecting how complex and difficult this game is, seems to me like the older diablo games are diablo but with much more rpg going on, I'm excited for this.
Excellent guide. Truly. It's especially appreciated how the guide works around the lingo (CRT, Anni, etc) that still makes me pause each time I hear it. 11/10.
I love they remastered this game. I was 8 years old when it released and has been a staple of my childhood. Great video Rykker! May RNGesus bless you all!
I've been playing for 1 day so far and already found a +3 summon skeletons rare preserved head for my lv10 necro. So yea, RNG is being kind so far. Still need a good wand before I kill Andy
This guide is really useful, I have been playing D2R for a few days now and was never really a D2 veteran back in the day. I didn't know about the in-depth death mechanics there, so thank you, Rhykker!
The last time i was playing D2 is about 10 years ago, so it’s great to get such a complete update of the game mechanics. Thanks a lot for the great guide you have been putting together. It really helps ❤️
Rhykker has been THE man to go to for me, since I went down my ARPG looter rabbit hole 5 years ago. Here I am smoking a cigar with my morning Joe, watching him to prep for D2R. The community is all the better having this guy around, and he is very chill to boot. Many thanks Rhykker, you were and still are a big part of my ARPG life!
He is a fully fledged LEGEND in my eyes, earnt in full and then some. One day we will talk about him with the same adoration and respect as we do about Gandhi, Buddha and the "Fuck her right in the pussy guy". Oh wait many already do.
Whoa whoa whoa, 16+ yrs of playing i never knew on the 16th death your corpse will pop and drop your gears. I always reset after 3 or 4 death most 🤯 I remember showing a player that you can put a portal scroll in the potion slot and it blew their mind even after playing 9 yrs which I thought it was common shared knowledge at the time. This gem of a game just keeps on giving.
I just wanted to say, having not played Diablo II since I was a mere child in elementary school, I really appreciate this guide. I've been watching a few since I can't get my hands on the game just yet, but yours is by far the best. I never dived into real mechanics of the game (although I will say my Necromancer Summoner with a Maul is still one of my favorite memories) and my first playthrough will for sure just be a fun run, but this is definitely gonna be my bread and butter later on. Great job, subscribed.
Honestly, a general rule of thumb when it comes to stats is put enough into strength to wear your gear, then the rest into vitality. That's pretty much the same for all classes because you want vitality as much as you can to survive hell mode later on or you gonna die instantly, because everything hits like a truck in hell mode. As for your skill points, it's generally better to dump your skills into one skill tree instead of all 3 skill trees. Think of this concept as mastering one skill tree instead of jack of all trade, because you'll just do low damage if you don't become master in one thing. So you want to pick one skill tree and dump all your skill points into that. For example, sorceress is broken into ice, lighting, fire. You want to choose one elemental skill tree and master that for maximum damage such as ice only. Then ice can be broken into blizzard sorceress or frozen orb sorceress. Skill points vary depending on what you want to build for ice. Blizzard does more damage than frozen orb in the long term, but the mana consumption is significantly way higher. Frozen orb cost less mana but it does less damage in exchange for more crowd control (freeze non-ice resistant enemies). Then you'll want to dump just one point into warmth (or extra leftover points into warmth for mana regen) and one point into teleport simply for utility. Obviously, I'm just using sorceress as an example. Different classes all have their own builds. Barbarian is a bit different than sorceress because you want to dump points into buff bo (shout & battle orders & battle command) and whirlwind build, so it's more 2-3 skill trees. The game is very in-depth because it goes into runes socketing later on and can turn that item with massive stats buff such as Call to Arms or Enigma. The specific rune of order matters when it comes to socketing too. You'll have to do more research on your own for those, but those aren't that important until later on. From my personal experience from playing D2 back then, I usually just grab Sigon's Complete Steel Set and use that until I get better gear in nightmare to hell mode such as Shako (hat +2 all skills), The Oculus (wand +3 sorceress skills), Magefist (gloves +1 fire skill, 20% faster cast rate), Raven Frost (Can't be fronze)/Stone of Jordan (+1 all skill), etc. Shako (Harlequin Crest) is a very good hat that any class can wear, and I do know paladin, necro & sorceress generally all run this hat endgame too, especially hammer paladin & bonespear necro. Other classes varies depending on what you're building. But you can never go wrong with items such as Shako, SoJ/Raven Frost because these are applicable on all classes. I highly recommend for any players out there to play this game with 8 people or maximum players in a lobby because more people won't increase the difficulty of the game since everything is static. In hell mode, you're going to need as many players as you can to help you survive since even a normal monster can kill you very fast, which is why you want to prioritize vitality in your stats as much as you can. I used to play this game without really knowing what the hell I was doing as a kid, and I would die 1 hit from monster in hell mode, so it really sucked because I didn't know why I was dying even with full gear. Then I messed up skill points and had to remake a new character since you couldn't reset stats or skill points back then. I probably did that 100 times for every class before I figured out what was the proper build, since we were the first wave of people doing test builds with trials and errors before coming to conclusion what was the best build for each class.
@@yuzukikittz3398 Just keep farming it and playing the game. You'll find all the pieces eventually. Remember you can trade in this game too. You'll get to a point where some people just give them to you for free because they don't need it. It's dropped kind of often when you do kill Baal in nightmare+ so sometime people just give it to you since it's not a good gear for higher difficulty.
24:25 I loved how Rykker went "heh, well you're gonna have a fun time finding out" when mentioning duriel. Anyone who found that amusing has played original D2 back in the day.
Yup this is a treat to find out. Still it's a pain in the ass you can't enter a gold amount so I take out a full sack worth of gold when I need potions and put it back in stash after
Great video! A very important topic I'd like to add is breakpoints! You attack and Castspeed and your hit recovery depend on the animation. This will change at specific intervals, so as an example: a common breakpoint for the cold fire sorc is 63 faster cast rate, and after that it is useless to stack more fcr UNLESS you reach 105 fcr, because that is the next breakpoint for the next animation (it was tied to frames - yeah old game!) You mentioned this, but moved right on and it is one of the most important things to know to optimize your character for hell and on.
@@Furious321 I think referencing break points is perfect for beginners. Every new Caster out there is going to immediately equip the 1st 2 fast cast rings they find without realizing that the 2nd one is doing absolutely nothing for them.
Holy crap, having never played Diablo 2 and starting with Diablo 3 there seems to be so much more restrictions and at the same time much more freeing builds it seems compared to Diablo 3.
D3 was all about the sets, but with D2 it really depends what you want to do, might get some really awesome yellow gear , and the gold or green items might not be as good.
Bro, I’ll follow you in to Hell. For real though. Thank you for guiding my path through this transition from D3 to the complex world of D2. Never played it when I was younger (couldn’t, religious parents), always wanted to, and so glad I now have the chance to experience true Hell. This means the world to me.
Once upon a time you find a video here, that's worth watching more than once no matter how long it is. Superb content, absolutely amazing D2R guide. Subscribed
One thing to mention for retrieving your corpse when you get PK'ed. PKer's will throw items all around your body in hope you click it instead of your corpse cause that item will become equipped cause you are naked. Then when you click your corpse it pops and your items are FFA. If you dont have room in your Inventory. Now if you come back with a new set of items equipped and click your corpse make sure you got inventory room or your corpse pops and FFA. Also side note on gold penalty for death. Let's say you dont want to loose gold and you know you got a tough fight coming (ancients) you can empty all your gold on ground empty your entire stash and you will loose zero gold. But only recommend if solo. Anything dropped on ground is FFA. BEST thing to do if PKed is leave game join another retrieve corpse and its items safely in town.
I'm 34, bought the big box when it came out, my memory was a little lacking loading up resurrected the other day, this was the perfect primer to get me ready to master what I could not when I was but a child. Thank you!
Another point to add on to item farming; some items are better off being farmed in Nightmare. Say for example your 80+ sorceress is completely decked out and all you need are a pair of War Travelers. You are MUCH better off farming for those in Nightmare difficulty, because not only can they drop as early as Normal cows, but in Nightmare their drop chance won't have to compete with all the potential elite items that drop in Hell. True, you'll be missing out on some potential trade items and runes, but it's something to consider if that one item you need can drop in Nightmare.
I remember nightmare act 3 mephisto was one of the best places to farm.. drops shako and loads of good stuff and not to avoid the elites with gold find gear.
been playing diablo 2 for over 15 years off and on I play loads of other games but this one usually the one I come back to always. never hurts to see a guide even if your an experience player.
Do note for the newblets out there when killing countess do it on players 1 I as you will be farming her for runes and the higher player count actually decreases her chance of dropping multiple runes. Also you get the runes for ancients Pledge for free by doing Act 5 quest 2 (freeing the barbarians) from the guy that you hire mercs from.
Your videos have always gotten me through some tough times. The release of this game and your videos and streams have truly gotten me through this rough patch. Thanks man.

@@mralloc23 I played a few hundred hours of Diablo 2, and probably never went beyond level 65 and the first act of hell. All of that is explained by the fact I played on offline solo (obviously) self-loot, and that I played all the classes except Paladin. I'm not surprised by his comment.

41:00 Also if you equip items after you die to go get your body and your inventory is full, whatever item slot on your character that you filled with an item and pick up your body, the item that originally occupied that item slot is now gone and disappears.

I had forgotten how this game was hard. It's definitely harder than POE at least and the strategy is key. (Not to detract from POE it's an amazing game on its own)
Ngl I was ganna say poe was harder. Then I thought about how easy the crafting was and the poe trade system was for you to get item trading currency. So yea d2 is harder but there is a lot more rng based into it. However if you got a group of friends d2 becomes really easy since you can filter gear to each other. I would like more crafting stuff into d2 but if that was the case I might as well continue playing poe.
Coming into this from D3 and never touched D2 before, despite all the criticism of D3 I actually enjoyed it thoroughly. Looking forward to playing this, thanks for the video Rhykker!
D3 is generally easier and more relaxing to play (not a criticism, I've got some 2000 hours on there). If you're familiar with Path of Exile, that can make going backwards to D2 a smoother experience. It's more technical and less forgiving. Still fun, just in a different way.

Most people on the internet always talk about minmaxing/builds with D2, but I remember just playing the game just to advance as far as possible enjoying the story and the atmosphere :/ Sure getting new items was nice, but I don't explicitly remember farming bosses. My highest char was in the 70s so I was no way hardcore, but a part of my life was me playing D2 in the darkness of my room well into the night and it was good enough :)

At 9:55 - you need 25 strength for the "Belt" not the "Heavy Belt" (which is correctly listed/pictured here as requiring an unnecessary 45 strength).

This was a wonderful refresher course as I haven't played this game in over 10 years, and I actually learned 1 thing as well
I can't believe the day has come. It's a good time to be alive.
This game has been in my life 18 years yea this is crazy
Yeah I lacked an internet connection back in the day, so I never even realized runewords existed, lol.
@@Brekner nah. my classmates back then figured it out for me.
Gonna try this out
Many thanks for this! Just getting started again in D2R, want to really specialize a character, appreciate the heads up :)
Bigger tip: d2r fixed that bug, she drops as if she were glitched all of the time now.
Wait what ? So if you do rhat you get better odds for drops ?
@@mattfend2343 ohh 😂 so no need to do that now ?
old time d2 player here, still watched through the whole thing, you covered pretty much everythig new players need to know, in as easy as possible way to understand
They fixed this a long time ago.

Or enough Dex to max out block if you're gonna use a shield, and you probably will given Stormshield is OP for survival/PvP.
How do you just grab Sigon's complete set? In all the years I've been playing, not one of my characters have been able to complete it. Lol.
I'd watched a few beginner guides before this one, and while they touched on a lot of the same stuff, this was by far the most well put together one.
Just purchased the game, just a couple of more hours until I can play again after many years. I feel like a kid again 😂 Amazing video thank you!!

24:25 I loved how Rykker went "heh, well you're gonna have a fun time finding out" when mentioning duriel. Anyone who found that amusing has played original D2 back in the day.
I’m stuck here now with a level 21 Amazon. I’m grinding all of Tal Rasha tombs to get strong enough to not die after 2 seconds.

Protip: Storing gold in a "shared" stash tab will prevent you from losing it on death. Just keep enough in your personal tab for repairs.
Yep. Which is as nonsensical as not being able to pay merchants from the stash.
DUDE
Yup this is a treat to find out. Still it's a pain in the ass you can't enter a gold amount so I take out a full sack worth of gold when I need potions and put it back in stash after
Mega Man
Great video!
A very important topic I'd like to add is breakpoints!
You attack and Castspeed and your hit recovery depend on the animation. This will change at specific intervals, so as an example: a common breakpoint for the cold fire sorc is 63 faster cast rate, and after that it is useless to stack more fcr UNLESS you reach 105 fcr, because that is the next breakpoint for the next animation (it was tied to frames - yeah old game!)
You mentioned this, but moved right on and it is one of the most important things to know to optimize your character for hell and on.
I think a lot of players would consider this a "min-maxing" technique so it was left out of the Beginner's Guide video. But important, nonetheless.
@@Furious321 I think referencing break points is perfect for beginners. Every new Caster out there is going to immediately equip the 1st 2 fast cast rings they find without realizing that the 2nd one is doing absolutely nothing for them.
Been watching a bunch of beginner videos for D2R and this is by far the best one
Holy crap, having never played Diablo 2 and starting with Diablo 3 there seems to be so much more restrictions and at the same time much more freeing builds it seems compared to Diablo 3.
yes, d2 is defintly the better game
D3 in my opinion was not the best, was still playing D2 after that lol,.
D3 was all about the sets, but with D2 it really depends what you want to do, might get some really awesome yellow gear , and the gold or green items might not be as good.
Yes, Diablo 3 does not have the replay value Diablo 2 has. The way the skills work in the game was really off putting for me.
The “yell at enemies until they die” isn’t nearly as weird a concept for new players now that Skyrim has been out for so long.
This comment just makes me feel old
Bro, I’ll follow you in to Hell. For real though.
Thank you for guiding my path through this transition from D3 to the complex world of D2. Never played it when I was younger (couldn’t, religious parents), always wanted to, and so glad I now have the chance to experience true Hell.

Don't throw gold on the ground, put it in the shared stash where it doesn't count for death losses.
@@IAmTheRealBill yeah in D2R you can do that. But old Diablo you didn't have a shared stash

I had to Google- Why is wirts leg red boxed 😆
I really enjoyed watching this. It's nice to have a video that goes over the game from the basics to end game content. Diablo 2 got me threw my teenage years like a lot of my generation being from the 90's. Iam very excited to start playing D2R and replay a game that has had a impact on me as a gamer. Iam very excited in playing a Smiter for this playthrough. I usually played with a sorceress or I'd have a huge army with either the druid or necro. Say anyone out there still rocking the ultimate strategy guide from the original Diablo 2?
First time ever playing D2 here, loving it so far. I'm level 10 and going okay. :D I personally love outa gold pickup (As in other games) And I did turn off screen shake, it's just not for me. :D I do hate elites or rares or whatever that slow the sh*t outa me.. xD
Anyone else counting down the time to play? Been looking for more long ass hour long videos to consume before it begins!! (Glad you've got your hat back on Rhykker!)
I’m so fuckin hyped I couldn’t sleep said fuck it and decided to get up lol
Exactly. I passed out last night watching guides just finished this one. This guide was the best ive see so far also it will be my first playthrough.
Rhykker after dark, working late! SOON
This is one of the simplest yet most detailed guides for D2 I've seen yet. Amazing content as always bro. See ya in game 🍻
Yeah Duriel is so fun for beginners. 😁
don't remind me of this stupid slug -.-
'sigh' so, again, buying dozens of telescrolls :P
@@ondratel Inferno Mode was... an interesting time for D3.
Back in the days, I never would have played d2 were it not for my genius mother putting together a pc for me to play it in. Bless that woman for supporting my every decision, miss you momma
Coming from poe, this doesn't seem too overwhelming.
I remember playing the original D2 for hours after school. In the good ol' days of dial up connection. With D2 resurrected I get to now play it with my kids. We have done multiple runs on D3. Really excited to show them D2.
Deckard "Rhykker" Cain: "Settle down kids, looks like it's time to..."
/PLAYERS8 *"Stay a while, and listen!"*
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!!
*cringe*
I'm absolutely loving D2 Resurrected. I watched half this video at 1.5 speed, then the 2nd half at regular speed, and after the first half the second half sounded like you were drunk to me.
He was drinking with gegliesh from act 2
Duuuude.. Favorite game of all time. I'm so fucking excited for this - and I'm STOKED to be apart of the game launch.
Also really nice to see a lot of new players who never got to play as a kid. And I can't wait to PK every last one of you. >:D
See y'all in Trist-001 tomorrow.
Same,I'm one of those players..went down a looter rabbit hole 5 years back when I became disabled. Enjoy bro good times!
Thanks for the video. I'm just getting back into D2 after many years and I had forgotten about so many of these things. This was a great refresher.
Refusing to pay Blizzard anything until they sort their shit out, but still appreciate all the work you do, Mr Rhykker.
id agree, but two points, you're only hurting the employees who are dedicated to getting you a good game, and you're missing out on something you'd enjoy
I dont care.
That’s funny because google is going through the same type of lawsuit, yet here you are on UA-cam.
Played Diablo for years and years ... still watched the whole shit. Listening to it just made me like playing the game again. Had no idea about the potion stacking thing thou ...
I watched this just for background sound thinking I wouldn't learn anything; but I had NO IDEA that my defense went to 0 while running.
WTF I didn't know that antidote/thawing/stamina had a stacking duration either....jesus......
I didn't know you could log out and your corpse will come to town.
I've been playing D2 off and on for 15 years and I still learned something haha
