Tearing Down our First Engine Build! 350 Vortec to Chevy 383 Stroker - feat. 1999 Chevy Suburban

  • Phil tears down the first engine we built that was originally pulled from the 1990 Chevrolet Suburban. Crank had lots of excessive play, which we deemed most likely caused by not correctly getting the spacing between the flex plate and torque converter correct during installing the transmission. But you live and you learn! It’s going to be rebuilt bigger and better next time.

We're actually quite surprised this thing ran as well as it was running. The crank play was obviously destroying starters, but other than that it was running like a champ!

    That's crazy it was running.

I know why your roller cam has play in it, it's missing the cam plate that holds the cam into the block behind the timing gear.

That play in the crank would that cause a serpentine/pulley to slap/tick on a 350 vortec? I’m planning to replace my harmonic balancer but my truck is at 268k miles and still purrs. Just didn’t wanna go through with it if I just need to go ahead and do a full engine rebuild lol
