I'm coming here after watching Daniel's recent reviews and the progression in quality and energy from this one to 2020 is great
He has gotten SO GOOD at reviews (and videos in general). And he just keeps getting better!
Same
Daniel, it's great that you read the book...personally I think its strength is the power of the characters, both divine and mortal, and how Shadow learns more about his identity by navigating the border between the worlds of Gods and Humans. As for the tv series, there are amazing aspects of it (Anansi's character, for example) as well as other parts that are a bit underwhelming. I'd be interested in hearing your impressions of the series, its strengths and weaknesses
I read Neverwhere by Gaiman and that made me go for AG. Both are very good IMO.
Is no one going to comment on how he pronounced “Gaiman” ?
Many people who haven't heard it pronounce it that way. Not a big deal.
I will. I will comment about it.
@@reamus9102 I chose to be that annoying person who makes it a big deal.
@@samm8190I respect the enthusiasm. I will stand with you on that hill.
@@moorejb1 typical Hetero normative white washing trying to erase a famous “gay man”
loved the book. tv series was ok. Love the channel. wouldn't mind a break down of charectors in this book!
I'm here because of the new Blind Guardian's song 😁
Wow you have not read Neil Gaiman? He does immortals very well. The Sandman series is so good. American Gods is my list only because of how well he did sandman. He made a Death character that you reall came to like. Plus he has been a wirter for TV and movies he did the adaption for Princess Mononoke. Love him as a writer. But he is a lot more famous for Comics
Great review! I just read this last month, and I really thought it was so-so. I gave it 2.5 stars, as I wasn't at all invested in the characters or the plot. I was interested in the world though, and Gaiman's writing style did suit me.
I actually read it a couple of years back, I wanted to love it, but I just couldn't. Now i decided to reread it and now, I actually love the novel. I think the first time i didn't fully comprehend it, but now it is so good!
Does he keep saying "Al Franklin" instead of "Al Franken"? kol just thought I caught that a few times.
Yup. It's Franken.
I still think about scene with cave child. Forgotten hero in movie. So Forgotten double. In book his short dark story was as a line connect all fake impressive gods. Unconscious. Death. Wild. Make this fantasy world real and sense. Not journey son of oneeyes Odin but victim of unwisdom destiny. Primary Darkness.
You would probably really like his graphic novels called "The Sandman" it's a great series.
Did you watch tv show? I adored the book, was really stuck in and was especially thrilled with the unexpected climax. So, I was soooo disappointed with tv show. It ruined precisely what I had loved most. What did you think, if you watched?
Everyone stays the exact same for the whole book but Character score was 7/10? That's suuuper generous tbh
Yeah you definitely need to read more Neil Gaiman. One of the best fantasy writers of the last 30 years.
Just read American Gods and wanted to see if you had a review up for it... I'm pagan. I actually worship some of these Gods (I'm in Europe). And it actually fits. It was a very strange read, but a very good one. I'll be thinking about this book for a long time. It provokes deep thoughts and I really like that!
I really enjoyed the book, but I had to stop watching the show. I just didn't like it at all. To me, there are much better shows to watch with the limited time I have.
Awesome video. It's Al Franken
I read a couple of Al Franken's books when I was in my late teens or early 20s. I deeply resented his high-handed pedantic tone, though I will grant that some of his material was amusing. I considered his new book upon publication but felt that he was as bad and lacking the humor.
Good job with the review. I really liked the tv series and I recommend it.
Read this book over ten years ago. I thought it sucked. I dont remember anything.
This is hands down my favorite book...and like...it's kinda boring...nothing REALLY happens...there's no mega awesome super God v God v man fight it's handled with a "hey...let's not...y'all are being hoodwinked" but everything about Shadow's journey is so...tasty, so real, so real...so human
yes.
Good review of the book overall I enjoyed it, the big gotta moments were pretty easy to see coming and the overall all story was much less epic than I was hoping for the characters were what did it for me they were interesting and relatable to the point I took the time to look several of the gods up to learn more about them. As far as the &?$@ head biography I’d rather let Edward scissorhands preform a colonoscopy on me than read anything (other than an obituary) about al franken.
The "What the president did to the country" mentioned aged like sour milk.
So it’s adult Percy Jackson
Not really.

I did end up reading it, though I didn’t find it super engaging
Well that’s not quite true, i guess it wasn’t super exciting, maybe I just didn’t like the pacing
@@erikcarp9359 I read it 400 books ago or so but all I remember is depressed man whose wife died is having a terrible decade finally gets out of jail and gets repeatedly screwed over by the old gods who are all bastards. Nobody is even slightly happy at any point except during the mustache twirly evil bit.
@@asingleshot7
That sounds about right
Al Franken
Show is not as good
This is one of the only books I've ever stopped reading because I just wasn't enjoying. I looked up the wiki article afterward and, once I saw how it ended, I was glad I stopped.
The series is much better than the book, it solves some of the problems at least I had with the book (sexism, plot, undeveloped characters...)
