Gates Of Lodore Rebirth through the Birth Canal Triplet Rapid

  • Here’s a clipped up video of the carnage we experienced on Triplett rapid!
    Triplett rapid gets its name from a set of 3 large boulders that hug the side of a cliff on river right. The current wants to pull you straight into them requiring a lot of paddling. If you end up in between these boulders it’s referred to as “going through the birth canal”. This rapid is known for flipping and pinning boats and puts the captain at risk of being pulled into a sieve that doesn’t want to let you go.
    In the video you can see one of our members Brason holding onto a rock, this was just after being thrown from his boat into the river head first. Let me tell you that the scariest thing I’ve experienced in my life was seeing one of your best friends go into the water in a rapid and not float out. Especially with a head first maneuver!
    Luckily everyone made it out safely and as a group we managed to work together and most importantly get one of our group members out of the birth canal and also get both boats and the other captains out within minutes.

    Wow. The overwhelming number of mistakes and bad decisions of this incident sure do support the notion that NO ONE on this trip actually had any idea what they were doing. The fact that it didn't turn out far worse is simply incredible. As the old saying goes: "I'd rather be lucky, then good." Consider yourselves lucky. Very, very lucky.

      Having the will is not the same as having the skill.

    Had anyone on this trip actually been on a river before? What a clown show.
    The person in the oars at the beginning of the video could barely row and it looks like he was the “experienced” one.
    Wow. I’m stunned to you all made it off the river.

    Glad you are all O.K. I've run lodore couple hundred times at 800 to 12,000 cfs. never ran right in triplet, never ran the birth canal, don't think anyone ever should; too much risk.

    Be there in 2 weeks, I am thinking a downstream ferry away from that mess for a little insurance policy. Yikes

    Near as I can tell these people are definitely not in their element! I love the gates of Ladore, run many time "in a kayak" never had support flip or pin on any of those trips! The positive? Everyone is ok.

    You've gotta counter-stroke using both oars man. You were only ever using your downstream oar.

    I have to ask, did your group scout this before you ran it?

    • @headyfloaties9422
      @headyfloaties9422  2 роки тому

      No we didn’t scout it. We stopped at the campsite before and another group rolled up to camp and we rolled out instead of scouting. Almost all of us never ran Gates of Lodore before. Defiantly was preventable and was a learning experience and some people shouldn’t have came on the trip but a lot of us have ran way more difficult rivers since this video. We scouted Hells Half Mile which went seamlessly with perfectly line. Defiantly should have gone into triplet with a downstream ferry. Could have avoided everything entirely.
