How to EQ Your Kicks to Mix Louder

  • I think a good kick sample sounds just as loud on tiny phone speakers as it does in headphones or a car stereo. Here's how to EQ your kicks to do just that. With the dystopian infinity of sample packs available, there are a lot of of kicks that sound great in solo but just never sit right in a mix....unless it's paired with the perfect other elements. This is terrible for a sampler-based workflow because most of the time it leads you down the wrong path.
If your kick sample isn't clicky enough, you'll inevitably turn it up too loud, overemphasizing the lows and low mids, which will then need to be turned back down in mastering to make your track loud, leaving you with an awkward end result, void of warmth and power.
If your kick sample is too clicky, you won't turn your bass drum up enough, which is a very uninspiring way to work...no sub or power until the mastering engineer puts it back in. Unless you recognize that lack of low end during your process and add it in using the bass, again, robbing your kick of its fair share of impact.
In this video I show you exactly how to walk the fine line between too much sub and not enough, too much power and not enough, too much low-mid energy and not enough, too much click and not enough, and how to make your kick translate to all kinds of speakers. It's all about the EQ.
By EQ-ing all your kicks the same, you have a starting point that is always telling you the truth, regardless of your listening environment. From there you have the option to cut down on the click if you notice the hats are pushing kinda low, pull back on the sub if you want your bass there, or boost the mids if the rest of the track is just icy machine noises. This is just a starting point that attempts to maximize your options for the rest of your song. But another benefit is that your ears will become trained to notice when a kick doesn't sound like every other kick you have, and hopefully that will help you use those more effectively too.
