As a collector of spare parts for this engine, I'm pleased to see that at least one person has gone further and fitted an entire spare engine. Keep up the good work with these videos. Btw, my engine is the 2002 freshwater cooled. Seeing 40-year-old seawater cooled engines in good condition makes me wonder if the freshwater cooling even makes sense. It's really a hassle to deal with the heat exchanger.

Smashing video Rob - informative, well paced and with lots of extra information and tips to help the boat owner on a budget. Keep up the great work.

I bought an engine like this 16 years ago for my 1924 catboat. The previous owner of the engine had noticed a loss of power and a Volvo mechanic had recommended a new engine. That's why I got this for very little money. When I got home I discovered, that only the actuation lever for the gouvernor was worn out, so that it was no longer possible to apply full throttle. A little bit of welding and filework fixed ist.

Fingers crossed it's still running in 16 years time. Good little engines!

Brilliant, thanks! My boat has a 2002 and I’m so pleased you’re taking the time to make these clear and well detailed videos. 🙌🏻

Brilliant, Having the same model and only knowing the most rudimental stuff on the engine I found this video very interesting. And btw I've been thinking the same thing. Getting a spare one. Maybe do a stripdown and learn how to put it back. Thanks!

Thanks mate, I have a VP 2003 that refuses to die, and a spare VP 2030 if it does, so I appreciate your plan..

Hi Paul, yes a sort of insurance policy. I can't afford a new engine.

I love your video. So calm in your presentation style and easy-to-understand commentary. I'm also based in Suffolk, on the Deben and this winter I shall be embarking on rebuild of a Penta Reverse Gearbox, as it currently sticks in reverse. Do you have any experience of gearboxes/transmission units?

@@banier1 I’m going to make a new episode on the sail drive gearbox later this year. Just need to find the time. Thanks for your feedback, it’s difficult to make engine maintenance videos exciting. Good to hear you enjoyed it.

This looks like a demo engine for a engeering school or museum, or who delivers an engine with a switch and everything ;)

Hi Boatmattias, interesting comment. The engine came bolted down in its crate.
I added the fuel system and made a starter box so I could test run in situ.
Under the green paint (seen in the video) was a base coat of "duck egg blue" colour.
You could be correct with an engineering school theory.

Hi Paul, I assume you've got a spare engine not an oil leak.

I don't suppose you took measurements of the large O ring? I'm going to have to replce my front crankshaft oil seal and thought I may aswell replace that too, but Volvo want £12.24 plus VAT and postage for one!

@@MrGorsky sorry, I didn’t. The O ring was part of a rebuild kit. Hope the seal replacement goes well.

@@sailingwithus5743 Thanks anyway. The fact you mentioned the old seal is 35x47x7 has already saved me £20. Thet're about £2 each at my local bearings place!

Hi may I ask how you sourced the engine and if you have any recommendations?

    • @sailingwithus5743
      @sailingwithus5743  5 місяців тому +2

Hi Nick, I got the engine from eBay.
Try and buy a runner, even if it's got starting issues or low compression.
A top end rebuild should sort out the problems and give you a reliable engine.
      Hope this helps?
