I believe the main reason that the DX7, DX7II, and D-50 sold so well in the '80s was their super slick looks and ever present logo on the rear panel. These were seen all over the place on stages and on TV, it was great advertisement. But the beauty of these instruments is not only skin deep. These are very capable, fully programmable instruments, with practically infinite sonic potential. I like the fact that these instruments were targeted at true keyboard players. The DJ style loop triggering and knob twiddling needs not apply here. One needs to be an accomplished keyboard player to make these instruments shine. Of course, Hiromi will make Nord Lead shine without even touching a knob laden panel. But then once again, instrument is only as good as the player's performance. Sad thing is that most of today's listeners favor DJ's instead of live bands, maybe because a lot of new bands just can't play keyboard instruments well anymore. Drum machines and sequencers are cool, but without hip keyboard playing parts being present, drum machines and sequencers are as good as auto-accompaniment keyboards, which is not very good. I won't even go to arpeggiators. Anyway, my point is, I don't see too many classically trained musicians playing synths anymore. They used to, in the '80s and early '90s maybe. A classically trained jazz musician could make jaws drop with a flute solo on the D-50. I don't suppose I've been seeing this sort of thing in recent times. That's a big letdown, I think.
Thanks! One more professional record on the hi way! Glad to see presenting on the one of my favorite synths with appropriate respect. Enjoy! God bless you!
The sounds of the pianos and the synth brasses are the reasons I love the Roland D-50. I'd love to own one of those one day, as it reminds me of a simpler point in time in music: the '80s and the '90s.
now you can own one for cheap - the botique model just came out and is pretty close to a clone, at least in terms of the sound. Interface is probably a bit changed.
Thank you again for this, the best demo of all the voicings of this legendary synth I have seen to date! Your adaptive style of playing and phraseolgy is inspired, and really showcases the instrument's potential!
Very cool playing, I am after one of these. You make it sing! I am old enough to remember it's release, you were not around yet, had you been, you could have sold a ton of these for Roland!
AT 15:05...Sounds like "Lucky Man" by Emerson, Lake & Palmer...I have that D-50 patch or one very close to it. Very nice banks you have loaded and you are a very good player.
So ... here I am, three years later with a tiny but mighty, spanking brand new Roland D05 Boutique! I opted for the safe road and bought a new thing instead of a three decades old one. I loved my old one to death so it died. The D05 sounds like the D50, no better no worse. But it has 6 banks of presets and 8 banks of user presets so you can load in your own SysEx sounds, so that's an improvement. Otherwise it's just a little D50 with a really small footprint, and to be honest I don't know where I put a full size D50, so that's great. Now I can play my silly songs the way I want them and record them in my DAW on more tracks than I can mix haha so I won't do that ... but I could. Imagine fiftyeleven tracks of Roland D05 !!! Happiness! :D
You’re one of my favorite keyboardists on UA-cam. Superb and tasteful playing as always. Would you mind sharing this custom set of patches you have going? Cheers, FF
Excelente!!!
OMG! i haven't seen playing like that in a long long time really Burt Bacharach in a way! are those factory patches? i loaded mine with stuff i found on the net.
Hi I have one of these but I cant figure out how to make it change sounds. Its stuck on some electronic sound but i'm trying to get it to sound more like a piano. Would you mind helping me out a bit, pleassee?
Valeu!!
My internal banks really sound different from yours. My internal banks are from the limited edition ROM "Best Choice" bank (known in Japan as "Special Selected sound library" according to Bobby Blues' website). Why don't they sound the same??
Mr. Gomes, thanks for the wonderful demo as usual. Not only those sounds but also your playing is so enjoyable! Out of 3 digital greats from 80s, D-50 is my favorite (overall I am a fan of Yamaha synthesizers though). I see you like DX-7II and D-50. Have you tried M-1? What was your impression if you did?
Shit am I impressed. I bet this guy makes any keyboard sound good. Now I think the D-50 was ahead of time. Then I was searching the net for Thiago Gomes music, and there is nothing, not even on Jamendo. Is this right?
Hi! I had a question about the Roland Jv 90. Can I use roland d50 sounds on the Roland Jv 90? Is it possible? Can I transfer Roland d50 sounds via computer to my Jv 90 card? Thanks!
Hi Thiago, this is another fantastic Job, you made. I have seen your DX7II Video about the fantastic EPs! The D50 does also bring very warm and bright tine EPs! Are These all factory sounds or do you use selfmade patches ??
Are all of the patches you played from just the stock internal sound bank? Based on what I'm hearing, I can't seem to find most of them from my internal banks! Yours have got those beautiful D50 and rhodes pianos...Would you mind indicating which patch numbers your sounds came from? I only have the PN-D50.00...Thanks!

I ALWAYS AVOID USING ARPEGIATORS THEY WERE MADE FOR LAZY PEOPLE ...SORRY VANGELIS
Thanks!
One more professional record on the hi way! Glad to see presenting on the one of my favorite synths with appropriate respect.
Enjoy! God bless you!
Thats the D-50 Demo ive been waiting for. No Talking, no Bullshit, just straightforward excellent playing! :)

Dig the lead synth tones very much.

Very True !!!
Nicely said and yes he's a phenomenal player and demonstrator!
At 2:33, the Roland D-50 internal patch "Fantasia" is/was heard.
Very cool playing, I am after one of these. You make it sing!
I am old enough to remember it's release, you were not around yet, had you been, you could have sold a ton of these for Roland!
It as SO "of it's time" and used widely, that this is like being in a time warp. It, of course, sounds warmer and richer than one remembers.
bravo not just on the sounds but on the playing! wow!
Good job!!! love your style
16:02 is the same sample used in David Lee Roth's "Skyscraper"!! I had no idea!
Best Roland D-50 demo ever !
My God...such a wonderfull Rhodes - e piano stuff.
i love the bass and synth brass split wow
17:06 the evolution of that sound is terrific! WoW!
I have a D-50, but not that sound.
Damn, dude where did you learn to play so well and yet look so young?
Just goes to show you, practice makes perfect!
Demo muito boa, abrangente e esclarecedora; parabéns, Thiago Gomes.
Your playing is really nice!! Thanks for the video.
what an awesome demo of the greatest synth of all time!
I really enyoyed your demonstration! Especially the last 10 minutes :)
AT 15:05...Sounds like "Lucky Man" by Emerson, Lake & Palmer...I have that D-50 patch or one very close to it.
Very nice banks you have loaded and you are a very good player.
COOL NICE VIDEO INCREDIBLE PLAYING ! THE SOUND ARE CRAZY
Exactly!
Man! I need to get another D50!!! :D AWESOME demo!

@Roashan In a word, no. The two synths have a different sound architecture. The D50 patches are only compatible with the D550 rack.
THIS IS BEST VIDEO IN INTERNET ABOUT ROLAND D-50!!!!!!!!!
THANKS))
Great job. You play wonderfully. :)
You’re one of my favorite keyboardists on UA-cam. Superb and tasteful playing as always. Would you mind sharing this custom set of patches you have going? Cheers, FF
What a fantastic musician. Just traded a guitar for a 1985 Roland D-5 Timbral Synth to help me write more songs.
thank you that was beautiful!
Fantástico esses timbres
great playing!
nice playing and sounds man
That's some serious keyboard tickling right there! And the D50 does NOT sound like it's 30 years old! :D
this the korg m1 and Yamaha dx7 all were great but I think the Roland d 50 was the best one out of the 3
12:54 Jump simula muito bem um Oberheim OB-Xa
Sensacional , tu é fera cara.
superb demo. if not for its monotimbrality, i'd probably buy one today.
You can get the Boutique version, the D-05 which I believe *is* multitimbral.
Velo Brass Awesome Star Fox SNES Better Samples Amazing Synth Love It! 11:57
Maestro ! You're the Best man !
7:01 Stoke It! Chris Sawyer's proud.
Congratulations. You could say of patches used in minute 14:41 (flute) e 17:45? thanx
Someone who can really play for a change! The camera angle looks a bit like Linus from Peanuts playing his toy piano though ;-)
Despite the Velveeta factor, this really is a magical synth.
What's a Velveeta factor?
How cheesy something is. :)
Velveeta? More like Brie to me. There was some great sounds coming outta that D50, no denying there.
Master!
To a muy bonito
@thiagogomestoledo hello, wow i wish i could play like you do good job! how do get these sounds for my d-50? thanks.
Yo man, you're too sickkkkkkkk. Peace.
OMG! i haven't seen playing like that in a long long time really Burt Bacharach in a way! are those factory patches? i loaded mine with stuff i found on the net.
Can you play the theme song to to the NBC-TV drama series Law and Order? What about the 70's TV show called, Taxi? Your playing is fantastic!
Thiago, your demo is wonderful! what kind of patch have you used? are the factory sounds? thank you very much!
Hi I have one of these but I cant figure out how to make it change sounds. Its stuck on some electronic sound but i'm trying to get it to sound more like a piano. Would you mind helping me out a bit, pleassee?
Fantasia is synth bells.
Adam Samuel Harris Fantasia is at 02:33.

10:48 Great! what is the name of that patch?
Are all of the patches you played from just the stock internal sound bank? Based on what I'm hearing, I can't seem to find most of them from my internal banks! Yours have got those beautiful D50 and rhodes pianos...Would you mind indicating which patch numbers your sounds came from? I only have the PN-D50.00...Thanks!
