  • Since buying an Epson V600 scanner six years ago, I haven't had a chance to scan any positive image slides, despite scanning thousands of color negatives. An opportunity to do so arose recently. This video goes through the process.
Note: I forgot to mention it in the video, but when scanning color negatives and slides, which are transparencies, the scanner uses the top light source. It is therefore necessary to remove the white document mat that sits inside the scanner cover.

Thank you! I just started scanning my dad's slides from the 60s and 70s and I have the same scanner as you. Working great so far...

Thanks Phil, great and very helpful. I've downloaded what appears to be the latest software (Epson Scan 2) and it lacks many of the features you describe. This is strange and it's not apparently just a different UI that is hiding things. I've yet to find a full auto setting. Any advice would be welcome. It's weird that I appear to have a more up to date version but it lacks features.

On my computer, I have Epson Scan and Epson Scan 2. They are different programs. I only use Epson Scan, not Epson Scan 2. Try to find a copy of Epson Scan to download and give that a try.

This article recommends upgrading from Scan to Scan 2, but I have both and I prefer the original version.

It would be good to highlight the need to remove the document cover before scanning slides. Thanks for the video. Cheers.

I thought I'd made it clear that slides are transparencies - thus light is shone through them, rather than reflected - and for this to happen the scanner needs to use the top light source. Additionally, the scanning software will put out a message if you attempt to scan transparencies with the document mat still in place.

Thank you! I was not getting a message to remove the document mat.

Have you tried Silverfast 9 or VueScan software to use with and control the V600?

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  9 місяців тому

At one time, Epson users could download a free copy of Silverfast. I tried it, but can't remember the version. The interface was more user friendly, but it did nothing that Epson Scan couldn't do and I actually preferred Epson Scan. I haven't tried VueScan.

@@PhilUKNet I prefer VueScan and Epson....not so much Silverfast. VueScan provides a bit more control and I've had better results with it, especially when scanning slides and negatives.

@ms2668 Thanks for the tip. I've read lots of comments online raving about 3rd party scanning software, but, to be honest, Epson Scan does everything I want. If I get some free time (and can download a trial version) I'll give VueScan a look.

      I have used both.
Silverfast that comes with a free license for your epson scanner. Not an easy license to get and it is cumbersome but possible
Vuescan on my Linux Ubuntu 22. Based on some UA-cam videos and some testing, with the right settings and practice silverfast should give you better results

Do you use Windows or Mac? THe program that comes with it will not work for Ventura on the Mac. I wanted to know what programs will work with this.

Sorry for the delay replying, but UA-cam didn't notify me about this comment. I use Windows 11. I have no experience of Mac at all.

Hi photo friends I have a Epson Prefection v500 scanner but since I up dated to Windows 10 some timeago the Epson scan does not work with Windows 10 any more giving a warning that Windows is looking. has any of you listeners have any idea as how to get my scanner working and scanning negitaves again. Hi from IRL.

@@brendanwhite3731 Before I switched to Windows 11 I was using Windows 10 with my V600 and it was OK. All I can suggest initially (and I hate this advice) is to make sure everything is completely up to date - all the Windows updates and the Epson driver. If that doesn't work, maybe try Epson support. Is it just Epson Scan? Do you have any other scanning software, and is it working?

I don't think I can help you. Best to search on Google for this problem and whatever operating system you are using. I've had some problems in the past with my V600 and Windows 10 that were resolved by reinstalling the device driver. In addition to checking that the wired connections are OK, you could try downloading the latest version of the driver and reinstalling it. Good luck!
