I wish you a Merry and Blessed Christmas. Happy Hanukkah to you Brian.🎄 I watched you live a little late, so I'm enjoying your video with my morning coffee.🎄🎄🎄
I would have loved joining in, but I had this whole "family" thing to do. For which, by the way, I am highly grateful. I did watch some of it later and was very touched by Slay's generosity. He's a fine young man in a difficult situation of his own. His generosity shows his true nature. He's a good person.
Bah!! I wish I hadn't missed this, but will be sure to catch the replay soon! Happy Holidays Brian, and a big congrats for all the success this year. You're the man!!
Hi!!! Merry Christmas, Wera! You have a pass, it didn't start until what 1-2am your time?!?!? I'll do a daytime live one of these days and you can join in :)
Brian the best book reviews are spoiler free then there are live spoiler discussions which I just love like a book club. Sometimes the non live ones are even the best so there is no distractions! The ones Allen & Dr Chase did for the Faithful & the Fallen and for Guards! Guards! are the gold standard!
Brian I appreciate your thoughts on Wind and Truth. I spent about a year and a half and read almost every book Sanderson wrote (even many non Cosmere novels) I saved Stormlight for last and even though I LOVED Way of Kings, by Words of Radiance I had definitely soured on him. I felt like the books had gotten formulaic, and like the length of the books in no way justified the payoff. I still see The Way of Kings as a favorite fantasy novel but at this point I’m really on edge about reading more in Stormlight.
Yeah, I think you get my feeling on it pretty well. It's not terrible at all. It's just seems systematic and at times really heavy-handed when I crave more nuance and subtlety.
Team replay! I hope you've had a good holiday so far! I may end up adding more comments as I watch, but at 37 minutes in: 1. I saw Anitha mentioned in chat that you should join the Senlin readalong with a bunch of us in Allen's Discord but don't know if you'll see it and am afraid I'll forget to mention it later if you don't see it. I second this, it'd be a blast if you joined us! 2. If you do decide to take this down after the holidays, I vote you edit and post all the Rick Thunder lore we got in this live 😂
haha, I think I will likely join you all! Also, I'll probably keep the video up a while, but good to know Rick has fans out there demanding more backstory!
And as I’ve read more as an adult I’ve found a deep love for Gene Wolfe and other fantasy authors of that ilk. TBH Sanderson is almost an anti-Wolfe author. He’s all about very large books with clear messages and pages upon pages of magic and worldbuilding with very simple prose. Wolfe fits a ton of meaning into a very short word count, keeps the worldbuilding on the periphery so you have to work to find it and writes theme in such a way that it takes a lot of pondering, meditation and discussion to figure it out rather than it being spelled out.
It's exceptionally hard to go from the prose and style of Wolfe to Sanderson if you are in the pro-Wolfe camp like I am. He intentionally spells little to nothing out for the reader, giving them the credit that they can understand it on a number of levels
Everyone's running after editors being die hard fans so they dont say no to sando. What if they do? What if they say, this part is dragging, that is too focused again on mental health and you're not psychologist sando? What if those critics dont reach sando because of publishing company or sanderson simply ignores them because he knows people will buy his books anyway. Also, I've never heard criticism being this loud, that even he himself felt need to comment. So maybe something will change in future books.
I think the expectations of this book were tremendous. And I do think he has a hand in crafting those expectations. It feels to me like he enjoys that aspect of the business. For me, it didn't deliver on them for a good 900 pages of it. But, plenty, and I mean PLENTY of people will love it regardless. Yeah, I'm not really pointing fingers at his editor. More about the process that his material didn't need to be 1300+ pages for what I read. I think he ultimately decides what goes in the book.
I love how everyone is trying to micromanage every part of Sanderson’s process because the don’t get a book 😂 “I know he’s got a ton of beta readers, but who are they?” Like really? Who are you? Are you gonna personally vet each and every one of them when all a beta reader needs to be is a reader with perspective
@@BrianBell7 okay… I was a bit heated last night. Emotional holiday… I understand the criticism of the editing especially since he got a new editor for this book. I just didn’t think it was cool to blame the beta readers. Which I’m not btw
Team replay here just wishing you guys a happy holiday seasons. Keep up the good work Brian!

Brian please have Benghis Khan on Whom the Bell Tolls!!
yep, we've already discussed :)
