Serena wasn't afraid to attack the Graf forehand when she was in a position to do so and that made the biggest difference. Monica Seles did the same thing when she was inside the baseline in her matches against Steffi.
Playing Steffi to her forehand was one of the best tactics to play her in my personal opinion. Steffi's favourite shot was her inside out forehand (while running around her backhand) and so she was constantly camped out on the backhand side of the court so that she could get that shot set up. Her forehand when running for it was not as good in my personal opinion. I remember players like Sabatini would hit glorious backhands down the line and Steffi would often be all the way on the other side of the court, expecting Gaby to hit to her backhand instead. But being that so few players had winning head to head records against Graf, I'm willing to bet that playing to Graf's forehand was probably easier said than done. If she was the one able to dictate play, opponents were often playing to how she wanted. Only a handful of players at that time could take that away from her.

Evert had these skills which allowed her to keep up with power players and during their time, many said Evert's groundies had more pop on them than Navratilova! EVERT kept up with each year from early 1970s until the end of 1980s, including beating Graf and giving Graf a close 3 set match in 1989 when Graf was dominating (and considered the power forehand from Germany, foreland forehand). 1989 was year Evert retired and approaching 35 but held up excellently.

Graf was awesome. To win a minimum of 4 singles titles in each of the Grand Slams is a huge accomplishment. I don't believe anyone has done that - some have 3 singles titles but not four.
How fortunate we all are as tennis fans to witness two of the best female tennis athletes of all time battling for this title! Steffi at the twilight of her career while Serena’s was ascending in 1999. Steffi’s forehand winner was fire 🔥 at 7:54. Amazing how powerful her forehand winner was against a difficult backhand drive from Serena. Steffi’s lightning speed and footwork allowed her to run around and hit her famous forehand from the backhand corner. I know it’s all about her athleticism, timing and effortless technique. I can’t help but compare Steffi’s godly forehand to powerful forehands today where you can see how much effort current players exert to generate power while taking advantage of racquet and string innovations. Though you have to acknowledge Serena by showing us the result of hitting a forehand with a lot of effort and strength starting at 10:58 I wonder how Steffi’s forehand, which is the greatest forehand ever, would look in the modern game with all the racquet/string technology. Combined with her athleticism and uncanny accuracy, it would be a more heavier and deadlier forehand! Her backhand slice was the best ever too! No one, not even current players today (with the exception of Roger Federer), can hit a knifing slice like Steffi. With racquet/string innovations, it would be “Death by a Thousand Cuts”! If I could put both Steffi and Serena in the same era (either in the late 80s to mid 90s or in 2000s at their very best), I’d go anywhere to see the Greatest Forehand vs. the Best Serve battle it out and compete for grand slam titles!!!

@@carrerau7138 It takes a female athlete to be at the top her game to win a Slam. That was the form Graf was in when she won the 1999 French Open after her surgery. Your "reconstructive knee surgery" excuse for Graf is only valid for the period she was absent and recuperating. Level of tennis got tougher. Fitness became more paramount. Injuries became more common. Younger athletes took the sport to another level. Graf didn't seem to have that mental fortitude to meet that kind of new challenge and play into her early 30s; particularly when she lost to Lindsey Davenport in the 1999 Wimbledon Final in straight sets and retired in the 2nd round of her next tournament because of a hamstring injury. She called it a career at age 30. I know a former tennis athlete who showed tough mental state, overcame life-threatening injuries (hematoma and a pulmonary embolism) and returned to tennis at age 30. Won 10 Slams in her 30s. Graf lost here by a narrow margin, but was on her way back up after all the injuries and was able to win the French Open again a bit later same year. To retire shortly after Wimbledon was nevertheless the right decision. It would not have been good for her to continue duelling with the Williams with her battered body.

God knows what she wouldv'e done to steffi in 2012 ....
It's a crazy tennis universe. Graf's final years and last year (1999) to play professional tennis and she faced a batch of new players who are Monica Seles fans. Serena, Venus, Martina Hingis, Anna Kournikova were all Monica Seles fans. Graf could have stayed in the game until 38yo like Navratilova if her back stayed healthy. Maybe realistically until 34yo as Graf does want to retire and to have a family. But alas Graf got another injury and retired after Wimbledon 1999. It would have been great to see how Graf handle her game in her early 30s. Graf was a gifted athlete in speed but not in strength. Navratilova had it all except mental strength. Navratilova's mental strength was medium compared to everything else that was superb. Serena could be the next player that has all the physical gifts, and mental strength. But her skills not as polished compared to Hingis. I think because Serena skipped the junior years. Worth it? To skip juniors and to save the body to endure the pro years was genius planning. Serena perhaps by skipping the junior years, her body remained strong throughout the pro years. Versus Graf who did play in juniors and she had multiple injuries throughout her pro years. But Graf's technique for the forehand was probably more responsible for causing injury. Graf's lateness in hitting the forehand over time caused a lot of stress to her body; hence the injuries.
@Max E That's not a fair assessment to be a fan. I'm a fan of Seles, but I don't have a poster of Seles. I did cut out pictures of Seles from newspapers and magazines to add to my collage, but I also did that for Graf, Navratilova, Sabatini and Hingis. So, having a poster of a favorite player is not a prerequisite. Like really, now "we" have to have fan barometers?! As if. No, that would be ridiculous. If the player said they were a fan then they were a fan. Doesn't matter if they are a casual fan to a serious fan. There's no denying Seles' impact on the new players; especially, with the grunting.
@Max E Watch Serena Williams at the Stephen Colbert late show. Serena said she was a fan of Seles and that Seles was influential to her. Look it up. Again not knowing all the stats of their favorite players does not mean someone is not a fan. Conversely provide a few quotes where they said they were not fans of Seles. Again not knowing everything doesn’t mean they are not a fan.

At that time teenager Monica Seles, who is 3 1/2 years younger than Graft, had already won 8 Grand Slams tournament and was the best player in the world.
She used to roll over it like Mauresmo/Henin but abandoned that in exchange for a slice backhand around 1987. If you think about it, it made sense. Steffi knife'd it so that opponents would have to put topspin on it to lift it which played into her eastern forehand shot. All she needed was great footwork to get around the ball quicker, which she had great footwork.
She didn‘t need a different backhand to win the Golden Slam and 50 % of the tournaments she played during her career. Players with not so great backhand slices and forehands needed it, though. Didn‘t help them to win as much as Steffi.

Evert even at her best could not have competed with the power players. Everts indeed fortunate to have played in an era devoid of cannon forehands & backhands.

lol EVERT could and did play and BEAT the power players. 1989 US Open beating Seles in straight sets with only dropping a couple of games. EVERT loved COURT game (which at the time was considered power.) This was due to EVERT's supreme technique created by Chris Evert and Jimmy Evert, perfect technique, timing, and footwork. Not to mention EVERT's supreme anticipation.
COMPLETE RUBBISH+ EVERT played with power players of her era and won. Stop trying to compare current with past. Would you compare your current computer with one 10 years ago, no. TECH improved and helped players.
Evert's pinpoint accuracy, consistency, sense of anticipation, tactical acumen and mental toughness is second to none. If Wozniacki, Halep and Kerber, Barty can win Grand Slams in this era I definitely think Evert can as well.
Evert developed power herself with new rackets and training. Would have no problem in any era as she was mentally tough and had great anticipation and strategy. Only a dumbass would compare her to powerless and purely defensive Wozniacki. Evert dictated play.

Though you have to acknowledge Serena by showing us the result of hitting a forehand with a lot of effort and strength starting at 10:58
I wonder how Steffi’s forehand, which is the greatest forehand ever, would look in the modern game with all the racquet/string technology.
Serena wouldn't stand much of a chance against a prime Steffi. Steffi is a much better athlete and has a versatile and complete game which would reduce Serena to fits. She's also mentally stronger.
@@PravoslavniVitez I agree with you to some extent. It takes a female athlete to be at the top her game to win a Slam.
Had a vast tennis dominance that can't be narrowed down to a particular period unlike "1986-96 years" for Graf according to you.

@Max E Then don’t watch. Read the transcripts. I don’t care what you do. Nobody cares what you do. You do you; however, if Serena said she was then she was. It’s her words. And since you didn’t watch the show or read the transcripts you don’t get to speculate. Oh, people have to prove to you with evidence on a silver platter while you impose what you think makes a fan?! No, you don’t get to do that. As if!

Glad she is gone. A terrible role model for young girls.
@@carrerau7138 Oh please, shut up. She's an athlete. If she's too rough for you, get out the way.
@@carrerau7138 39 slam titles. That is all.

Steffi’s only backhand was a slice backhand. Oops
The evil Serena was NEVER as good as Steffi.
Serena the GOAT vs the fake GS champion stefi.
Goddess vs jester.😂😂😂

@@serveoutwide original GOAT vs GOAT black tennis player.😆😉😉
Serena is not even the greatest player of her country, son.
Sharapova grunts louder
piu' completa serena. graf stupendo gioco di piedi, ma troppo inferiore nel rovescio e nel servizio.
Haha Serena REKT Graf..
Steffi did herself a favor by retiring 😂😅😅
Serena was unranked at the time???
Serena's face here looks different.
I don't think it does. She just looks older. Which she is - it's been 20+ years...
Steffi had a bad day xD
I dislike both of them, though i admire their physical accomplishment. Serena's grunts are so annoying that the tennis federations should have taken a note of them. Steffi Graf, though gracious in defeat this time around, is generally a sour loser and unfriendly character.
What about Sharapova and Azarenka?
There's a lot of women players whogrunt mo than Serena what about Sharapova fool!!
What about M sharapova, the so called Azeranka come on style up
EVERYONE SPOKE BS ABOUT MRS.SELES GRUNTS BUT WILLIAM WAS SCREAMING. AND PEOPLE WERE TO COWARD TO SAY ANYTHING. THAT IS BLACK PREVILAGE.
