Well, been there done that. Loved shovelheads. Outside oil lines to the top
end (since 1962) electric start primary covers with no leaks. I bought new
engines back in 1968 for $640 from Neidengards Harly dealership. and a spare
front cylinder head for $103. Lift off the rear rocker box, turn the jug 180 degrees
with push rod clearance notches in the fins, drop on a front head and bolt the
rear rocker box back on. Results were the same exact cylinder ports on both
cylinders, two tillotsen carburetors, one per side, jetted for a sportster engine
and pointing straight at the intake valve. The rocker box fifth bolt got a brace
down th the cylinder base bolt. After the first one it was a 3-1/2 hour job total.

I've owned a couple of S&S Engines and work on them occasionally, they are top notch! I really enjoyed this series, alot of hands on bike building without all the scripted drama!

In an Einstein moment I was looking at my frame jig in 1968 and realized
I could bolt tall steel blocks with countersinked allen bolts under the the four pairs
of bolt bosses and build the cradle out of 1/8 sheat metal with a peak on
the bottom and a sloped down top on the right side. The undertranny area
was extended back and morphed into a castle fender shape. Held five
quarts and vented thru the downtube up to the neck for bearing lubrication
on the steering head. A stepped down seating area with a looks like an oil
tank off a sportster but actually a battery box for the huge ugly electric
start battery. The key switch and ignition capacitors went in there too. All the
wireing for 2 dozen one off bikes went thru steel breke line/hydraulic pilot line
tubing put in as the frame tubing was assenbled. No sharp edges to damage
wireing with the steel conduit and really easy to fish wires thru. The follow
on bike had the bearing mounts for the jackshaft on the sculpted frame oil box
with the swingarm bearings on the same shaft and a horizontal sporty rear
coilover just above the transmission cover, an area cleared out by having
a two front head shovel top end. Bike seven with an inner fender liner on
the rear fender for the oil tank got hot as a deep frier. Replaced that with a
3" pipe tank spaced out and inline with the single front down tube. Ugly it was.
Bike 3 was a handshift on a rachet top transmision cover. The lever was
a Hurst flat handle and Hurst T- handle shift knob. The bottom end was blended in
with a welder polished and rechromes. Excuse me that was bike 2 with a
sideshift transmission top. Anyway A LOT of people wanted to know where
I got it and I referred them to a speed shop on Pa run by a guy I didn't like.
He eventually figured it out and did some threatening phone calls. I put a picture
of it and his contact imformation at a few swap meets. Bike 27 was a nosecone
(alternator) motor. Never liked the look of it and quit building at about age 37.
Been thinking about doing a Kawasaki Vulcan 2000cc when I turn 80. Lot of
new ideas thought up over the years. Still riding a stock Kaw for transportation.

loved the brotherhood when everybody was tradin parts , hit swap meets , carrying one side of your saddlebag with parts you MIGHT need , the other side with tools ta put em on with .......back in 73 gas shortage seen many a scoot with some kinda extra tank strapped to tall sissy bars with extra gas !! Now is good , just in a different way ( to many tryin to be like what they see on television not even close to being able to keep a scooter in the wind ) . Least they ride.

the shovelhead design is the apex of the V TWIN, the evolution was not a step forward ,just a compromise, when they drag race this bike they always use a shovelhead design,i guess they got tired of scattering parts

What the hell is the deal with burning out a tire?? I just never understood this. YEAH... lets throw our money down the drain and ruin a tire!! I mean if you got money to burn... but even at that... I still don't see what's so cool about ruining a tire.
