This video shows various traffic lights in the UK and how to turn left, how to go ahead and how to turn right at traffic lights.
Most traffic lights, apart from pelican crossings, change in a certain order. The order is as follows:
Red - Means stop and wait at the first solid stop line.
Red and Amber - means STOP. You can prepare to move off, but do not set off until the green light shows
Green - you can go if it is safe to do so.
Amber - stop. If you pass the line at the lights and they change to amber, you can continue. If you are too close to the lights to stop safely, you can go through on amber.
Red - Stop
Treat junctions with traffic lights in a similar way to a regular junction. Use the MSM routine and slowdown as you get nearer to them.If you are approaching some traffic lights that are on green, expect them to change, especially if they have been on green a while.
Check your mirrors on approach to the lights so that you can decide how much to slow down. If the lights change just as you get there, but there is someone following very close behind,it may be safer to go through on amber.
If they are on red as you approach try to anticipate whether they are going to change to green.
Signal your intentions to change lane or to turn, and choose the correct lane or position as soon as possible. Always be prepared to stop and do not try to "beat the lights".
Look for pedestrians who are already crossing and give way to them. Watch out for BOB (bloke on bike) passing you on the left and TOM (teenager on motorcycle) overtaking on the right.
Green Filter Arrows
Filter lights are green arrows that tell you to filter in the direction of that arrow. The main light may still be on red, but you can set off if you are going in the direction of that green arrow.
Be careful if the green arrow goes out as you approach the lights. The traffic opposite could get a green light once the filter goes out. You will need to give way as normal if for instance you are turning right at a crossroad controlled by lights.
22 years on the roads with no accidents, but this is still something I like to come back to. Thx for the vid ;)
Thank you so much for this - situation at 6:24 always ends up agitating me... (when there are no filter boxes) - love the calm explanation.
Thank you so much for your videos. I am for six months in UK and I prepare for driving theory test.
Oh I passed the theory on with the practical lessons next week.. I will definitely be watching more.
Great stuff calm voice over makes it easier take in all the information. I'm about to do another theory test in a couple of days as failed the multiple choice by 2..🤦🏾♂️(41) but got 61 on hazard so close.. Just need to remember signs and traffic 🚥 lights some road markings. I hope I find what I need in your videos.. I subscribed to 👍🏾
Very helpful video 👍
Really helpful
Thank you 👍
Well done 👍
Very helpful video. thank you..
What if we cant see road markings from back if they are cars waiting on top of it ??..
Very good video ... thank you
Brilliant... thank you
Thank you very helpful
Thanx very good explain
Many thanks
I know sometimes right lanes can be straight ahead. How do you know when it is straight ahead without looking at the arrows
How far ahead should a no right or no left sign be positioned on a main road before a junction so we could safely manouvre. On Stamford street in Waterloo, they've fixed new restricted turning signs atleast 40 metres before a junction to catch drivers out. thanks
Thanks....
at 12:28 you said "ahead and left" but should be "ahead and right. Good vid thanks.
If both sides has green lights and the one who has to turn left has the right to turn left first or the opposite one has the right to turn right??
LIKE
Much appreciated for the lessons :)
Glad you like them!
Than you this video really helpful 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
Tnx men
What are the rules if traffic lights are out at a box junction and you are going straight on, and exit is clear?
Sweet
Where i live the traffic lights go from green to red which is really dangerous.
how do i know that oncoming traffic have red light so I don't need to wait middle of the road when turning right?
Really help thank you for making videos 👍
thanks, like and share and ill add some more :)
Richard Miller Adi thank you sir 👍
If you don't mind please tell me are you give driving lesson in Halifax too please reply
Richard Miller Adi am asking because am fail 8 times I don't have enough time my theory going to expired in July
do you live in Halifax?
I been to one country where the green blinks for several seconds before it turns yellow and then green.
same as malaysia....
thanks dickie, are you in dublin?
12:30 What if the left filter light goes off and the other lights are still on green, are you still allowed to turn left?
Andrew Ashcroft no because the other signals are protected and not permissive, meaning you can either go straight ahead or right. If there was a solid green light, you could still turn left.
On your last example - if the lights to go ahead went on but your right filter arrow didn’t - do you have to wait for your filter arrow before you can go or if the way is clear, can you go on the main green light? I hope that makes sense! X
if its a circular light you move to and give way at the point of turn. If theres a green ahead arrow only you wait for a right arrow to go green before moving past the stop line.

No problem
Halifax:D
it would ibe interesting to see the combination of the traffic light, which are placed in oposite of each other with the junction box in a middle. What happened when you cross first set of lights on the green and as soon you passed it and continue driving in the junction box the both sets of traffic lights are immediately changed in amber, and as you are approaching second set of traffic lights, the light changing into red light. What do you have to do in this case? Keep moving on the red? Or stop by this second set of red traffic light and blocking traffic turning from the left? I was in this situation yesterday and now I am literally waiting for a persecution notice for broken a road signals rules. Here was definitely Incorrectly adjusted time of chenging lights.
Galina Alexandra i was in this exact same situation today, did you end up getting a fine?
The lights are relating the the stop line, once you have passed it the lights are no longer relevant.
If there’s no second stop line, you keep going.
Nice car
👍
Could go out
How about doing traffic lights such way, that the poles are anchored to ground with quite like big needles with wings. Light poles could also be made or mounted with so called controlled force handling type, when greater they cut off. To prevent traffic injuries when confronted. The brains of the lights could be in acrylic substance molded smart phones with sufficient applications. Energy could be gained through stimulated emission of microwave radiation from emitters mounted to street lights and receiver mounted to each pole. Led-technology and affordable smart phones makes this kind of traffic light very easy and fast to mount, and they could interact through 5G network so that mathematicians could try to optimize like whole cities or dense populated local area with one pooling of information. No need for inductive looping sensors, just cameras with figure and motion understanding applications. No need for wired information network or local computer. No need for electric cording, just closest streetlight quite reasonable power level emitting and harvesting. Microwaves such high level, that no risk for tissue warming. Would not be fun and nice? Dunno.
You have traffic lights that light yellow and red momentarily before it turns green?
Alan Decowski yes because most drivers in the U.K. still drive manual/stick/standard. The red/amber tells the driver to get ready to go, ie select gear, check surroundings etc.
@@shaun1293 thats actually fantastic
Alan Decowski it’s helpful and more safe :)
You are saying we can not enter yellow box unless our exit clear.
Unless you are turning right then you can stay in the box
@@ismori but only if your exit Rd is clear ie the Rd your turning into.
Ayy it's Halifax
1:20 🌕? Можно?
Very quiet! full volume and cant hear you well
Ohmy god. Right hand drive. !! Safe????
