    Watching this video made me realise I’m not overthinking when I feel like my instructor isn’t teaching me the right way. Focusing on going slow in the beginning so the learner can absorb the information is the best way to teach; speed can come later, as you mentioned.
    I really like your teaching style. If I lived closer, I would have inquired about lessons

    That tip about 3 seconds on amber is great. I've a habit of piling on the brake as soon as I see amber. This has lead to many harsh stops under the impression a solid amber is just another red. Good reminder that I have that bit of leeway in case I need it!

    Thanks so much for this video. This has been my error.
    I came across this video last night and after watching it, I went for my test this morning and passed with relative ease. No errors from traffic lights.
    I passed my practical test today.
    Thank you so much

    "Don't be afraid of white line, but the oject." ...Very useful hint to me.❤
    I appreciate of your talkative attitude to share us your observations and hints. So many useful points to remind me as a learner, how many details I have to pick up there even I have learnt the skills, particularly those are involving safty issues. I realized that those subtleness actually can lead to much of varied driving on the road as some can be safe driving but others could cause dangers or even serious accidents.🌹
    Thanks for the great vedio as always.💕 thanks also Domas.⚘

    As always your videos are a joy to watch Richard; I love doing this traffic light lesson with pupils - it's where I usually tend to see a big increase in confidence and ability.
    I also use the lesson to show that Joe Public is prone to making lots of errors (especially in relation to correct positioning) and how we can safely avoid such problems.
    They always finish this lesson absolutely buzzing; I love it!😊

      The difference between traffic light signals is set out in the traffic regulations. Your instructor could have assumed you know the difference already. :)
      In my case, when I was hesitating the very 1st time at a GREEN ARROW traffic light signal (I was a bit unsure if the oncoming traffic shall let me pass first), my instructor just said that I don't know the traffic regulatations, and it's dangerous to drive like that. And that I should have a more thorough reading of the book. Nope, he did NOT tell me the difference. 🤣
      Alas, I had already known the difference between the two but in the midst of great newbie driving anxiety, one gets to second-guess one's knowledge.

    Great driving education Richard, my instructor always taught me to check what's going on behind me too as if you slam on the brakes when the lights are on amber cars could end up going into the back of you, the 3 second rule is a great idea. It definitely makes it an easier concept to get your head around.

    Hi Richard, I passed first time last Thursday with 8 minors, and your videos have been incredibly helpful in helping me learn to drive! I watched a lot of your videos before every lesson and they were invaluable in teaching me a lot of things about learning to drive.
    However, my driving examiner was a bit angry at the end of the test. As we pulled in to the exam centre to finish the test, he said "I can tell you that you've passed, but I need to ask you a question". He then asks me "how often do you check your mirrors?". I have no response, I just say "umm" for a bit, and then he says "you might as well have done this", and then reaches out and points the centre mirror to point up! He told me that I don't check my centre mirror anywhere near often enough, and that I must check it every 5-10 seconds, and he told me that he would have failed me if he could (I got 4 minors for mirrors/change direction, and 1 minor for mirrors/change of speed).
    I was shocked cause I vividly remember in your video about mirrors that you said pupils are not required to check their mirrors every X seconds to pass the test. I told this to my driving instructor and he agreed too, and we both were confused. (I also made a longer post about my experience here if you're interested in reading it: reddit.com/r/LearnerDriverUK/comments/13xjre3 )
    What do you think about my examiner's comment?

    • @KindredBrujah
      @KindredBrujah Рік тому +4

      They may be simplifying it to explain their frustration - you need to check your mirrors enough that the information you're receiving about what's behind you is appropriately fresh. If you're zinging along an empty dual carriageway, you probably don't need to check as often as if you're navigating winding city streets.

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  Рік тому +7

      Congratulations on passing. It's the examiners personal opinion, it's not something I agree with or something that's required. I think the examiner was out of line to be "angry" with you when it's not something you have to do or is necessary and may mean you're not concentrating on the road enough if you look backwards more than you need to.

    Thank you!!!! I am attempting to be a driving instructor, unfortunately I've held a full car licence for over 25 years and need to add I have hoed a full motorcycle licence more years than this. I love the thought of helping people get independent but... isn't there always a but.... I'm a good driver rural and dual carriageway, put me in the city, boy I realise my weak points, my city has changed so much since my younger day. So just watched your superb video of "right at lights", I'm now fluent. Great job! Your pupils may have a lot to take on but you have just explained to an old hand the right hand light possibilities - what do I do at these? absolutely so well I have no questions. I do hope they appreciate how well you have de mystified, de cluttered right hand turn traffic lights. Off to watch some more video, awesome work. many thanks

    As always, Richard, an interesting video. I agree pelican crossings were better than puffins but many drivers went on the flashing amber. I think that's why they've been mainly changed, However it is annoying as you say to wait several seconds when the crossing is clear. The sensors need to be more sensitive.

    Some really good knowledge in this video mate especially about passing the large vehicles at lights. Passed my test last year mainly down to your very helpful tips as my instructors weren’t fantastic.
    Wanted to also add, at 34:50 you were talking about junctions where you pass behind cars, there is another 4 way junction I know of in NW London just north of Ruislip Manor Station (I did it many times in driving lessons 🫣), it can be quite tight especially as most people don’t respect the road markings. Thought you’d need more than 1 example to check out if you decide to 👍🏻. All the best Richard.

    Hi there, I've been enjoying your videos a lot. Came to this channel as I'm currently taking driving lessons and have found your content quite useful.
    But man it's harsh around here in Bogotá, motorcycles outnumber cars, potholes everywhere, in a lot of places there's no lines on the ground, caveman drivers.
    Oh and I don't know what my instructor is thinking, on my THIRD class, I was already practicing going uphill in a pickup truck with a very strict clutch (no surprise, it stalled multiple times).
    But hey, I'm alive, I can keep watching your videos!!

  • @ITNoetic
    @ITNoetic Рік тому

    Something that we get in the US that I'm not sure about in countries like the UK is that drivers can see both the traffic and pedestrian signals at a distance. So I never find myself thinking about whether I'll slow down or speed up when the light turns yellow.
    Instead, I glance at the pedestrian signal; if it's white, then there's plenty of time for pedestrians to begin and finish crossing, meaning the light will stay green for more than long enough for me to pass through. If it's flashing red, then the traffic signal has several seconds before it changes to yellow. And oftentimes, the flashing red pedestrian signal also has a countdown to the traffic yellow, telling people how long they have to cross.
    What this means is, when I see a traffic signal, I can decide oftentimes 10+ seconds before I reach the light what I'll do, and either speed up or slow down accordingly to ensure a smooth drive (though I don't typically slow down while the light is green).

    Hi Richard, if you are looking for an example of a junction where examiners will expect learners to use offside to offside positioning then take a look at the large cross roads near to this postcode in Watford, WD24 7ND. If you approach this junction on either of the single carriageway roads and turn right onto the dual carriageway then offside to offside positioning provides the safest method. However, learners have to be wary of oncoming traffic that reaches the middle before them as the junction is not marked up to show how to position and many drivers get it wrong and dive accross in front, which can cause a lot of confusion.
    This junction might be a good use case to support the other videos you've made on this subject. I am a local ADI and would be happy to help if you'd like to get in touch.

    26:29 im pretty sure Equestrian are also known as "Pegasus Crossings" in keeping with the flying animal theme.
    The Toucan crossing gets its name as its both bikes and pedestrians, thus "Two Can" cross.
    Puffin crossing is the acronym you mentioned.
    Pelican crossing comes from "Pelicon" for "PEdestrian LIght CONrolled" crossing.
    And the original animal, the zebra crossing for obvious reasons. Not a flying animal as its not traffic light controlled.

    26:36 - Great video Richard. Love the way you provide so much information on the 'why' certain things happen rather than just providing direction. Is that still true at 26:36? Doesn't the latest highway code indicate that you should (or even 'must') stop at pedestrian crossing if someone is waiting (unless of course it is unsafe to do so)?

    • @ryanmitcham5522

    Love your videos, Richard. ❤ Thank you so much for the effort you invest into them. 😊 Question: If you are waiting in the middle and it is clear, can you turn BEFORE the green turn arrow lights up???

    The pupil's answer to the first question was incorrect.
    It is common the have a right turn priority with no arrows showing this.
    So the light in the opposite direction could be green or red .
