Summary:
Recorded just over a year after Santana played its historic Woodstock Music & Art Fair performance, the band was fast becoming one of the biggest in the world. They were about to release their second album, Abraxas, and were riding high on the heels of three hit songs from their debut album and a new Top 10 hit, a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Black Magic Woman."
A year earlier - in fact only a few days before the Woodstock Festival - Bill Graham staged the first of several concerts billed as "The Fillmore at Tanglewood." Tanglewood is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the storied venue had just begun to experiment with staging contemporary concerts on their grounds. Staging a rock concert in a classical venue had yet to be done, so of course the concept of doing so excited Graham. He brought the full-scale Fillmore East production team in, including the Joshua Light Show, and booked a great lineup. This first concert featured B.B King, Jefferson Airplane and The Who, and drew the largest crowd that Tanglewood had ever seen by far.
Buoyed by the event's success, Tanglewood and Graham agreed to stage three similar dates in 1970. The last of these is this show, when Santana headlined after The Voices of East Harlem and the legendary Miles Davis had played (you can hear Mile's set here).
This historic and beautifully recorded performance features a smoking performance by Santana in the last year of their classic lineup, before a young Neal Schon joined the band. We think you'll agree it's an incredible performance by a great band in their prime.
The original Santana band. Never ever again was Carlos flanked by 5 truly extraordinary musicians: Gregg Rolie, David Brown, Chepito Areas, Michael Carabello and Michael Shrieve INDIVIDUALLY had amazing stage presences, that when viewing these videos, I don’t know who to actually watch. The power of their first three albums will forever be unmatched.
That's exactly how i feel man !! Too many super stars on stage !
Watching this I'm thinking if it was just audio one could easily assume that the band's leader is Rollie, as it befits keyboard players/lead vocalists in most bands. But Santana is not "most bands" as is obvious here where we look at an apparently aloof guitar player/backing vocalist and yet, Carlos' charismatic leadership is as obvious as the sun in the sky. His musicians appear to revolve around him even though he's the one actually doing the rounds. However that being said, as solicitous as he may appear he was reputedly as demanding and unforgiving to work with as were Frank Zappa and Neil Peart (the lyricist/percussionist of Rush fame and one of the best drummers in rock history was a legendary demanding workaholic and expected no less from bandmates), if that is humanly possible. That probably explains why Carlos Santana had so many people playing in his band(s) over the years, then quitting over apparently trivial quibbles, they were emotionally exhausted. But that also explains Santana's enduring popularity over the decades because whoever made the sound, it will always remain that unique Santana sound. Rock, Latin rock, fusion? No, Santana!
and the drummer was like 16 or something..
..
So true. 6 geniuses ✨✨✨✨✨✨
Without a doubt, a very balanced band, all the musicians were monsters, and the originals were magical.
This lineup of Santana was the best in my opinion. Every single member of the band is a star in his own right. Together they prove that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
Never did Santana have such a great keyboard player ever again.
Tanglewood must be one of the greatest sets they ever played .
So lucky it was filmed so well ...
What a great band they were ...
My favorite Hammond organ solo of all time
Best Santana line up EVER.
I was in Vietnam at 19 yrs old this time @ Long binh and to day @ 72 im still grooving on this absolute greatest sound.
Unreal sound RnR History.
I love Gregg Rollie's voice
@@gregnormal55. What?
This music would drive and influence so much other music that came after it
This blows my mind, I was 12 years old when this was happening. I had to sneak in to see Woodstock in the theater at the time ⏲️🙄😅😒😂
Look how they play together like a real band, not all spread out on a big stage like the glam rockers that came after. Santana is legendary. Their music spans the ages and will never be forgotten or go out of style. I love these guys.
Dude was a talent magnet, with the exception of Cal Jam the most celebrated bay area rockers.
Couldn't say it any better 👍👍
Goddamn fucking fantastic !
Santana Better In The 70"s ' Than Now!!!
Absolutely!!!!🙌🙌🙌👍👍👍
you´re goddamn right!
You could say that of almost any band from the 70's that's still around and can't produce new music because fans want to hear 70's material from them.
I agree...
No Shit
Wow Gregg Roile sang this #1song awesome by Santana 👍👍👍great vocals, plus Mike shrives, David brown
That BAND was killer.Greg Rollie, very underrated keyboard player.Bar nun.Great drummer too!

3:09 love how that dude just walks in
Awesome
All the Loudness but yet still relaxing.#Wow
Nunca mas veremos otra banda como esta...grande Santanaii
Que grandes musicos
That drummer is insanely Good!!!
Which one? Chepito was a percussionist but many refer to him as a drummer, Shrieve was the actual drummer. Percussions (including drumkit and bongos) were a Santana trademark, it's hard to say if it's those or the organ that made Santana famous. One band whose organ broke through the ranks and into stardom in those years was Deep Purple even though Jon Lord did not stick with the Hammond all the time mostly due to roadies complaining about its weight, he would use synths tuned to replicate the Hammond sound as well as that of the massive pipe organ he played in church as a teen.

Yea
Ahhhh the 70's
Awesome Gregg Rolie
An extraordinary feeling between the musicians, whithout computers and strange artifices. Just great music.
Very strong and clear rhythm that captures everybody's soul, fantastic
I saw Greg Rollie play this with Ringo's All Starr Band. It was super good.
Organ Hammond sound+Percussion...Bass Lines + Guitar...omg !
Amazing recording quality. The tone of the organ and the playing are so good that if they hadn't gotten the guitar working again, I would be happy to listen to some more of Greg. I already just listen to mostly the organ section of this video. Awesome bass and percussion.
Gregg just tore it up in this entire concert
I was one day old when this show took place. I wish I was at this gig rather than hanging around at a lousy hospital with my mom!😜
One of my all time favorite.. India
Pure gold☮️❤️🙂
All the videos from this concert are awesome. Thanks for making them available here.
I saw Santana in concert here in Sacramento back in the early 70s when I was in high school he played along with Tower of Power I think either downtown 4 Cal Expo but he was on all the Chicanos in the brown power thing that's what it was anyway love your music many years later just to let you know it has meaning I went back right away
Helle!!! How are you doing today, please pardon me for intruding into your privacy but I just wanted to know if you’re a fan ? Have a great day… Stay Safe!!
Superb organ solo. Sounds like one of the old late-50s Hammond B3’s or C3’s if I’m not mistaken. Greatest analog organs ever made.
That’s gotta be a B3, I’m telling you! 😅
Rich and lush
Gregg Rolie the best lead singer Santana ever had.
best performance, audio and video!

¡¡¡¡UNA JOYA MUSICAL!!!
QUE AÑOS ENTRABA A LA VOCACIONAL.
That Hammond sounds extra crisp!
Historia de la música contemporana , perdurará x siempre !!!
just one year after Woodstock
I wish this whole concert was on iTunes
This should have been called "The Gregg Rolie Band". That guy was the soul of the band, with all due respect to Carlos Santana.
Love it. Obviously having some sound issues. Looks like Greg and Carlos were a bit distracted.
Evil Ways
You've got to change your evil ways... baby
Before I stop loving you.
You've go to change... baby
And every word that I say, it's true.
You've got me running and hiding
All over town.
You've got me sneaking and peeping
And running you down
This can't go on...
Lord knows you got to change... baby.
When I come home... baby
My house is dark and my pots are cold
You're hanging eround... baby
With Jean and Joan and a who knows who
I'm getting tired of waiting and fooling around
I'll find somebody, who won't make me feel like a clown
This can't go on...
Lord knows you got to change
Organ Solo...
(Repeat 2nd verse)
Yeah ... Yeah ...
What a moment in time ❤ 2:46
Very good . . .
Those key boards MAN!!!!!!!!
Chuladaaa mi dantanaaa
サンタナのファーストアルバムに収録されていたカバー曲です❗カルロス・サンタナとグレッグ・ローリーがひとつのマイクで歌うところが新鮮です。カルロスがまだギブソンのSG を使っていますね。のぶ😘
❤
I think the recorded live at Tanglewood sounds the best somehow somewhat(:

Descomunal solo/improvisación de Gregg Rolie. Superior EW original & EW Woodstock. 1:15 a 2:51 esenciales para intérpretes Hammond.
7 people are crazy
As always!
15 Years old acapulco golden
Muy linda las letras , en caso de la vida real que nos pasa a muchas !!
Y sobre todo muy buena intérprete
Thank you!
Tanglewood best live show ever.
Nothing beats the Woodstock performance.
Makes you wonder what if Greg Rollie just sang the whole song
I think he had more to do with vocals on teh original version on their first album, it has been a few years.Karl
Отличная, народная музыка.
Gregg Rolie's band
ขอบคุณครับ 😎😎😎😎
❤️🥰😘🤭😂😂😂😝😝😝
Ma i 93 che hanno messo 👎 che problemi hanno? Cazzo è un CAPOLAVORO!
Is keyboardist using same machine that Manzarek used for The Doors?
Well no. Manzarek played Vox Continental with Rhodes Bass on top. This is Hammond B3.
0:40 Carlos realizes his voice mic is off, goes to David's one (David finding the situation funny) to keep on singing on, while (off cam) a sound engineer is getting carlos mic working again until probaly 1:15
¡¡¡¡ENORME GUITARRISTA!!
CARLOS SANTANA
TREMENDA ROLA!!!!!!!!
언제나들어도멋있는노래음악군대가기전에이노래를들으면서춤도추고노래도들으면서감회가새롭습니다
Santana without Greg Rolie was not the same music, the hammond was the instrument.
🤙🤙🤙🤘🤘🤘✌✌✌🙌🙌🙌
What chords are played, on this song?
Does Carlos use a strat for his rhythm work? when recording?
Ese tecladista es bravissimo!! De lejos mejor q Santana... Lo opaca
Greg rolie
aint that the truth !
Much deeper version. Boring at Woodstock as they were just getting started, Here is a faster version, better slow.
Carlos’s playing is good and all, but I’m here for that organ. Gregg killed that solo
