    I love the idea of smart mirrors, item assistance and not having to stand in a line but, as someone that does work in retail, I'm terrified of these benefits too.
    Retail is how the majority of my age group are able to work. If stores don't need someone to find items for a customer or serve them at a till then, the most common job on he market is going to be the most difficult to get just to earn minimum wage.

    Transformative technology will have such a big impact on the way customers shop - and the way retailers conduct business. Adopting this new tech, in some capacity, will surely be demanded of business owners.

    I predicted this a loooong time ago and even looked into it as a business service, buying clothing in a VR world.

    The smart mirror in store doesn't help. A big reason you want to try on clothes is to see how they fit you

  • @richagrace6297
    @richagrace6297 6 років тому +12

    The smart mirror thing could just be a crowd puller than actually increase sales. One of the biggest challenges of e commerce since its inception has been that it never got people over their need to touch and feel the product before buying it. similarly i feel that even with smart mirrors people would want to wear product and feel how it fits. on a side thought, it could even be hacked into right? bit creepy

    • @lifelonglearners9784
      @lifelonglearners9784  6 років тому

      Something watching you and potentially learning about you and your style... Bit creepy? Probably!
      There tends to a be a link between foot traffic and sales so if it does pull a crowd it should lead to extra sales.
      I doubt we will ever lose our desire to touch and feel. The mirror shouldn't act as a standalone technology but rather be integrated into the process so it is easier to determine if you want to try on a different style or colour.
      Thanks for the comment Hilly

      U can actually buy a smart mirror rn it's called himirror

    • @Mm-vq9zq
      @Mm-vq9zq 6 років тому +1

      Agreed. The smart mirror just feels like it'll be for that person who takes loads of clothes to the changing room just to try them on for Instagram. Having a mirror do that that takes less time than changing clothes yourself with just be surrounded by ppl trying to use it.

    Wow... the fifth technology, is so convenient, at first glace is like getting something for not paying it but today, this makes retail shopping even more awesome.

    I like some of these ideas. The whole purpose of stores is to sell things that customers want to buy and if they're better able to match up buyers and sellers that's good for everyone. -- The problems come when all this extra data collected gets stolen by, or sold to people with more nefarious intents -- we know this can happen because it's already happens. It could even be as simple as some pervo sneaking peeks of undressed people in a fitting room with 'smart mirror'.

    The best idea for the future would be to switch your phone off before going shopping or, better still, leave it at home. Who wants to be bothered with adverts on your phone transmitted by the shop you're already in? Aren't there enough advertisements in shops?

    • @lifelonglearners9784
      @lifelonglearners9784  6 років тому +3

      oh yes, there are advertisements in the shop but why stop there when we could live in a world with advertisements EVERYWHERE 🙄🙄🙄

      I recently went shopping at Meijers in Grand Rapids. I received a cell phone call and spent time pacing the aisle. Security was on me like a hot potato.
      When it was obvious that I wasn’t going to steal they backed off. A bit.
      Turn your cell phones off. Big brother is watching. Boy was George Orwell right.

    • @Iquey
      @Iquey 5 років тому

      We'll still have humans on staff to do stuff robots don't understand. Basically human stuff to correct for human errors or creative chaos caused by either customers or lazy employees. Human contact is also good for teaching older customers how the futuristic experience works, so they aren't startled or confused by the processes and then have negative feelings about the brand or store.

    Beacons are pretty cool... Never heard of them until I seen this video. I can see it being very beneficial but a lot of small businesses will rely on this and like we've been seeing, the standard for customer service will decrease. I can see them helping gamification etc.
    I do think there is a LOT more that can be done with just your regular employees. Yeah, delivering discounts straight to your device is cool but it lacks that human touch that you would only get from a member of staff.

      there is the classic store
      let's call it 1.0
      products almost never change
      the owner chose the products
      it is boring
      now, there must be a new store
      let's call it 2.0
      products always change
      people choose the products there will be via an app
      on the app, there is a huge catalog, people choose the products that will show up in the store.
      the store is constantly being supplied with the products people choose.

    Hi Alex...great video...im experimenting with virtual reality for my e-commerce site..what are your thoughts on VR shopping..?

    • @lifelonglearners9784
      @lifelonglearners9784  6 років тому

      At a general level, successful e-commerce sites reduce barriers to sales. Barriers include the delay between purchasing and receiving the goods and the fear that what you receive is different from your expectations. Any approaches, such as VR shopping, that reduce these barriers have the ability to drive sales.
      Specifically, I have not used VR shopping so while I find the technology exciting my concerned is that it is a gimmick.

    • @kingsofSA
      @kingsofSA 6 років тому

      True...by gimmick you mean shoppers will not want to use it or will not see reason to use it..?

    Consider nos to loose time with bluetooth beacons.... ratio of people with all the requisites are less than 0,5% of your total customers... even if you promote a lot!!!. Al retailers have tested yet... no ongoing projects at all...

  • @janeknox3036
    @janeknox3036 5 років тому

    I’d like to browse in a store then scan the item with my phone to maybe buy later. I want the beacons to help me find things so I don’t have to wander around the store. I want to be rewarded if I am a good customer. i want to be able to get instant feedback to the store through the app. I want to know what song was playing over the speakers, and maybe vote for which song is played next. I want to see where associates are in the store on the map and summon or call them through the app. I want to instantly pay for items from a roving associate and not wait in a long line. All of those ideas don’t involve bugging me. They are about making my life easier.

    I can't understand why everyone in the comments are so scared about emerging technologies?
    With every emerging technology, tons of new job requirements releases! Just have a look at the history of jobs roles and present job roles.
    For an instance, just see the different earning opportunities UA-cam, Google, etc brought for individuals as digital content creators and marketers..
    There is no life without evolution, otherwise we would all have still been in stone age.

      There is a few thoughts around this. Potentially there is a tax paid by businesses based on the level of automation, the higher the automation the higher the tax. The country then has an index based on the % of automation in the economy and based on this index an amount is paid to citizens. My view on the future is this - ua-cam.com/video/fLSBpai9tE0/v-deo.html

    • @ScrewInTheTuna_
      @ScrewInTheTuna_ 6 років тому +6

      The way retail is going, if you think about it, where thousands have lost jobs this year, where are they l going? Where are all the students going to go that graduate for example in head office roles, everything is becoming more expensive, including bills etc. Sorry but automation is the beginning of the end of humanity. Agenda 21 comes in to play for sure and as I have been in the retail industry for the last 12 years I have seen the decline and I have seen good people go. This is not good, we a use online shopping as do I, but in retail more and more stores are using self pay. Even when I call customer services for anything anywhere the staff are trained to discuss using apps or automated services... they fail to realise that promoting these things are actually putting them out of a job eventually. It’s all madness and I see great issues arising further over the coming years.

      Yes, I bet we'll be able to buy them for our homes, so we can actually try on clothes from home, and avoid going to the shop completely. Great for busy people, and people who don't like in-store shopping. Also great for retailers, since they have virtual "personal shopper assistants" who make suggestions (ie: bots), and they can reduce returns dramatically, reducing costs and carbon footprint.

    I'm not a materialistic or big capitalist twat but I'm tired of shoplifters ruining my work experience. We can't do anything about them and they leave dirty old clothes in our store while stealing the new stuff. I want a store that uses facial recognition to deter theft. In the case of grocery stores, facial recognition could be used to ID people who steal necessities like food and diapers to send them coupons and resources to obtain these items cheaply but legally.

    there is the classic store
    let's call it 1.0
    products almost never change
    the owner chose the products
    it is boring
    now, there must be a new store
    let's call it 2.0
    products always change
    people choose the products there will be via an app
    on the app, there is a huge catalog, people choose the products that will show up in the store.
    the store is constantly being supplied with the products people choose.

    There's something wrong underlying all this. De-humanizing so much some processes might actually hurt sales. Plus, people like to talk to people for a solution-based approach to selling. So, as much as this is cool and all, there's no universal applications. Like Nordstrom would stop being Nordstrom if it loses their personal shoppers.

      Technology is really becoming more popular and the more powerful it gets the less humans will rely on others.
