Who do you consider the best athlete of the century? Michael Phelps? Messi? Michael Jordan? Kobe? Tiger Woods? Usain Bolt? Tom Brady?
Well both the wide world of sports and congress consider Jim Thorpe the athlete of the century. Jim Thorpe is the best athlete you've never heard of.
President Dwight Elsenhower said “Here and there, there are some people who are supremely endowed. My memory goes back to Jim Thorpe. He never practiced in his life, and he could do anything better than any other football player I ever saw"
Thorpe was awarded All American honors in both 1911 and 1912. He excelled in a number of sports including:
o Basketball
o Lacrosse
o Baseball
o Golf
o Swimming
o Billiards
o Rowing
o Hockey
o Boxing
He won 2 gold medals in the 1912 Olympics. He was:
• Voted America’s Greatest All-Around Male Athlete
• Chosen as greatest football player of the half century in 1950 by an Associated Press poll of sports writers
• Named Greatest American Football Player in history in a 1977 national poll conducted by sports Magazine
• Inducted into:
o The Pennsylvania and Oklahoma Halls of Fame
o The National Indian Hall of Fame
o The National Track and Field Hall of Fame
o The Professional Football Hall of Fame
o The Helms Professional Football Hall of Fame
• ABC's "Wide World of Sports" named him its Athlete of the Century, one of several groups to honor Thorpe alongside other athletic greats at the turn of the century.

Jim Thorpe was a modest man and had a heart of gold.
Thorpe won the dec. by 800 points the greatest margin of victory ever. When his awards were taken after the Olympics the men coming in second refused to take them.
The GOAT no matter what competition. He could do it all.
Should get more Credit for helping college football and nfl being what it is today... he played professional football at a time you still needed a job and football was more dangerous than today...
i am UM fan , and inkow every year they have a jim thorple award for the player that is the best player on the entire team. and usually someone that does morethen 1 thing. mulitple things
😂😂😂 Tom Bradley
he's mad, bro
+Peter Manson yep - pretty amazing guy
LMAO not even close.
SEAHAWKS12 he forsure looked up most famous nfl player and forgot his name while making this vid
Most protected cheating cry baby qb. tuck rule, deflate gate. spy gate EAGLES philly special nick foles lol
Pro baseball, basketball, and football. By far the best athlete ever.
Yup, no athlete ever came close to Jim's accomplishments! He also was a boxer, Hockey, lacrosse player and a swimmer along with competing in the Olympics where he won two gold medals and was dubbed by the King of Sweden as the Greatest Athlete in the World!
the man who made legends.
"Tom Bradley?!?" Apparently, his name has been forgotten already!
He should be considered the greatest football player ever. He is to me the greatest athlete that ever lived & should never be debated.
Should never be debated? Cmon now, Bo Jackson has something to say.
@@BigBudduh What did Bo ever win? Bo will never be in any Hall of Fame. Jim Thorpe was considered one of the greatest football players ever & track athletes ever. Also played baseball in the Majors. Bo Jackson ave per year in baseball .250 average 17 hr's per year 51 rbi's per year. So fast he only averaged 10 stolen basses per year at a 71% success rate. He averaged striking out every 2.85 ab's. Made 1 all star game in 8 years. NFL stats ave. 695 yards per year rushing only 88 yards per year receiving. Only ave. 4 TD's per year. Cracks me up everytime people say how great a RB he was. He was fast & strong. So what!!! I would put Dionne Sanders over Bo he had a much better baseball career & a Hall of fame Football career. Jim Thorpe is no question the greatest athlete that ever lived & he never practiced for anything.
BBBYpsi Not talking about accomplishments or careers homie, we’re talking greatest athlete, and you said there is no debate. Cmon now, you said yourself “he was fast and strong”; yup that’s kind of the point.
@@BigBudduh that's right there is no debate Jim Thorpe was the greatest athlete of his time and it wasn't even close there are other people that were considered close to Bo Jackson is being athletes. Besides that accomplishing stuff in athletics is tired of being a great athlete of course there are plenty of people who have complex nothing that you can say are great athletes but not really if they didn't accomplish anything
BBBYpsi Dawg your English is horrendous, I don’t know what you even trying to say lmfaooo
The greatest athlete in history, you will never see someone like him
Wilt Chamberlain
well u have to realize that there is almost no footage of Jim Thorpe which is why he is so un heard of today. The athletes of today live in the age of the internet and everything the do is recorded on video. So no, legendary athletes of today will most likely still will be well known a hundred years from today
Perhaps, time will tell. With so many professional sports I suspect most, if not all, will be forgotten but it will take sometime. Probably 2 generations, no more.
2 generations are only around 50 years tho
AKhan I doubt that. Because so many of them are druggies and criminals. Time will reveal this more and more. Plus most aren't gentlemen or patriots.
No, they do have some footage... He is Native American, which is most of the cause of him not being known and the scandal of his medals.
@@mwmann Did you really just say 'Patriots'? That's hilarious. Why should patriotism be expected of professional athletes , if that's what you're suggesting?
Hey... this dude is my great uncle
thx fr sharing =3
Dude really said Tom Bradley 🤦🏼♂️
Who hasn’t heard of the greatest athlete in history
Good video!
Drunk History brought me here
I know who he is only cause his body is buried not too far from where I grew up and our high school rivals were the Jim Thorpe Olympians
The Real GOAT
On Friday July 15th 2022 Jim Thorpe has been reinstated as the sole winner of the 1912 Olympic pentathlon and decathlon in Stockholm - nearly 110 years after being stripped of those gold medals for "violations" of amateurism rules.
This game a perfect
Thorpe was, and remains, the best ever. Period.
Tom Bradley 😅😂😂🤣
Tom Bradley & Bill Beliuchi
i'm sorry...who exactly hasn't heard of the Great Jim Thorpe
It’s that Native American gene
Yeah, they tend to have a lot of stamina and natural high upper body strength. Explains why many mestizo laborers from Mexico last so long.
Nah it's the white Gene's that make him such a great athlete and winner.
@@theterrar3566 that's racist
@@chicken-ne6ou So I'm racist but the upper posts arent? Wow.. just wow.
He was just a natural born athlete and the greatest one!
Ah yes Tom Bradley
Nice video I liked it
Thanks Ashraf
thankyouk this is a wonderful video that is well thought out but sussinct enough to reallygo over what made him amazing. btw. in football, ithought i also read that had even thrown touch downs as well to score points on top of everything listed.
and that 1500 meter or 1 mile run in the decathalon. someone actaully stole his shoes and he found some in a garbage can wher one shoe was too small one was too large. if he wore his normal shoes he probably would have scored even higher than his point total. and i believe it took 40-50 years before anyone really ever effectively broke that record. 20 before anyone tied or "slightly" beat it.
but i am thinking that if his shoes were not stolen his point total would have been that it would take 50 years.
oh plus i heard he did't ever playe 3 of the sports of the deathalon or pentathanlon and learned them just befor ethe olympics
i wonder though, had they not taken his medals away and banned him. i am guessing he would have been in the 1916 and 1920 and who knows, maybe 1924 olypic games too getting many more gold medals.
and in 1912 , not only did wint the 15 events betewen the 2 multi sport events, but he actaully also placed 4th in the individual high jump and i think 10th in the individual long jump or something like that.
and his time for the 100 yard/100meer dash. in those days. would have almost qualified him for olympics today. however, he barely parctied, and also he would also have modern clohtes, shoes, training, nutritian etc.. so yes he would have made the olympics today. smae with theother sports.
the 2nd best atheltte ever in terms of diversity after iim has to be wilt chamberlain but jim is clearly the best period.
Amen🇺🇸
So Jim was about 24 before the extent of his talent became visible to the country. I wonder what could have done to find his talent earlier? The NFL seems to like; vertical leap, 60m, bench & squat for a baseline. Probably just vertical leap for a single test. So maybe a vertical jump & a 1km run? But his track & field coach didn't realise what else he could do. How to test for his incredible skill? If there was a standardised test for it, people would practice for it, then you don't know if it's raw skill or polished. He could have been the greatest olympian of all time. But I think his passion was football, & if he was born in a later time he would have been discovered in high school.
Tom Bradly!?😂😂😂
The first president of the NFL and one of the greatest players to play the game and yet the Washington Redskins had the audacity to maintain their disrespect. It's fitting that you don't have a name or a mascot. You don't deserve one.
Yep
Maybe where you’re from (Australia?) you’ve never heard of him. Most everyone in the USA who is a sports fan has.

Why call him Native American. Which nation did he belong to? North America is much larger than Europe. National ties mean just as much in both cultures. North America was just as divided by native nations, as the rest of the world is.
He was Sac and Fox and Potawatomi tribe
Dumb title, anybody that follows sports knows who Jim Thorpe was.
I suspect you have a much deeper knowledge of sports than the average person. The vast majority of people don't seem to know/remember him.
James H He’s not as well known by casual fans I guess.
WHO?
How many black people did Jim compete against?....I thought so.
He isn't recognized because he was a simple good native American Man from Oklahoma. Had he been born in New York, Washington DC, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, or Los Angeles you'd hear about him constantly. The Truth is the majority of all the great athletes, gentlemen, and Patriots were all originally from the south, Oklahoma, and Texas.
fucking dumb.... lol
