It’s 9.11kg in a size M/L without pedals from Merida website. I have the Van Rysel EDR 105.
On the NZ site it's listed as 8.78kg. I have the 4000 disc and it's listed as 8.46kg which seems close to mine (XL and weighed on my bathroom scales mind...)
AVE bought the scultra and love it and so glad a saw your site after this and saw the good write up you gave it . My two of the four I have are Merida and can't fault them great site keep up the good work 😉
I was actually considering buying the scultura 400, and I noticed on their Australian website that it was listed as lighter than the carbon 4000 version which seemed suspicious.
So I sent a message to merida Australia and they came back with the following:
"The rim 400 weighs 8.86kg, Rim 4000 is 8.19kg and Disc 4000 is 8.46kg"
This is for the M/L sizes.

A cool follow up will be the new 105 when that’s announced. I was pondering there new Ultegra but with so many other demands I can’t justify the price. Fingers crossed I can upgrade my 5800 105

Me too my Merida Silex is a fantastic bike and a paid £1200 worth every penny 3000 miles since July last year about 500 on my Merida skultra
I have a 1990 ish Falcon with 531c tubing that I had built up from the frame with nothing else and chose the 105 for the groupset. It rides like a dream.
Thanks for the explanation about how you get the pics of the bikes sorted, it's absolutely incredible. You must really sink some time into this.

Maybe something worth mentionning about the Triban RC520 is its versatility : you can put gravel tires up to 36 mm wide. It will never be a weapon like the Canyon Ultimate, but can be a very good swiss knife... ;)

Well done again , Keep her lit ...and go further down that rabbit hole , Cube, Felt, Focus & Orbea , I agree with the recommendation for the Winspace wheels, that 105 Canyon ultimate matched with the winspace wheels would be a real SL7 pusher ...so which out of the box 105 bike has the best wheels ..probably the Canyon or the Vitus ?...keep up the great work ...you will be rewarded 👍🏽👍🏽
I’ve just got an orro Venturi stc 2021.
I know it’s not 105. But to give you an idea of weight. I’ve got mechanical ultegra and disk brakes , fulcrum 400 wheels , Hutchinson fusion tubeless tyres 28mm Came in at 8.2 kg. I love it 👍🚴♀️👍🚴♀️. £2780 with the tubeless tyres

I was all set on getting a Merida after seeing this but as others have said things didn' t add up so I emailed them. Their response is below and although they didn't say the the 400 is wrong it does say the carbon framed version is 430 grams lighter. However with identical wheels etc on their website it is listed as heavier, so the 400 rim weight must be wrong.

Then you have the wheel setup. Levers, brake callipers, hoses, fluid and rotors weigh more than an equivalent rim brake options. Disc brake hubs are heavier too, and disc brake wheels are often built up with more spokes of a wider gauge, although the lack of a brake track means that disc-specific rims are generally lighter. The thru axles that are used are heavier than quick release skewers.
A true reflection of where the differences are would be to check the individual components.

Recently bought a Dolan L'Etape SL - 105 - Carbon. It was £1299 at the time of purchase but now £1399, I honestly think this bike deserves a shout (looks alot better in person too), rides really smooth and you can customize your parts on the site. Changed the stem/handlebar, wheels and tires and it still 'only' equated to £1504 approx... shame I cant find the weight info nor have a tool for it
I have tried the Polygon S7 Rim Brakes before, it's about 8.6-8.7kg on the Indonesian official website. The actual bike itself doesn't have the handlebars angled that way, they're a company that started out with mountain bikes so road bikes are new to them. I liked the bike in terms of looks but I guess it was too big for me despite me selecting the correct size for my height and inseam
I got myself a Radon Vaillant at the beginning of 2020. If you look for an aero 105 equipped bike with German customer support it is a great deal. However, the really push the price down on these. They use a mediocre FSA headset and Fulcrum wheels (not bad but also not good). They use the K03S resin pads instead of the 105 pads with the fins and the really cheap SM-RT54 rotors (10 € each) which work only ok. The bottom bracket is the bottom of the line SM-BB71-41B which I would call Tiagra-level. The tyres are Continental Grand Sport which are still good after almost 6000 km, so these get a pass. But the main highlight of the bike are the front and rear derailleur which are Ultegra (just for the vaillant, the spire uses 105). For me this was a great deal, because I consider most parts listed above consumables which you can easily upgrade along the line. And the bike also is a great ride.

I'm glad that Merida bikes got what they deserve . Usually they are underrated because they dont sell in USA (they own 49% in Specialized) . I have a Scultura 400 disc 2019 , super bike at super price.
Great addition to the original video. However I do want to point out that the weight of the Scultura 400 rim could probably be false, as the Scultura 300 rim is 9.18kg with tiagra, I think its a stretch that scultura could have shaved almost a kilo off from their tiagra models. Also I think the cheapest bike with full integration with 105 comes in at 2000pounds which is the Orbea Orca OMR M30. I also think the Specialized Allez Elite deserves a mention with a price tag of 1050pounds weighing in at 8.78kg
where did you find the weight of the Allez?
Bit of a mine field this - there is no Scultura 300 on the UK website!
@@bikotic Allez Elite weight is actually 8.76kg from GC Performance on youtube. the Scultura 400 Rim (2020) listed at 9.11kg, whereas the 2019 model is 8.78kg, Scultura 400 disk for 2021 is shown as 8.98kg, truly a minefield.

I'm considering going road bike for the first time (currently hybrid). You present lots of good options. Just a shame it seems my main issue is not the money, it's the supply and availability of those bikes (Canada, Quebec). Wish I'd get that Canyon AL 7, but it's not in supply. I may have to settle on Van Rysel EDR AF 105 instead.
Winspace wheels are almost at the same price as Hunt at the end (did you check prices with your local dealer? did you add taxes?)

I borrowed a Van rysel when I was re building my wheels ( cervelo C3) and have to say great bike decent road road bike well equipped, but I think there is still so much label snobbery in the bike world they could make a fully carbon Di2 sell it for £2,000 and some would still turn their noses up !
canyon is cheaper than van rysel.... and van rysel edr has a 28mm max tyre clearance, which sucks on an endurance bike
There's also Sensa Romagna 8,9kg 999Euro and Sensa Aquila 8Kg 1700Euro

Look for this Taiwanese brand of bikes called Gusto - I believe they will feature quite high in your future Ultegra list

Just bought the Merida Speeder 400, Similar to the Scultura but with flat bars.
Radon ist really a nice bike brand. I bought mine in 2014 and im still happy with it. Fullcarbon with Ultegra for 1800 €, have seen it even cheaper for 1600 € later in the year. I also found a nice Deal for my father: A betwin with Ultegra on Mavic wheels for 1000 € on Decathlon.

Nothing wrong with Orro bikes. Don’t be a bike snob. Had my Orro gravel Terra C for a year with no issues. Designed and assembled in the UK by people that have been in the bike trade for over 30 years. And they ride so nicely on our crap roads, as they have been designed for the UK
I'm a very discerning on my bikes and I really like the look of them, and being spec'd for the uk makes me even more convinced.

Scultura 400 doesnt wight 8.18 It weighs closer to 8.8 kgs. Somewhere like the Allez Elite. The lightest 105 bike is the caad12 (phased out). It came at 8.2 kgs. For reference the Scultura 300 or Tiagra weighs 9.1 kgs. So how can a 105 bike over the Tiagra with same frame be 1 kg lighter? I know its so listed on Merida website but its not true at all.. Not even close.

polygon is a bike manufacturer from Indonesia and i am Indonesian
They used to make a alot of roadbike a while ago with very wide range of bikes from budget to super Aero TT but since about 2017-2018 they kinda stopped making them, probably due to very low sells. The helios roadbike was very popular
Their MTB sales in the other hand is very stable and still have same wide range of products, and they have like a cutting edge RnD, not not very much for their road bikes

I think the Halford's chain in the UK sells many Insera Sena bikes (Polygon/Marin) under its various brands; Boardman, Carrera and Voodoo plus Go Outdoors has bikes like the Calibre Bossnut made by them. I thought the road bikes were also coming from Indonesia but not sure maybe its just the mountain bikes. They seem good for the money and Halfords do some very competitive pricing here in the UK for their bikes compared to the big international brands.

@@normen416 I think Polygon as a brand is fairly minor in the UK but still sold, Marin the brand that Insera Sena bought is fairly common but Insera Sena manufactured bikes are hugely successful under the Halfords brands as Halfords sell about 1.3 million bikes a year in the UK and have up to about 40% of the market by volume and around 25-30% of the bike market by value. I would say the Carrera, Voodoo and Boardman mountain bikes are mainlly made in Indonesia at the moment which means Insera Sena. Unsure about the road bikes. I remember reading that the low cost Carrera carbon fibre road bike was made in Taiwan and I think the Virtuoso at one point was coming from Cambodia. There is a new Carrera Virtuoso now that looks radically different featuring disc brakes and an aluminium fork that could be Insera Sena.
Insera Sena has also made Kona and Scott bikes and I'm sure many other brands.

I think Insera Sena are now in the top 5 of bicycle manufacturers in the world or maybe that is top 5 of mountain bike manufacturers.
I think the main issue is your use of weight as a marker for value ... But that's a very minor thing ... Much more important are things like aero, comfort, versatility, ride quality ... Who cares about the cheapest for weight when the other bike is more comfortable, more aero, maintains value better in second hand marker, has better wheels, et
Of course I agree with you oik01 - but just getting accurate weights of a bike is ridiculously more difficult than it should be, let alone unquantifiable variables like aero, comfort, versatility and ride quality - if you try and use those markers you will be back at square one very quickly. Try it, see how you get on. Value is just a starting point - for example I would never buy a bike I didn't like the look of, no matter how cheap, light, comfortable or aero.

How on eart the bike for 2021 is almost 1 kg lighter the the bike from 2020 when the 2021 bike have the same parts like the same model bike from 2020?
And Scultura 4000 rim (basiclly the carbon version of Scultura 400 rim) weights 8.16 kg in size M/L w/o pedals ?
So the cheaper and aluminium bike is lighter then more expensive carbon model of the same bike ?

Swap out the seatpost and saddle on the Merida for carbon ones off Aliexpress and the weight will then be less than the Van Rysel Ultra CFand you'll still be over 400 quid better off.

Got an 105 on Full Carbon Frame with Vision Wheels at 1175 € at clearance preis with 8.9 kilo.
Not sure why he ignores Planet X they are a huge seller in the UK I think second only to Brompton in size with regard supplying bikes and also Ribble do some nice bikes too. I'd probably be looking at Planet X and Ribble before many of the brands mentioned here but I guess its personal preference.

Think it's ridiculous that disc brakes are forced on riders. I build my road bike from frame n fork. Looks like i will not be purchasing complete bikes here on out.
coming from a mtn bike background I find disc brakes insanely good and need far less adjusting/maintenance. If I'm in poor conditions or gravel bike terrain combined with some down inclines then discs are what I would want, and safer on the road too.
If you're a strict road & race/time rider then I guess you wouldn't want them, but that's not me. Amazing how we lose sleep over tiny things though!

And now, the Radon Spire is well more than 2k, after record sales last year, bike manufacturers have become even more greedy bastards.
Sadly all of the 105 bikes £1000 and under bike have had there prices increased by around £2-300.
It might not be but that bike looks like a cheap chinese carbon complete bike ive seen on Ebay called R8000 by a company called Airwolf.
