    Just came across your channel watched the 3 lochs and now this one. Must say, very nice. Well done on your whw the enthusiasm really showed. I luv this trail been out on it a few times. Stayed in accommodation for one trip, wild camped another trip and cycled a third. I can't get enough of videos like these. My fav place out the whole of it is kinlochleven. I would advise everyone to find time to follow the pipes up to blackwater reservoir. You can walk on them (totally flat concrete) as soon as the devil's staircase meets the road down to the village. The dam is breathtaking as is the beach. Out on the 3 lochs in two days. Perfect timing to catch your videos. Cheers,

      Thanks Garry. I'm the process of planning hikes for this year, so more.content will arrive from April onwards. I believe The Three Lochs Way is finally being upgraded to improve the bridges and paths so hopefully the middle section is a bit more negotiable now. Have a great time!

    I've done it as well couple of years ago and I need to say, I shed some tears watching your video and remembering those amazing views and emotions. WHW leaves imprint on a heart. I will be back there soon :)

      Thanks Anna. I think Kingshouse (Day 4 for me) is easily the most scenic part of the trip and having wild deer roaming around was the perfect moment.

      HikeBeginsAtForty oh yes. When we were doing it, the hotel was closed for renovation so we did not see any deer but I stayed there last year on a way to Skye and saw the whole family of them. I think the staff from the hotel named a male one Joey:) In terms of WHW I also love the path after Tyndrum with hills on one side and river on another ♥️

    Great video. I agree with Chris, 6 or 7 days is better as it gives you the time to properly appreciate the beauty around you. It also gives you the opportunity to relax and reflect on the day before heading for bed. Subbed and looking forward to your future adventures together :-)

    What an amazing adventure, Ian! and what an achievement! That second day was RIDICULOUS, I would have been dead the next day. But you guys just pummeled through the next days like no one's business. Haha! Total bad asses for sure! Your footage really gave the beauty of the WHW justice btw - it's so crisp and gorgeous! It's giving me a serious bout of trail-envy. How I wish I were in that kind of landscape right now. I want to fast forward the future to the time when I could do this too. Thank you for the inspiration! By far, my favourite film of yours to date, for sure. Cannot wait to see your upcoming adventures now. You'll only get better from here! Again, congratulations Ian! I'm a fan!

    I did in 7 days when I 60 (my very first walk) and a few years later I did it again in 5. Your video brought it all back to me, the easy bits AND the tough bits. I walked with you every step of the way, thanks a million mate!

    I did the WHW in 2018, taking 7 days to complete. I stopped at the campsite at Dryman, stopped at the bothy at Rowardennan and then stayed at the campsite of Beinglass campsite. Stopped at Tyndrum and wild camped at the Kingshead, campsite at Kimlochleven and then Fort William.

    • @TheHikeBegins
      @TheHikeBegins  3 роки тому

      That is a good way to do it. Unfortunately our bags were sent onto Beinglas, so we didn't have anything we needed for a spontaneous overnight stop, so we had to push on. Lesson learned though!

    Such an amazing adventure. It brings back so many memories ... good and bad. We walked the WHW in June 2019 over 9 days. You did such a great job. Walking along the shore of Loch Lomond in one day. Well done. The landscape is so beautiful and the views are fantastic. I need to go back one day.

    WHW... in five days... Damn. I needed at least seven both times. XD (But I did have a 17kg backpack -including food and water- to lug around ;P )
    Great video, Ian! Beautiful views. Definitely made me want to go back and get rained on in Scotland. ;)

    • @TheHikeBegins
      @TheHikeBegins  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Leonie. Yeah, I think we would have struggled to achieve 5 days with full backpacks. I just removed the tent from mine in the end and kept everything else as I really wanted to train with a heavier backpack over long distances.

    Just finished watching your West Highland Way adventure - congrats! I've done it over 6 days and it's very comfortable compromise between challenge and enjoyment. Also - I had shorter daylight period.
    But I very excited about your future trips - Slovakia sound very intriguing and with TMB is also on my "to do" list. Looking forward to that.
    I allowed myself to advertise your channel on my Tweeter - hope it helps a bit to grow.
    Take care, Seb

      Hi Seb. Thanks for your comments. I actually should have been in Slovakia right now, however this trip was cancelled due to travel restrictions. I'm hoping to be able to sandwich it in between Everest Base Camp and the TMB next year. Assuming those trips aren't also jeopardized!

    I and friends walked the west highland way many many moons ago, On our walk from Balmaha to Inversnaid was the worst part ,specially from Rowardennan to Inversnaid, part of that walk consisted of crossing a 6 yard gap, with a drop of 12ft to the loch, to get across the gap there were two chains attached to the side of a rock face, you put your feet on the bottom chain and your hands on the other and shimmied across, with a full back pack on it was pretty scary. I presume those chains are long gone now and a bridge has replaced them. The time I reached Inversnaid it was night fall and thought of quitting. I'm glad I didn't tho. It was a great experience.

    • @TheHikeBegins
      @TheHikeBegins  4 роки тому +1

      There weren't any chains, which I'm glad about based on your experience, but we definitely had to shimmy a few times to negotiate obstacles. We had quite a few fallen trees.

    • @bowie12
      @bowie12 4 роки тому

      @@TheHikeBegins Yep scrambling over boulders and fallen trees was part of the course, on that part of the route, I had to take my back pack off and toss it over some the obstacles. Now as I'm getting on a bit, I take the bus to Bridge of Orchy and walk to Glencoe Mountain resort. A wee day hike I do every now and again..

    Wow! What a journey, congratulations! My mum and I started out on the 31st September but we did it over 7 days as my first attempt in 2018 was over 5 days and I knew how hard that was! You did an amazing job coping mentally and physically with that 2nd day and such a shame as you missed out big time with social hours at Beinglas ;) What is your next adventure?

    • @TheHikeBegins
      @TheHikeBegins  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Roz, yes the 2nd day was mentally very taxing, but we were proud to have achieved 31 miles in a single day. Wouldn't recommend that to anyone though. I was due to be hiking/filming in the Tatras Mountains in Slovakia in a few weeks, but I suspect that will not happen in light of the 2nd wave of the pandemic kicking in. Fingers crossed!

  • @TheConnor67
    @TheConnor67 3 роки тому

    Just watched your video great watch but I think you’ll find the difference between high road and low road after rowerdennan is barely a mile and from where you camped on first night would not make it a 31ml day more in the region of 26ml

    • @TheHikeBegins
      @TheHikeBegins  3 роки тому

      Hi Kevin, thanks for your comment. Yes, it's around 26 miles, but it was a 31 mile day for us. Our bag drop for the transfer was just on the edge of Balmaha in the opposite direction so we had to double back once we hit the village. Then we spent time getting supplies etc. I'd mentioned later on In the film that the mileage I was relaying included off trail activities. In total we clocked up about 113 miles over the 5 days.

    Hi, some people say it's good to skip the first sections because there are not as beautiful as the rest of the trail, do you think so ?

    • @TheHikeBegins
      @TheHikeBegins  3 роки тому +1

      Hi, no I disagree. You would miss amazing views of Loch Lomond and the walk over Conic Hill. Each section has it's own beauty. I would always want to do a complete trail rather than skip a section, but it's personal preference of course. I will be walking The Great Glen Way in August and I'm told that the last section is very boring and there isn't much to see, but I will still walk that part. I will probably just film less that day

    I'm sorry. What's an honesty box?

    • @TheHikeBegins
      @TheHikeBegins  3 роки тому

      Honesty boxes are containers of food and water usually left on the trail or outside a house nearby. Each item will normally have a price. These are left unattended so the honesty comes down to whether the person actually pays for the item.
