LoL. I've owned 2 jags... a 97 VDP british racing green; and now an '04 Xj8 which I just love. What the reviewer fails to admit, or even acknowledge is that these cars are not "boy racer" vehicles... you enjoy the trip much more and don't care how fast you're getting there because the car is such a nice place to be. The overall comfort level of a jag compared to a BMW is like comparing a rolls royce to a Volkswagen.
Should have realised when I saw "5th Gear" it was going to bag it out; the whole 5th Gear team hates anything that isn't German... And about old people and Jags, what a load of crap! I'm only seventeen and Jags are my favourite cars hands down.
@Not a Russian Boi Don't get me wrong I like the XJ but I've heard there are specifically XJ specialists who deal with those cars, maybe the older models...
No need to look older to love this car! I'm 25 yrs old and loveeee this car and thinking of getting this! If you aren't a TRUE Fans of JAGGGGGGS they you will never understand these cars :)
Having just scrolled down the comments on this clip,i'm glad that everyone seems to be of the same opinion.A:the reviewer is a turd and B:the XJR is bloody lovely
Plato is a prick. I've got a '95 XJR and it's bloody brilliant. I drove one of the XJRs he's testing above when they were new and it was a lot better than my old X300 one. The XJR isn't an M5 - because it doesn't have to be. It'll keep up with one and be a lot comfier whilst doing so.
I own a 1987 Jaguar Xj6 Sovereign. The steering wheel just shakes a bit its a jag thing. its not really shaking its more you can feel the engine through the steering wheel. There AMAZING cars and i love them (:
Ian Townsend Why do you dream about it? I bought my XJR 2004 60k miles great condition for $14,900, cheaper then a new compact car. The older X308 versions are under 10k in good condition.
Scuttle shake? Limited to 150 mph? Doesn't handle? Is he part of the German propaganda machine? These will slaughter M5s, Audi RSs, and AMGs, even though Jaguar claimed less power, and they've now been around for more than ten years.Take a look at independent tests, not copy paste rubbish.
@minibus1351 Amen to that. I've owned four Jags - I still have two of them (JaguarSport XJR-S V12, and an X300 XJ6); I've driven XKR, XJR; BMW 740, 850, 528, Merc C180, 220................none of them come near an XJR.
@minibus1351 The "dimwitted idiot" is a profession racing car driver Jason Plato, also a Touring Car champion in 2001. I'd take his opinion seriously. Back then I would've bought a E class over the Jag but the new XF is definitely a class leader.
@FastCarPete I've got an x-type. Handles completely different than the toyotas and hondas i've owned. It is firm, subtle, taut but not bone-jarringly annoying like hondas and is comfortable for long distance cruises like the toyota. How they managed to build a suspension that behaves in such a manner.... I was befuddled. My next car? the 400 hp XJR. I dont like the new XJ but love the Bertone design based on the classic look. Really is closest thing to being alive...
We are all in agreement... its the best and screw the rest. I mean it wins on looks alone. XJR. Extra joyeous ride. Most beautiful beast on the road. Luv my Jag
I'm buying one of these :) I've had s class and 7 series from the same era so will be good to see how it compares. I had an E66 760Li handled amazingly for being such a tank. I never had the AMG model of the merc tho :( But yeh next up is the Jaguar XJ Supercharger!!
your leaving out the reliability factor in the 460, those are just about the only top end cars that are not grenades, as well as the gs450h and the ls600h, but h's are on a whole diffrent level.
This and the old Maserati Quattroporte are the most beautiful cars in the world. But I would definetly take this over a Maserati. And of course a Ranhe Rover Autobiography.
That's not as bad as the part where he says 'I'm a racing driver in my 30s...' he was a few months away from 40 when this was aired. It says it all that he drives a 911 turbo with the number plate 'P1ATO'
the other thing i hate is reviewers harping on about the specifications and equipment. why are you spending half the time telling me stuff i could look up in the online brochure. i want to know what the essence of the car is about, how it fits in with it's competitors, why i should/n't buy this car, why fans love and why others would go with a merc or a bmw, it's reliability.....
The host is so mean, this car is awesome!!! I own a 2003 S-type r and the car is fantastic I race race Bimmers and Mercs all the . I win most of the time
@tommyb2b1 it,s sad you had a bad experience with a jag, but, there was obviously issues with it prior to you buying it, any car can crap out if the owner mistreats it, it,s mechanical after all, you just bought a lemon, better luck for future buys,--- a sloth in the twisties ? as i said, buy a sports car, people don't buy luxury autos to race or thrash them, well, normal people don't anyway, kia ora.
Plastic engine tensioners? Always break and drop the timing chain, very expensive repair and you need a good machine shop to straighten the eight valves! terriblely made ie;98-2001 this year is no better?
I don't get it. All you people going on about how he's an idiot and so on. He's expecting a sporty drive because it's a sports model. The fact that certain other brands manage that with a good normal ride quality too is why he says there are better options. I'll wager that most of you lot shouting him down haven't even tried them next to the opposition yet you're all rubbishing his opinion like you're the next gods of road testing. It's an honest review which I can vouch for having tried them.
Maybe the facelift wasn't so bad 'cause at least it now looks different from the previous model. But still, the American styling sucked. It made the car less elegant.
Fair comment mate. It does feel american- and this edge has taken the car away from its origins- these origins are where the car had its genuine sophistication and classic looks- this current model is far away from that.
might I as what a mondeo is??? lol. Never heard of it. Must be some weird small ass tiny car that is sent over to europe cause their roads are to small for a real vehicle like a Navigator, Yukon denali, etc.
haha- whats left of this car is as far away from the original as can be. That turd on the roof is just folly and the huge arches serve in holding back the sleek classic look of the original which was by all means a very nice car. Have any of you "chaps" ever driven one of these before? Maybe your that good, you can comment without doing so?
u like jag but do not insult those who prefer benz or bmw. it is very naive and biased of u. i love jaguars but i just have to say that this car looks Sooooo.......ooo inferior to the s-class and the 7-series.
i agree with you sodoffb. 5th gear are hot on gimmicks but fail in the substance department. at the end he talks about scuttle shake. is he having laugh?! scuttle shake on a bonded aluminium space-frame saloon???!!! does he even know what that term means? complete numpties.
Fifth gear is stupid. This is a car for anyone who wants a large fast car that isn't german. You can now pick up one of these for £7000 - £8000 (the price of a new fiesta), I know which I'd rather have, as long as I can fuel it.
This is why Fifth gear was shite 😂 hes gone into it as if hes reviewing a skyline GTR or something 🤦, the last propper Jag was awesome at what it was designed to do, and the X350/358 still has more presence than any moderner jag thats came since.
Nasty review. These days wild horses wouldn't get me to buy anything German. You don't buy a Jaguar to be perfect. You buy one for the looks and a little bit of Britishness.
Yes mate.. Sluggish and tiresome.. Have you driven one? Its a Plastic suited, slightly funked up version of the old classic. A terrible car by any standard- if you had that much money and bought this rather than "any" other same priced car i would think you may need a little word.
Jag xj has more class than any of its German rivals. Real man's car
X358 XJR is my favourite old-school car. The car has no scuttle shake, not sure what Plato is talking about. This car is supreme cool Britsh luxury ❤
Should have realised when I saw "5th Gear" it was going to bag it out; the whole 5th Gear team hates anything that isn't German... And about old people and Jags, what a load of crap! I'm only seventeen and Jags are my favourite cars hands down.
I have an XJR Portfolio and before that I had a Mustang GT! The X350 Jaguar XJR is the best car all round I have ever owned!
isn't the xj unreliable?
@Not a Russian Boi Don't get me wrong I like the XJ but I've heard there are specifically XJ specialists who deal with those cars, maybe the older models...
No need to look older to love this car! I'm 25 yrs old and loveeee this car and thinking of getting this! If you aren't a TRUE Fans of JAGGGGGGS they you will never understand these cars :)
Having just scrolled down the comments on this clip,i'm glad that everyone seems to be of the same opinion.A:the reviewer is a turd and B:the XJR is bloody lovely
I bought my first Jag at 25. I have owned over 20. I presently have a XJR (all black) and a XK8 (all black). I would loooove to own a F-type though
I have a superb black x300 XJR. LOVE EM
Better Jag year for the xjr 03 or 04
Plato is a prick.
The XJ is the only car I’ve managed to wheel spin in the dry and got out of at the other end feeling very refreshed and comfortable.
This is so cool... I love Jaguar! They will always be a top-notch class of their own.
Plato has always been a bellend. This is the last true Jaguar XJ. All new Jaguars are abominations.
Thomas Williams actually the x308 was the last true Jaguar XJ, this was made by Ford not jaguar, but I love the x350 got one and it's great 😊
I agree the next gen XJ was just ugly imho and lacking all of the elegance of the true XJ lineage
Shot on location in an afternoon around Oxford. Not at all laboured and no loss.
The older x308 is the one to have. I drive one at 31, so it doesn't have to be an old mans car.
I own a 1987 Jaguar Xj6 Sovereign. The steering wheel just shakes a bit its a jag thing. its not really shaking its more you can feel the engine through the steering wheel. There AMAZING cars and i love them (:
I'm on my fourth (used) XJ, this time an 'R'. It's like driving in Grand Theft Auto, just press the gas, point it an you're there.
I still dream about owning a XJR, love the one they did top gear back in 2003, a full jag episode, series 3 episode 2 I believe
Ian Townsend Why do you dream about it? I bought my XJR 2004 60k miles great condition for $14,900, cheaper then a new compact car. The older X308 versions are under 10k in good condition.

I think he's based off the Major in Fawlty Towers.
@minibus1351 Amen to that. I've owned four Jags - I still have two of them (JaguarSport XJR-S V12, and an X300 XJ6); I've driven XKR, XJR; BMW 740, 850, 528, Merc C180, 220................none of them come near an XJR.
A jaguar is a jaguar, not a corvette
@minibus1351 The "dimwitted idiot" is a profession racing car driver Jason Plato, also a Touring Car champion in 2001. I'd take his opinion seriously. Back then I would've bought a E class over the Jag but the new XF is definitely a class leader.
It’s such an amazing car, I can’t wait to buy one 😀
Yes there is, there are 2 S Types, the current one (which I call new) and the older one which was like 1960 something :)

We are all in agreement... its the best and screw the rest. I mean it wins on looks alone. XJR. Extra joyeous ride. Most beautiful beast on the road. Luv my Jag
Ive got an old XJ6, im going to get an XJR, sooner or later.
I'm buying one of these :) I've had s class and 7 series from the same era so will be good to see how it compares. I had an E66 760Li handled amazingly for being such a tank. I never had the AMG model of the merc tho :( But yeh next up is the Jaguar XJ Supercharger!!
And what is the outcome?
LOL mate is not alone...I'm in my lower 30s and I own a jag
Still being sold here, but only as 3.0V6 so hence it's still active :)
@george385 glad there's someone who thinks like I do, and those are some nice cars you have!
@MrPoooopro The XJR will piss the lexus and you know it.
I just got my self a used 2004 xj8 and I'm really surprised how well the car was built, strong materials Compare a 2004 xj to a 2004 bmw 7 series.
im thinking about trading in my ep3 type R for this jag.
your leaving out the reliability factor in the 460, those are just about the only top end cars that are not grenades, as well as the gs450h and the ls600h, but h's are on a whole diffrent level.
Tweaked the styling? They went from all steel to aluminum in '04. The last real jag was built in 2003
This and the old Maserati Quattroporte are the most beautiful cars in the world. But I would definetly take this over a Maserati. And of course a Ranhe Rover Autobiography.
That's not as bad as the part where he says 'I'm a racing driver in my 30s...' he was a few months away from 40 when this was aired. It says it all that he drives a 911 turbo with the number plate 'P1ATO'
looks fantastic!
what yr model spec is this?
@bonnerfinn They did, until they came out with the 2010 XJ...
i'm about to buy a xj8 at my age yes it the car to have.
JAG'S RULE
@jamesjr934 its not just your opinion....its a fact
the other thing i hate is reviewers harping on about the specifications and equipment. why are you spending half the time telling me stuff i could look up in the online brochure. i want to know what the essence of the car is about, how it fits in with it's competitors, why i should/n't buy this car, why fans love and why others would go with a merc or a bmw, it's reliability.....
i like my 1990 xj6 nice and cool
Whats the song at the beginning; till about 0:27?
The X308 looks so much better.
The host is so mean, this car is awesome!!! I own a 2003 S-type r and the car is fantastic I race race Bimmers and Mercs all the . I win most of the time
Driven one?
why did they put that slat on the side?
worse as in what??please explain
What is the song 0:01 - 0:23
@Rlnthndr it's a Ford sedan
x300 XJR is the best.
high contrast -seven notes in black
badass wheels.
paul mottram - morning dow
What's the bet that Jason Plato will look like this when he's 70...minus the 'stache.
yeah, the new bumpers suck... espesially the front one, but still the great car with gorgeous style
well ofcourse FifthGear would call this a "ShootOut". lol
Jags will always be cooler than german cars no matter how technologically advanced they are.
@tommyb2b1 it,s sad you had a bad experience with a jag, but, there was obviously issues with it prior to you buying it, any car can crap out if the owner mistreats it, it,s mechanical after all, you just bought a lemon, better luck for future buys,--- a sloth in the twisties ? as i said, buy a sports car, people don't buy luxury autos to race
or thrash them, well, normal people don't anyway, kia ora.
I bought my S - Type at 20
this guy is a fool. xjr's are the business.
Plastic engine tensioners? Always break and drop the timing chain, very expensive repair and you need a good machine shop to straighten the eight valves! terriblely made ie;98-2001 this year is no better?
top notch under the highest notch where BMW and Mercedes Rule :)
I don't get it. All you people going on about how he's an idiot and so on. He's expecting a sporty drive because it's a sports model. there made by the same company, have the same engine, look similar on the inside, why not compare them? its more like a dad and his son
hahah, great idea with getting older for the test.
Who is this guy? Disgusting. Cero class. That’s why he can’t understand such a classic beauty like the XJ.
Great Car, with lots of class unlike many of the german rivals and in particular the pricks who buy them .
Maybe the facelift wasn't so bad 'cause at least it now looks different from the previous model. But still, the American styling sucked. It made the car less elegant.

Have any of you "chaps" ever driven one of these before? Maybe your that good, you can comment without doing so?
Plato is a quick driver but alas a turd.
slugish with a 5 second 0-60 time? smarten up.
u like jag but do not insult those who prefer benz or bmw. it is very naive and biased of u. i love jaguars but i just have to say that this car looks Sooooo.......ooo inferior to the s-class and the 7-series.

if he drove the xkr he would have jizzed the xkr's have never been good if you ask me and i have owned many jaguars including the very first e model
Gfff
i hate this man....
lv the car though..!:p
Bad review, no wonder 5th gear is a failed car’s show.
This is very very stupid.
I thought that was really funny!
Terrible car though. Sluggish and ugly.. I think its been tampered by a Mustang driving American?
waaaaaayyyyy ugly car, it was supossed to be elegant, not a pimped out version of a saloon car, damn it
Driven one?
