Fifty-two years after they stopped recording together, the Beatles still make billions of human beings smile every day. They truly were the greatest ever.
John lennon read about Mr. Mustard in the news paper. John also met a woman who ate polythene.
A fan climbed through a bathroom window of Paul's house and stole some of his items.
Golden Slumbers is an old English song that Paul improvised.
"And in the end/the love you take/is equal to the love you make". Possibly the best nugget of wisdom ever on any piece of recorded music.
so, I was teaching some years ago m there was a small group of graduating seniors who took most of their classes together and they had physics before my class and there was a more anticipatory casual atmosphere around them w discussions of 'adulting.' one spring day they came onto class astonished and reveling in wonder as if they'd returned from the sermon on the mount and remarked how Mr. G was just so incredibly deep and wise and philosophical. okay, he was smart and worldly, but, really? when I asked what he said was so brilliant, they recited THIS VERY LINE from the closing of The End!! I literally laughed out loud.
I have ALWAYS felt that same thing about that beautiful line.
My favourite line in all the Beatles’ music.
Their final synchronized bow. Full circle.
The medley is arguably one of the most brilliant combinations of music ever put together. Instead of bits and pieces thrown together it is more like a collage. A uniform piece of art. And it still holds up extremely well today, 50+ years later.
Fundamental mistake, which some will probably mention: one should listen to the songs from "You never give me your money" to "The End" without interruption. The ingenious transitions in this medley increase the listening pleasure enormously.
Good point but I guess he would need to listen through twice...first time to hear Side 2 in its entirety and without stops but after all he is doing a reaction presentation so that requires him to pause and offer his throughts, opinions and reactions....therefore meriting a second listen

Isn't this a shame, too, that these younger listeners are so used to hearing little songs instead of Big Albums. Well... hopefully, he'll go back and listen to the whole thing, and for weeks.

I don't like the medley. Too much chopping and changing. Mustard and Pam are way too short and should've been extended.
They had enough material really for 3 sides of an album if not 4. That was the problem. It would've taken too long to record and they weren't getting along.

This second side of the album HAS to be listened to fully, completely, without interruption. It's a suite. It's unbelievably brilliant and powerful and evocative and emotional and famous for darned great reasons.

@@keithbrown7685 obviously, although there is also no question that The Beatles themselves were responsible to some extent as well for the overall shape and direction of the production of the album, particularly Paul, who had taken a very active role in production since 'Pepper'.
A college friend of mine who was into classical music and prog rock would't stoop down to the lowly ranks of rock 'n roll and he asked me what was the deal with the Beatles... And I told him "You know how everything you listen to is being played by the best guitar player and the best bassist and the best keyboardist and whatever... This is not, they just play what needs to be played, nothing more, nothing less." After a week of binging into the Beatles catalog and getting hung up on Abbey Road he told me "I get it now!!" He's been a fan ever since!!
I love Paul McCartney's voice. Whether it is sweet or harsh he did both like nobody's business
A female fan of The Beatles broke into Paul's house by climbing in through the bathroom window and she took some of his things as memorabilia. He did not press charges against her. That was the inspiration for the song: "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window".

Imagine hearing this for the first time as I did in 1969 when I was 17.
Yup, it was unbelievable. But then again listening to each album as they came out was an incredible experience. Especially the anticipation.

I had just turned 19 in September of 1969 when this album was released. Seven months later, the band that had informed my teenage years broke up. In the intervening half century, this album has been described as lush, epic, emotional and gorgeous by critics. For me, it's incredibly poignant and nostalgic when Paul sings, " Once there was a way to get back homeward. " It's like they are saying thanks and goodbye to their fans. A brlliant collection of timeless songs!
"Her Majesty" was originally an UNLISTED secret track that you only heard when you forgot to lift up the needle to the record when you thought the album was over. It was a delight to discover, especially if you went a while without knowing it was there. They spoiled the surprise by listing it on the CDs and album reissues. Quite a shame. "The End" should be thought to be the end.
Her Majesty was supposed to fall in between Mean Mr Mustard and Polothene Pam, but didn't so they put it on the end of the LP
@@keithharris6442 Actually it was supposed to be discarded but by that time there was a directive in force from EMI Studios to never trash _any recording_ by the Beatles. So the recording engineer cut out "Her Majesty" and simply attached a bit of leader tape to the end of the reel and tacked "Her Majesty" on _that._ And it seems everyone forgot about it but when it was noticed while preparing the master tape, the Beatles decided to keep it as a cute little quirk. That long pause you hear before this track is that piece of the leader tape. And yes, it should have not been listed on the CDs. The last track of the last Beatles record is called "The End".
@@JanPBtest agree about The End. If you listen to Polothene Pam, the way ut ends is the start of Her Majesty. So I'm thinking they cut it out and plopped it on the end of the record

If it hasn't already been addressed, the gobbledygook at the end of 'Sun King' is a pastiche of Italian and Spanish and Portuguese, with English. It's quite clever and silly, especially in translation, but it sounds gorgeous when spoken, and that's part of why it works, even if it does turn out to be a random assortment of amusing phrases in four different languages...
Paul ends every concert with “The End” - I’ve seen him several times since 2014, it’s equally uplifting and gorgeous with a human message we all need. #LoveYou

Classic error of not listening to the medley all the way through. I’m so glad I got to experience that on my first listen. I was mind blown.

My fav ever Beatles album, incredible. Best ending to an album ever
I have always found a deep sadness in many of Paul’s songs. Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight are definitely tinged with Paul’s sadness that despite all his efforts, the Beatles are coming to the end of the road. The song “The End” was all four of them giving their last best ever performance as a group, as Ringo starts the song out with a drum solo, then Paul, John, and George take turns doing guitar solos. You intuited correctly; it was them, either consciously or unconsciously saying good by to us all as the Beatles.
The Beatles didn't shy away from surreal lyrics and musical experimentation.

The last 2/3rds of this side is a medley. Hence why the songs are so short. It's meant to be listened to as a whole. The transitions between the songs are frequently crucial to the feel. :)
Beautiful song and beautiful reaction. I have hard time listening to this and not crying. George was a beautiful soul. Reminds me of all that that is beautiful now, and all that was beautiful in the past that has gone, and all that could be beautiful in the future
Still Colour If you consider how they started 7 years earlier (Love me do), you can consider them just a miracle.
Short and connected because you are now in the middle of the Abbey Road medley and they are all meant to be played together!
This was their goodbye (and I guess nobody else saw your message that you had recorded this at the same time as part one, so you didn’t know about the long medley lol. They strung a bunch of unfinished songs together.) It was the last album they recorded but “Let It Be“ actually came out last because the documentary took so long to make. You can hear Paul’s frustration with the Allen Klein situation and his sadness over what was happening to them in “his” songs within the medley (not “Bathroom Window,” that was about a groupie who broke into his house through the bathroom window.) The song, “The End” was the last track all 4 worked on together. They took turns playing guitars - Paul, George, John and the final line, “And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love… you make.” 😩 “Her Majesty” was a hidden track (maybe the first but not sure about that.) Fun to watch, as always ❤️ You have to listen to “Revolver” :)
It's great to hear young people listen to the Beatles. Interesting note: Her Majesty was was cut from the end of an earlier track. The engineer whose job was to send the final tape to the record press saw the piece of tape and did not want to throw it away so he put the end of album marker on the tape and then added the cut piece of tape to the end. This and other BTS information is in the book "Here There and Everywhere" by Geoff Emerick who was the Beatles recording engineer at Abbey Road
I get choked up every time I hear 'Because'... it hits deep in the DNA.
Back then 'turning on' was more akin to switching on, or opening your mind. If you wanted to 'turn someone on', you were saying that you wanted to open their mind to the realities of life and to reality itself, in all it's many forms. :)
Abbey Road was the last album The Beatles recorded.
Earlier that year, they had recorded a cancelled project called "Get Back", which included their final concert atop the roof of 3 Saville Row, London.
After the Beatles broke up, these recordings were rearranged and released as their parting gift to the fans, Let It Be.
Except at the time they recorded and filmed what you now call Get Back" was actually called "Let It Be." I was 14 in 1970 and saw the original in the theater. They could have called the new project "Let it Be II" but it was probably wiser to retitle it to avoid confusion so they called it "Get Back." Unfortunately time will rewrite the history of this project as only "Get Back" and ignore the first film we saw that was released in 1970, however inferior in quality and narrative [quite dark film in quality and a painting a one sided picture...so yes, I do like the Get Back series much better....who wouldn't?

It should have been scrapped. It would have been better to get it out there as "unreleased tracks" rather than an official album. It doesn't sound like a Beatles album at all and they knew it.
Listen to it however you want to. You can always go back and listen to it in its entirety another time.
From You Never Give Me Your Money through The End should be listened to as a single composition, not as separate tracks.

i see it as the culmination of all their efforts and musical wisdom. i see no flaws in Abbey Road. George H. , one of three masters i respect, has such a distinct sound on his guitar, a sound i have known for 50 years. No one plays that guitar like George. i'm happy that i have known of and heard the great sounds of the guys all these years.

The End, then a moments silence to witness the passing of the greatest band there ever was. Her Majesty I always feel is merely there to punctuate the silence. A nice ditty but to me The End, is The End. And what better declaration than “And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love, you make”
That's what I thought too! I always thought they were walking away into the light and with the last Harmony they look back and then the fade away 😢😢😢
Her Majesty was going to be the link between Mr Mustard and Pam, but Paul had second thoughts so it was cut out and, after some hesitation, relocated to the end as a final wave through the closed curtain from the unofficial leader of the Beatles
It's such a joy to watch you experience this amazing album for the first time. Yes, this was The Beatles goodbye. What a f'ing way to go out. And as to what specific songs mean, I'd offer that as works of art they're not necessarily "about" something specific (sure, "Something" is clearly a love song, etc) but they're meant to take you somewhere, to let you experience something, make you think, question, laugh, wonder. Great job, Jervis!

Though this album was their last in the studio together, the previously recorded Let It Be album was released after Abbey Road. But as stated, it was indeed the last album and The End is indeed their farewell as the band knew deep down, their days together were over. Carry That Weight refers to the fact each of them knew they would always bear the burden of having once been a part of the most legendary band in modern times for the rest of their lives.
The end of the record gives each of the Beatles a chance to come to the fore in the songs, even Ringo gets a solo. As said earlier in the comments - you have to listen to all of these continuously to get the effect. This was the last album recorded by them - and it is self-referential in many places about their lives as individuals, the effects of fame on them, and it reflects the thoughts of a group that knew it was breaking up.
30:57 the guitar solo at the end was played by John, Paul and George and yes, it was the last album they made. It was a kind of sign off.

Golden slumbers into Carry This Weight is the most beautiful transition and music I've ever heard
you should go back to where the change started back in Early 1966 with "Revolver" you can see the flower of creativity bursting to open. And the last track..... Oh! that will blow you away! ;)
I think the key to unlocking the profound beauty of the album is learning when to appreciate the meaning of the lyrics, when to appreciate the imagery of the lyrics, when to appreciate mood of the song, and when to appreciate the musical artistry. This album has..it..ALL! And when you get these aspects in combination it's just magical. I've dissected this album for over 50 years and it still amazes me to this day!
The Beatles are the greatest gift given to the world.
Congratulations, you have just finished listening to the best album of all time. No go back and listen to it again another 300, 400, or 500 times like the rests of us have. It just gets better and better.
Abbey Road is flipping brilliant. I was only 7 when it was released. As much as I love a lot of music including some modern music, the Beatles were the work.
Throughout their career, the Beatles consistently reminded us of our creative and eclectic their music was, and also our gorgeous their harmonies were.
The skills and techniques used by the Beatles in their instrumentation is extraordinary and all of the tracks are beautifully produced. It cannot be overstated how creative this album is. So pleased you enjoyed it. I was about 15 when the Beatles 'burst' onto the scene and I still listen to their music constantly today. John Lennon once said that their music would be as relevant in 50 years as it was at the time he was interviewed and he was murdered in New York in 1980!

This is the first time that I’ve heard each single track separately. For the past 50 years I’ve been listening to the album completely in one sitting. About the lyrics. As a kid I felt like the lyrics were either very straightforward or very silly and sometimes have random meanings. They always had such a wit about them. I prefer to listen to the music without trying to dissect the meaning. It’s hard to figure out what they’re thinking , right?

This was The Beatles last album, and then they broke up for good! They went out completely on top. Some fans think this is their best album.
The last several tracks are put together as a medley….go back and listen to it WITHOUT INTERRUPTION! Right after “Because.” These tracks were all unfinished songs that they never got around to finishing, so they brilliantly strung them together to create a final medley for your enjoyment. The song makes no sense because it’s just clips put together.
But the BEST clip is at the very end, called The End….The Beatles FINAL MESSAGE TO THEIR FANS….”The love you take is equal to the love you make.” Always remember this!
In 1969 I brought this album and locked myself in my room for a month just listening to it. Best album of all time.

The evolution of this band from the first album to the last is just staggering , and all in 8years. It would take at least 20 yrs for any other band to evolve like this but because of the sheer pressure to keep making hit record after hit record it forced the evolution , like George said it was like growing Rubharb in a greenhouse it's obviously going to grow much faster , and I can't think of a better analogy that late great George Harrisons, RIP John and George and long live the Beatles music ! Eternal.

Here Comes the Sun is the most streamed of all Beatles songs - which is amazing
It was their last album so the end was a goodbye. Let It Be was released later when they were breaking up but the songs on it were recorded earlier and shelved.
The line - one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, all good children went to heaven, is from a children’s counting game. I have seen traditional rhymes like this used in various songs over the years. It is somewhat similar to the counting crows rhythm - one for sorrow, two for mirth, three for a wedding and four for a birth. Or things like London Bridge is falling down, or the Mother Goose rhythm that begins with - sing a song of six pence, a pocket full of rye. Each of these childhood sing song rhymes has an interesting history that typically involves superstitions and/or political messages that people didn’t want to be overt about. They get passed down through the centuries and then crop up in popular culture here and there.
And some other playground chants are misheard foreign language phrases reduced to nonsense
You're overthinking all this, my friend. It's just a collection of McCartneys more sensitive side, a bit of Lennon craziness and wordplay, Harrison's mellowness. Like others have commented, it's one piece of music meant to be listened to in its entirety. And, of course, Macca's best lyric ever: "the love you take is equal to the love you make".

Yes. The Abbey Road Medley needs to be listened to fully to appreciate its quality. I love the whole album, but always wait in anticipation for the beginning of "You Never Give Me Your Money", and the rest of the medley.

"And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make." What a fitting signoff from one of the most impactful acts in the history of pop culture, let alone music. It's so infuriating the label goons threw "Her Majesty" at the end of the official album release -- totally ruined the farewell the Beatles sent to their fans.
Now, please, on your own, re-listen to side two, starting with "You Never Give Me Your Money", to "The End, as one continuous song, and you will understand the full magic of this medley.
The second side medley is wonderful, just exploding wth energy, creativity, and pop hooks. It's like a final burst of fireworks before the poignancy of the closing tracks. 'Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight', interspersed with 'You Never Give Me Your Money' tears at your heartstrings - I may want it played at my funeral. 🙂
'The End' is the perfect last track - pretty much the message they wanted to leave us with - followed, appropriately, by an irreverent-but-affectionate take on 'God Save The Queen', which would still have been sung following most public events in the 1950's when they were all growing up - a nice touch.
You have to think they knew it was likely their last album. Paul's fingerprints - his artistic judgement and his acute awareness of 'situation' - are clearly evident, as they were once more on the marvellous video for 'Now And Then', and as he demonstrated with his almost tearful "and then there were two..." comment in the 'Get Back' documentary, made in the same year as 'Abbey Road'. And of course there are now 'just two'.
People talk about the musical genius of the Beatles but they are perhaps also unique in the way they have stayed culturally relevant, and have never allowed their identity or 'brand' to become diluted, almost 60 years after they stopped performing together as a group. I think they would just say that they were being true to themselves, but that kind of vision, conviction, and of course talent, is rare.
It’s all different now, but back in the day in 1969 when the album was released all we had was records, and Her Majesty was I believe the first hidden track ever on an album.
The End was the last track as it felt, and then about 30 seconds later if you hadn’t have lifted the stylus manually Her Majesty kicked in, as I don’t believe it was listed as a track (please correct me if I am wrong).
The Beatles are first on so many things, and this on their last recorded album was a perfect way to say goodbye.

the first hidden track of The Beatles is commonly called "Sgt Pepper's Inner groove", on the Sgt. Pepper album. it was the last groove on side two of the album just before the dead spot.
i was alive and not too young when that came out, and as a newcomer you did a great job, mate, better than I could have done in 1969. You'll have been told that the medley is not to be stopped and broken up by many people, which is true, but how were you to know? As for side 2, you are trying to look for meaning in every lyric, but they are actually bits of songs Macca and Lennon had hanging around unfinished, and it was clearly Macca who came up with the idea of just putting them all together. There's no relation between them. The whole closing medley is indeed a Good-bye. The greatest album ever made, in my humble opinion. At times, they sound just the four of them like an orchestra.
Make sure you don’t pause between tracks on side two- it’s meant to be listened to as a suite of music together, not as separate songs once you hit “You Never Give Me Your Money”…
Side two is mostly a medley that you should just let keep going!!!!❤️👍
abbey road should be listened to without a pause its one recording melting into each other!
That's why they're the Beatles
Beatles songs, particularly from this era, were to me, not so much "about" one thing but rather were expressions of sensual perceptions. A collage of impressions and stream of consciousness. There are little messages in there both to the world and to each other but as many have said, this does seem to come across as an unconscious goodbye. It is wistful in places, but I also get a sense of longing for something. "Because" is sublime and apparently was inspired by Yoko Ono playing Moonlight Sonata and John asked her to play the chords backwards- that is the often-reported story anyway. "You Never Give Me Your Money" was inspired by their business problems. The foreign language sounding part of "Sun King" is gibberish, a mixture of Spanish, Portuguese and Italian with John Lennon's made-up words and he ends with "cake and eat it". Much of the medley is made up of part finished songs that they couldn't be bothered to finish. I could go on, but I would say that I really enjoyed seeing it from your point of view. This album is so familiar to me it is like an old and trusted talisman, but I often feel melancholy as I often wonder what might have been had they been able to weather the storm that they were in at that time. I don't think they had consciously decided that it would be the last album and there have been reports from a so-called lost recording of a meeting where they were talking about a looser relationship with them each being free to do solo work but when they did get together, a more equal share of songs on future albums. But part of the magic is that they had a finite time together. They certainly made it count.
I do wonder if all the fame wore them down. I still they would have organically recognized at some point.

That's incorrect (I bet you got it from the Beat Goes On video!) The last track on the album to be commenced was Because, the last one on the album to be finished was I Want You - and the actual last song they ever recorded in their original lifespan was I Me Mine.
Her Majesty is the original hidden track
I bought that album on vynil (we're talking the early 1990s; cd players were still too expensive, and streaming didn't exist). Now, somehow my copy had side 2 pressed on both sides of the record. By the time I realized that's the case, I've listened to that second side twice. I was so in love with the music that I never went to the store to get it replaced.

As others have stated, on Side 2 of Abbey Road the songs after Here Comes The Sun are meant to be played as one continuous medley, with no interruption between the songs - the ending of one song flows into the beginning of the next.
Because doesn't really fall into the medley, there is no transition between it, and you never give me your money it's more of a standalone separate from the medley

Love your reactions. Your body language/facial expressions give away your enjoyment so much. Loved that! There are so many points raised by others which I agree with. I’m not going to repeat them here. But I am lifelong fan of The Beatles and find all of their music inspirational. My final point is pure conjecture: in the UK, up until the 1960s, at the end of a film in the cinema, or when TV shut down for the night, the national anthem “God save the Queen” was played. So when they played their last song together they followed convention but played their version of the national anthem - Her Majesty!

Too bad you didn't hear the medley right. But anyway, it was one of the best reacts I've ever seen. You respect the song when you listen to it and only comment afterwards, that's great!(and hard to see in the reactions of other channels).
Paul always played the hell out of his bass..the Hoffner. I suspect it will go with him into the ground he's about 80 now

From "mean Mr Mustard" onwards it's really a whole. Like a mini opereta.
I grew up on the Beatles. I was lucky enough to hear all their music as it was released and experience the development of their artistry in real time. Major experience for millions of us. This was the pinnacle of their accomplishments and remains iconic and unmatched in beauty.
The Beatles are a miracle✌️❤️
The Beatles are one of my favorite examples of why it’s often a mistake to fixate on the “meaning” of lyrics.
Lyrics, especially great ones, are adjuncts to the sound. They may paint images in one’s head, of course, which helps the music, but they need not “mean” anything. The Beatles wrote poetry, sometimes nonsense poetry, that rolled off the tongue so easily it didn’t matter if the words were nothing but placeholders for rhythm or melody.
With great music, lyrics are music first, “meaning” second.

The side-two medley is a bunch of unfinished songs that they quite cleverly put together. Meant to be listened to as one long song. Ringo notoriously hates drum solos and the solo in this medley was a negotiation. Him not wanting to do it at all and the rest of the band trying to get him to play it as long as possible.
I play my air drums every time I hear it.
I didn't know that, but I'm glad they got him to do the solo.
What many from the CD generation on don't understand is the old concept of Side One and Side Two of a vinyl album. True artists, like The Beatles (and The Who, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, and more) understood how to use that distinction as part of their grand presentation. In the case of Abbey Road, Side Two is considered their best work as a group, and one of the last times they actually played in the studio as a group. So they used Side Two of Abbey Road as their goodbye to the world. And it is brilliant. 55 years on and I still shed a tear at The End.
The cheesy different languages bit at the end of Sun King is Lennon garbling any old bollocks that came to mind, I believe. In different languages some yet to be invented. Parasol and cake and eat it are in there somewhere.
I consider this an art rock album. And in that terrain, unlike their pre-White Album (and about half of Sgt. Pepper) work, I don't ever try to analyze the lyrics. In this way, the lyrics are abstract modes for the vocals to become just another instrument in the mix. The melody itself is the story -- it's about what the complete instrumentation and vocals evoke together. So you make up your own interpretation.
Carry that weight. They knew they would have to carry the weight of being The Beatles for a long time. They were only in their late 20’s/early 30’s, remember. They all went on to each have solo careers, very successful careers. But the sum of their parts separately never equaled the sum of their parts together, according to George Martin, their producer. They were always known as Beatle John, Beatle Paul, Beatle George, and Beatle Ringo.
This album is the first and only use of the Moog synthesizer by the Beatles. ("Maxwell's Silver Hammer", "I Want You (She's So Heavy)", "Here Comes The Sun", and "Because".) It was new and sounded extremely curious and interesting when this album was released.
