A Fully Narrative Wargame Experiment - TURNIP28 Battle Report
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 сер 2023
- An impromptu tabletop battle report made in our spare time, highly inspired by Dawn of War in its narrative framing, playing our favorite Inq28/Blanchitsu-inspired post-apocalyptic napoleonic wargame - Turnip28!
We kinda just started filming in the middle of the battle and went from there.
Behold the battle of the wills betwixt hag and hog.
Who will win, and who will sink in the slurry..?
This video is not sponsored, but look here for more info on Turnip28: / turnip28
The rules are free!!!
Thank you Max for letting us use some of your artwork and for making cool tabletop game!

For those confused, the opening introduction isn’t a parody. That’s really what the world of TURNIP28 is like - it's a grimdark Monty Python sketch.
I gathered as much from how medievally cartonishly grotesque everybody looks.
^This. You play as delusional officers and their fauning sycophants, leading groups of starving, cowardly, and incompetent root-mutants into battles across a world ravaged by war and a colossal world-tuber that sucks the life from the land. Pursuing hallucinatory visions of extinct root vegetables, and getting into fights with other warbands for _no good reason._
It would be soul-crushing if it wasn't so patently absurd as to make one laugh.
@@Bluecho4That sounds glorious and I love it
Thanks, TURNIP28 just looks like a coupon code to me so I wasn't sure what to make of this :p
So gamma world, but fantasy, sounds nice.
The image of a completely checked-out officer half-heartedly ordering his men to cannibalize each other, until a Mushroom Man stands alone, overcome with righteous purpose, and somehow fires 45 shots in 6 seconds with a goddam musket...is so overwhelmingly funny that I had to pause the video because I was laughing too hard.

Just going to leave marks for the Mushroom Man Saga here:
3:30 His first appearance.
4:28 He is Chosen!
4:35 Candles to be snuffed.
5:13 A Knight's faith awakens.
8:26 Mushy needs a snacky.
9:09 Suddenly, a spike in blood sugar!
10:10 The Duel begins!
11:11 Acceptance and Salvation.
13:25 Church of the New Son of Man.
Its funnier when I think about how the fuck the Emperor in TTS was made and this is like a fucked up we have mcdonalds at home version of the origin story of how several dudes "combined" to make him
Confidence is good, now please attack...
Surely, this man is the son of _God!_
He’s like a Custodian gone crazy after taking too much of the drugs used to make custodians for the Emperor.
I like the subtle gag of Hagilda very clearly getting a Saloon and a Salon mixed up

In the Philippines there's a snack in the form of pressed unleavened bread called Piyaya, children are fairly often told these were pressed with elephants.
i have no doubt that upon discovery of this the Church of the Mushroom man would use them in religious feasts
Yes, yes it would.
You guys instantly converted me to this game on the first turn alone.
A unit eating all but one of itself so it can throw a duck load of attacks at the enemy is just too fun for words!

Turnip28 is a thought experiment, I'm sure. Someone couldnt afford Warham figs, so they used vegetables instead. When they were done, they said “Hey, I'm onto something.”
I mean, not too far off, it was created as a way to play games with kitbashed historical miniatures and literal carved vegetables

Hello! I'm a big fan of Turnip28, but I don't think I've ever actually enjoyed watching a battle report in my life, despite many attempts.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video from start to finish. The fact I could follow what happened in the game but there was zero downtime and the narrative was fully voiced and in character was completely game changing for me. Probably helps that Turnip28 lends itself well to goofy humour as well - this didn't feel like a parody over anything other than just a story in that universe.
10/10 please do more of this
Checking if theres a bot here hmm
Ok clear of bot's moving on
I discovered Turnip28 through this video, and I've got to say: The models look *superb*. They're all very goofy but retain very distinctive looks individually. I'm considering picking a few up already. :]
I vouch this, Would be fun to see it as a series too
Mushroom Man's story was truly powerful, a solemn tale of ambition, loss, hope, bravery, defiance, acceptance of the futility and war and finally sacrifice. May all remember the story of the New Son of Man.

A thrilling tale of the 23-year War of the Straight and Narrow Path, between the forces of Knog Karola von Richtensteinhophenburgerdorf and Hagilda de Louisouisouisou over the great and fantastic purpose of redrawing a small municial footpath. This war dragged on for 23 long years and yielded a total of 25 casualties, 11 of which were from cannibalism.
The result was the creation of the Parish of the Faith of the Unbegotten Shroom, a small, bustling tax haven with a population of five.

We need a rule were you roll a d6, use that many other d6 for the next throw and the summ of that is the total amount of dice used for the final throw which shows the damage finally.

agreed. you already have several angles for it. Hagilda's eternal quest for better haircare leading her to hire numerous chaotic mercenaries and fight all manner of other cults in her desire to go STRAIGHT to the Saloon(salon), or any other place she desires. Grubhub of course maintaining the rapidly collapsing 'kingdom' of the old fort while rebuilding the regiment and eating each other, the knight forming a new cult and building up its power and might while also contending with the eldrich horrors of this already lost world. add in any new characters that would be fitting and suddenly your crafting a whole narrative of insane and desperate people all struggling to contend with the living hell of the endless war and the twisted festering world.

hey, just wanted to say I really appreciate that you folks put contextual subtitles directly into your videos. I'm clinically deaf and my ears don't work so good. The neurological tinnitus doesn't help either. So being able to read along, stopping at the right points, the necessary exaggerations in context with the shenans. It makes it so much easier and so much more fun enjoying the work you put into this. Thank you. 🙂
Could you guys do a lore video on Turnip28? this setting looks like a lot of fun.
Honestly, this is the lore:
Two thousand years after the defeat of Napoleon, Europe is still at war, everything has turned to mud, and the people have gotten so dumb to the point they wage “wars” over petty squabbles, with sizes of hardly 30 men; the discussion of which type of vegetable is best being the most common.
Speaking of vegetables, they are worshiped, and some of them have even mutated to living beings that respawn in the swamps.
Technology has all but been forgotten, powder weapons (muskets and cannons specifically) are considered lost technology and are the most powerful weapons on this setting.
Livestock has mutated into vegetable-meat hybrids, crabs have gotten VERY BIG, cannibals are a common sight, and there’s a cult that dedicates itself into planting a mutated Turnip that grows fast and starts using it’s roots for hunting; think of it as an “eldritch” Turnip version of Kudzu. Their mechanics definitedly feel like it.
Not much else, just setting.
TLDR; A fuckin mutant turnip grows out of the ground during the Napoleonic wars, shit stagnates and gets all stanky, and boom peak dumbassery.
I laughed, I cried, I shitted. I need more of of this stuff!
This is the only battle report that makes you question your sanity.
More, plz.
After watching this, I went and read the rule book. After reading the rule book, I went and read the free first issue of the magazine, with it's model making tips and a beautifully horrific short story. After all this, I both desire to begin making my own horrible Regiment, as well as find people to play with. I hope you and the rest of the gang make more stuff in this setting Alfa, as it's just as wretched and hilarious as you guys.
This was the funniest, weirdest piece of wargaming I have ever seen. I wish to see more in the future. Keep up the good work Alfabusa!

In a land too close for comfort is such a good line.
"gets his fingernail stuck in a tank trap - and dies immediately. The rest mourn his loss and don't move another inch."
I don't know why, but this broke me. Mr. Alfabusa, your ability to craft such comedic gold from anything with what seems to be natural Macguyver-esque talent never ceases to entertain.
P.S. Moar Boy episodes ples. Clearly Boy is the chosen one, and we must see his journey as he protects the precious Smerples from both Camarilla killers (Camarillers?) and the Demon-Horse corrupted Fleas that we all know Horse has been shedding all over the place. Will Boy be up to the challenge? We must know! For Boys Bulbous Bempire!
The battle reports were some of my favorite parts of TTS so this was a delight-doing my part to feed the algorithim so we can see hopefully see more in the future!
I'm glad to see you're not the only one here frantically excited for the new episode
I’m excited for this new series. The battle mini storytelling method is great because literally anyone can die so you never know where the story goes next!
More, I didn't even know what Turnip28 was, and this has opened my eyes. It's amazing, I would adore more of these Dawn of War style battle reports for any sort of tabletop game.
Would love to see more frankly. T28 is so interesting and a great opportunity for storytelling, I just gotta get around to building and painting (as per usual)
I love the higher-concept of a post-apocalyptic warworld based exclusively on European fairytale-esque visuals twisted into various war factions.
Like, elderly bog hag covens that use church bells as cannons, easily-impressed lapine knights that employ tap-dancing trumpet-nosed blue monsters that are loosely defined as "elephants", and loathsome boar-men that come in so many shapes and sizes it's a wonder they still look like boars. It's got a LOT going on with it.
