- This is some seriously dumb jiujitsu advice.
This advice is not only bad, it can be harmful.
In this video I rant about the "don't use your strength when you roll" mantra repeated throughout BJJ, why I think it's dumb and what to do instead.

I'd say become a strength monster with enough endurance and flexibility to apply a solid game. I'm a white belt but rolling with people who are physically weaker than me gives me time to think about my next move instead of fighting for my dear life. I'm focused on defense, escapes and using my strength in an economical way and it works so far.
Thank you for your video!
Agree with your point of view 100%.
Gave up on strength training because of this "bad advice". Paid in injuries.
If anyone new comes in - always say to them, keep training strength.
Love this ❤ needed to hear this advice ❤
Mixed feelings about this. The "advice" was always used to get a wild man to slow down a bit when he was paired with someone he could manhandle. Personally I do not bother telling people this if they are new and red lining with their muscular efforts. If I am rolling with them I just smash them, if I they are in class and I am not rolling I put them with a purple belt or higher and it works itself out.
Strategically use strength or experience that actually cardio is King.
Cardio 👑
It's interesting that nobody would give such an advice to a judoka or a wrestler
I tell people to stop using their strength when they are spazzy and applying no technique whatsoever. It's a nice way of telling them chill.
yeah for this specific purpose I 100% agree, I have had this recently where brand new white belt was just trying to max effort squeeze everything for dear life and this advice sort of applied.
But there are absolutely people who frown on the use of strength whatsoever and they are wrong imo
@@KierenLefevre Strength is important, as is mobility and stamina.
