    I used to go to Chipping Campden as a kid in the late 70s with my grandparents as we camped in their caravan nearby every year - theres a torch light procession every year , maybe sometime in May - well worth a look - I had'nt been there for about 40 years and went there about 3 years ago (2020) , its even better now you can really appreciate it as an adult (except for the part where i walked in to low beam inside one of the shops , i really could have done without that)

    • @MagentaOtterTravels
      @MagentaOtterTravels  6 місяців тому

      That sounds like a really interesting event to attend! Although yes, low beams are a definite risk in old buildings in the Cotswolds! Quite the hazard for tall people... 🤕

      I saw some cool doorways in Boston, but they are pretty boring here in Texas. It really is great fun looking at all the doorways around Britain! I love the themed door knockers... lovely sea-themed ones in Cornish fishing villages. And I encountered a lovely Dragon House in Wales... which hopefully I will post a video about eventually! *impatient eye roll emoji*

      I had to look it up. I do know where that house in is. And why Dara and Ian have a little flat in Cheltenham instead of a sprawling home in Chipping Campden! An excellent tour of Chipping Campden, with your usual historical research expertly woven with local knowledge into your superb narrative: throroughly compelling viewing! Loved the soundtrack, and the two cameo narrations by Ian, including appropriate biblical reference! (I'm now more sure than ever that it's not Ian's camera-shyness that keeps his pieces to camera so few and so short, but his very high appearance fees! 😜) The whole programme was a nostalgic reminder of a Cotswolds cycle tour that included a stop at Chipping Campden. Thank you.

    Absolutely fabulous, I don’t know why but Campden always seams to play second fiddle to other Cotswold towns and villages , especially Broadway
    You did a great job showing this stunning town at its best but you could have made a 1/2 video because of its history
    Campden house was burned down by the Royalists to stop Cromwell getting hold of their headquarters. As it’s so close to the church Cromwell thought the town had been sacked so did not attack it
    John Fereby helped found Eton Collage and also put money into forming Campden Grammer school , I went with over a 1000 former pupils to the 550 celebration . Hicks , Fereby and Townsend have all be involved with the school and have a house each named after them that the pupils join when going there
    The Campden wonder is a famous tale of a Tax collectors that went missing and then re appeared , unfortunately not soon enough to save the lives of 2 people who where hung for his murder , because of this there was a legal president that you could not be found guilty of murder without a body being found
    Robert Dovers games or the Cotswold Olimpicks ( correct spelling ) the forerunner of the modern day Olympics will have its 410 anniversary this May , with its famous shin kicking plus other games , then follows a torch light procession into the Town square with a fair on the Saturday
    So as you can see no ordinary Cotswold Town , I just love your vids keep them coming

    • @MagentaOtterTravels
      @MagentaOtterTravels  2 роки тому

      Thanks so much, David! I LOVE hearing all that historical context! I had no idea the "shin kicking games" were REAL!!! wow.
      I am absolutely drowning in Cotswold content.... I filmed WAY too much last summer! I'm still trying to get my way through it without making 35 minute videos that nobody would watch. I have to take a break from Cotswold vids for next Friday, but then I'll be back the following week with Burford... another beautiful place with interesting Cromwell history! ;-) Cheers! XX Dara

    Your comment about not wearing 5 inch heels on cobblestones reminded me of the best bit of social media commentary that I saw recently. One of the journalists (Female!) reporting on the visit made by the Duchess of Cambridge to Copenhagen. Kate and Crown Princess Mary walked across a cobblestone square (little square cobbles, not the big flagstones) both were in high heels, the heels were not only high but also they were pencil thin stillettos! Much admiration was exclaimed from the female readers, 'How do they do it?" Do royal women have training sessions like an obstacle course? First test, walk across cobbles in high heels!

    Those gorgeous homes are a treat for the eyes. They also remind me of the chocolate and biscuit tins often sold in souvenir shops. Oh Dara I have that too, when I walk on cobbled streets of old or the market squares. I can almost hear the carriage and cart wheels, the horses' hoeves and the footsteps. The history so comes alive. Love the yellow stone, bit like in the south of the Netherlands ( Valkenburg) A natural resource much used to build iconic homes. As a child I was always confused about that saying Ian. You may be interested to know the statues of the dogs at the doorways are Talbot hounds. The Talbot was a type of hunting hound common in England during the Middle Ages. It is depicted in art of the period as small to medium-sized, white in colour, with short legs, large powerful feet, a deep chest with a slender waist, long drooping ears, and a very long curled tail.
    Unfotunately the breed is now extinct.

      I am very interested to hear that! Thanks for the background and description. I will appreciate these statues now even more!
      So sad that the breed is extinct! I'm going to be doing a video one day about Britons and their dogs... I might have to give this a mention.
      Cheers! XX Dara

    We are planning our first trip to the Cotswolds for a few days next year and staying in Chipping Campden. Still not sure if we will hire a car or not because we are really nervous to drive. I’m wondering do you think there’s enough to visit and see by foot and public transport from there?

    • @MagentaOtterTravels
      @MagentaOtterTravels  Рік тому

      Yes I understand the hesitancy about driving. I actually don't drive when I am in England! There is a lot to explore in Chipping Campden and nearby areas. There are also local buses you can take. And there are also Cotswold tours that you can go on. So you can skip hiring a car if you prefer.
