You can not compare the sound made by an F-mound AF-S lens to the sound made by any Z-mount lens. The new Z-mount use an auto-focus similar to the newer AF-P system which is both quieter and faster focusing. the "cricket noise " is typical from afs motor it will not act differently on a dslr. Got the 300mm f4 afs D on my d750 makes a lot of noise ( at least much than canon )
@@rickvestuto yeah definitively much than canon usm, it's a problem, using that on the z6 not much noise but animals can from time to time ear the noise!
Serious question -- Is there even one single usable 16-35mm F2.8 that does not have loud clicking motor problems with FTZ? Or is there even one usable 18mm F2.8 prime on the whole system that does not have loud clicking motor problems with FTZ? I'm doing video work. What lens am I supposed to use? I have 0 options.
Agreed That's why I can ONLY recommend For the Nikon "Z" system...... The native lenses are the only way to go They are so much faster than the older lenses too Best regards, rick
@@rickvestuto I'm perfectly willing to buy Z lenses, but the lens selection is extremely limited! The only wide angle zoom is F4. And there's no primes below 24mm. I'm coming from Sony E-Mount where we have hundreds of lenses now.
@@zyxyuv1650 Agreed but don't forget that Nikon is coming out with the 20mm F1.8 next month and the 85mm f/1.8 in two months Then the 14-24 f/2.8 in the first quorter of 2020 I just bought the 24-70 F/2.8 and it's a fantastic lens for what i do Be patience my friend all will be good in 2020 for sure Will you be sending in your Z6 to get the upgrade for the ProRes RAW?
Hai sir I really appreciate your opinion on not buying the old f mount glass to the new z mount camera 👍 I am facing the same problem having purchased… Wynette returning the old glass and switch to native one🤗
I think, It's because their first generation, be patient, give them several years to grow and make it better in the future. By the end, I think all cameras will be electronic without any mirror like the Z9.
I agree in that if you already own high-end Nikon systems like the D850 With high end glass, there's no real value in switching to the Z-system and adapting the glass. That being said, I am not so sure the difference between Z and F Mount glass in terms of Focus speed (comparing native Z on a Z6/7 to adapted F on Z6/7) is that noticable. Noise is an obvious difference, although the native Z glass is not 100% silent either. I own the 24-70 F4 native Z lens and an F Mount Tamron 70-200 F2.8 G2. In terms of Focus speed the difference not Clear, and in some cases the tamron lens was faster. It does have more noise, but not to the point where it bothers me. Does not matter to me when taking Pictures. Now just to be Clear, this is my point of view as a hobbyist. And i will continue adapting lenses, that i know work well on the Z system, even if they are not 100% on par With the native lenses. Simply because there is a lot of Money to save. And since i am no Professional, i like to save where i can. Based on the price of the 24-70 2.8S I guestimate that i have saved at least 50%, probably a little more on buying the Tamron 2.8 70-200 G2 compared to the Nikon 70-200 2.8S when it is released some time in the future. And for my use, it is more than capable and gives great results.
As a quick response is In general newer technology is much faster than older wouldn't you agree? Especially since now we have "DUAL" focusing motors instead of the older single focusing motors that were and still, are much slower But don't take my word for it Look at some of Matt Grangers reviews on the Nikon Z adaptor Thanks for your comments Regards, Rick
And just for reference The Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS is a premium, constant maximum aperture full-frame (FE) telephoto zoom lens for the Sony E-mount, announced by Sony on February 3, 2016 that's almost 3 years later from the first alpha camera in 2013
Well, first of all, its a mirrorless camera. Meaning, if it does not have access to the polarity profile of the lens for whatever reason it will use contrast based focusing. In order to get to maximum per pixel contrast it needs to pass it in order to be able to measure it. Then the focusing motor reverses to the last known maximum contrast position. During that reverse it has to fight a lot of momentum. The focusing mechanisms of older lenses are not built to do that, they are heavy. And they are also noisy ... like 90% of al lenses regardless of the body or time they where released. That being said, lens profiles and compatibility is still being worked on. So .. now its 2021, maybe in 2023 we'll get the improvements for discontinued glass. Or ... it did already, I bought mine with the 1.1 update already on the adaptor (let me know if there where some measurable changes from 1.0 to 1.1 of the F lenses). I started to use manual focus again (lets face it, mirrorless probably has another decade to go to get to the speed of DSLR) which is way more fun than just "waiting" and/or "throwing away perfectly useable glass". No need to make the video so edgy. Unless you are farming views and comments. In that case .. GJ. Also, that "for mirrorless" add buzz of the lenses is essentially the speed and weight of the focusing mechanism.
The bottom line is : Older glass is old technology and will never have fast quiet twin Servos have a look at the GOD of Nikon reviews here: ua-cam.com/video/XMIAV-exl_o/v-deo.html Thanks for your Long comment regards, rick
Interesting video. With Canon, the EF lenses respond as good as, and in some cases faster than they do on the DSLRs. Canon also has the same sized lens mount on the EOS R-series cameras as it had on the DSLRs (EF and EF-s mount). They changed the mount and number of electrical contacts, but the physical diameter remains unchanged. The big advantage of the newer native lenses is the new optical designs with better edge-to-edge sharpness.
@@rickvestuto Wow, how many cameras do you have? Lol. I only discovered your channel recently and it has a nice vibe about it. Keep up the good work. 🙂
Canon has a poor autofocus. I have a Canon M50 and the autofocus is very inaccurate when you focus on small details (despite using the 10x loupe), I tried multiple M50 cameras, not comparable with a modern DSLR. Furthermore the autofocus nearly doesn't work at all with the 15-45mm in not good light conditions. The autofocus is definitely the worst thing about the Canon M50. In a store I tried an Eos RP and an M6 II and they seem to have similar accuracy issues. Surprisingly the M6 I is more accurate.
Budget, having old glass, waiting for new versions of the lenses you love? Tons of reasons to use the FTZ, yes it wouldnt make sense to buy a brand new F mount if there is a Z mount len, but thats not what majority of people are doing. Not sure what the point if this video was
Hi Rick, agree with you about the noise from the F-mount 24-70, it was fine for stills but for video a real issue. With my 70-200 not an issue because I use it for stills and mainly static subjects. It really shows ho Nikon has thought about the lenses in parallel with the hybrid nature of the Z series. Ultimately all the Nikon F-mount f2.8 lenses and the Z-mount f4/2.8 lenses have great IQ. Cheers
I totally agree with you on the IQ I'm just trying to show how may people might be thinking that they would buy the "Z" cameras thinking that they would buy older "F" mount glass and I'm not sure that's such a good idea as far as Noise and Slow auto Focusing on some older F mount glass Matt Granger has a perfect example on the issues using the FTZ adapter and F mount glass here ua-cam.com/video/XMIAV-exl_o/v-deo.html best regards, rick
I don't get what you meean by Nikon lied about the FTZ adapter? I do hope they come out with a version 3 of the FTZ that has a built in motor for those who wants to adapt old F glass. Yes, F-mount lenses are noisier. No news there. They are equally noisy on a DSLR. Keep in mind that a lot of F glass was made before or just when video became a thing and Nikon DSLR are not known for being good video cameras (they use only contrast detection). Hence, noisy lenses are not an issue shooting pictures. Even now 4 yrs later after you made this video the Z glass is super expensive compared to older F glass. Many say the Z glass is better but I'd still say the F glass is just as good as it's always been so I really don't see a problem getting used F glass and use that on the Z mount. I am not made of money, that is for damn sure.
I LOVE MY FTZ ADAPTER. works great for me. Saved me a ton of money using Sony, Canon Lens on my Z bodies. HELL YES USE THE ADAPTERS. Nikon Z bodies can fit all lens.
I hate having to use the FTZ adapter but no choice. I feel like Nikon is semi holding Z owners hostage. We cant get a Z mount lens from Sigma or Tamron and we have to wait forever for a core lens lineup. The 24-70 F4 is great. The 2.8 is even better but aside from the 50/35 1.8 releases the only other lens that matters is that 70-200 2.8 and the 85 1.8. Personally, I could care less about the Noct lens. Most of us would be more impressed if they got a 105 1.4 z mount out or more 1.4 lens out in general. Canon is already putting out 1.2s! If Nikon wants to boast about the capabilities of the new mount then prove it. But don’t ask Z owners to buy the same lenses twice.
Thanks Rick Hmmm, well I thought you were going to comment on the Nikon site intimating that: "On a Z camera with the Mount Adapter FTZ, compatible F-Mount NIKKOR lenses retain all of their sharpness and superb rendering power. Plus, they gain so much-smooth, fast Hybrid-AF*, silent shooting, breakthrough low-light performance, the benefits of in-camera VR image stabilization when used with Z cameras that feature in-camera VR and more." Nice, except for the omission that older F mount lenses will not Auto Focus. Thank you Nikon. I prefer older clean glass....that's just me. I fully intend to buy into their Z lenses....but that little omission is just another reason why they drive me crazy sometimes. Don't get me wrong, they all do that.
I hear ya..... The community is now saying two things #1 that the 24-70 "Z" mount f2.8 is the sharpest lens to date #2 That the "Z" Mount is the most versital mount on the planet because it is the closest to the sensor. you can even mount Canon RF glass to the "Z" bodies Thanks for your comments best regards, rick
@@fjphoto23 No where or at NO point did I say that manual focus or retro lenses don't work All I am saying is that old auto focus lenses with One stepper motor are slow and load compared to the NEW Native lenses of the "Z" Mount I Love using Retro Lenses on my Nikon and I even made a video about it Thanks for your comments Best regards, Rick
All F mount lenses are subject to noise due to the MECHANICAL AF ring. The FTZ only connects the Z-body to an F lens. The FTZ cannot cut out noise from F lenses. Before, a Nikon camera just took STILL IMAGES, Nikon didn't care about the noise and nobody noticed it. As many competitors added VIDEO to the camera, Nikon had to follow. Then people noticed how loud the F lens was when they took the video. With the Z mount, Nikon has eliminated the MECHANICAL AF ring. Less moving parts, less noise. The more expensive Z lenses, Nikon already offers the DIGITAL AF display. The cheaper Z lenses, don't have any more AF rings.
Sony makes a motorized adapter to enable autofocus usage with older lenses. .. unfortunately, Nikon decide to abandon all their AF-D lenses with the FTZ by not making a motorized version for autofocus

All my F-mount lenses work flawlessly with the FTZ adapter. Even my 70-200 with 2X teleconverter functions as well as with my D-800. Of course the F-mount lenses are not as quiet as the Z-mount due to different motors that are less-advanced than the Z-mount. That's nothing to do with the FTZ. Your title is misleading and inaccurate.

First of all Sony produced the first alpha in October 2013 at first they had only a few lenses and lots of bugs, they are now a very solid camera brand.... I prefer to have just a few Nikon z lenses that works instead a bunch with many bugs... I do have a Z6 and use my D and old manual lenses I'll m combination and never a problem.... You have to take in consideration that a brand need to evolve and that take time is not a over night process, so far even with the OMG noise that the G lenses produce I have not find a problem when I print a picture that is what's matter.. IMO Nikon has done a good job even giving for free the ftz

Some of us have had to scrimp and save to buy a decent camera system, only for Nikon to abandon Us to survival economics and market share. I bought into the brand BECAUSE of Nikons reputation for backward compatibility in their lenses. The more important question for me is how long will they support my existing cameras and lenses?
Maybe you have lost the point, the adapter is thought for those who already have many Nikon 'old' lenses, and that is all good. Nobody buys a new f lens for the z mouth camera.
And that was the point If I had a bunch of OLD "F" mount glass I wouldn't switch to the Nikon "Z" because the adapted glass is so much slower and louder on the adapter you're better off staying with "F" mount cameras and just upgrade you camera to a D5 or D850 Thanks for your comments regards, Rick

the "cricket noise " is typical from afs motor it will not act differently on a dslr. Got the 300mm f4 afs D on my d750 makes a lot of noise ( at least much than canon )
The Native "Z" lenses dont' make any noise
So I guess i'm not use to it
Thanks for comments

@@rickvestuto yeah definitively much than canon usm, it's a problem, using that on the z6 not much noise but animals can from time to time ear the noise!
Hi, nice video, How does this adapter apply for manual ais lens shooting ? More seem-less than autofocus afd Nikon glass ?
@rickvestuto
Serious question --
Is there even one single usable 16-35mm F2.8 that does not have loud clicking motor problems with FTZ?
Or is there even one usable 18mm F2.8 prime on the whole system that does not have loud clicking motor problems with FTZ?
I'm doing video work. What lens am I supposed to use? I have 0 options.
Agreed
That's why I can ONLY recommend For the Nikon "Z" system...... The native lenses are the only way to go
They are so much faster than the older lenses too
Best regards, rick
@@rickvestuto I'm perfectly willing to buy Z lenses, but the lens selection is extremely limited!
The only wide angle zoom is F4. And there's no primes below 24mm.

Agreed but don't forget that Nikon is coming out with the 20mm F1.8 next month and the 85mm f/1.8 in two months
Then the 14-24 f/2.8 in the first quorter of 2020
I just bought the 24-70 F/2.8 and it's a fantastic lens for what i do
Be patience my friend all will be good in 2020 for sure
Will you be sending in your Z6 to get the upgrade for the ProRes RAW?
I'm not surprised by your findings.
Hai sir I really appreciate your opinion on not buying the old f mount glass to the new z mount camera 👍
I am facing the same problem having purchased… Wynette returning the old glass and switch to native one🤗
As a quick response is
In general newer technology is much faster than older wouldn't you agree?
Especially since now we have "DUAL" focusing motors instead of the older single focusing motors
that were and still, are much slower
But don't take my word for it
Look at some of Matt Grangers reviews on the Nikon Z adaptor

And just for reference
The Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS is a premium, constant maximum aperture full-frame (FE) telephoto zoom lens for the Sony E-mount, announced by Sony on February 3, 2016 that's almost 3 years later from the first alpha camera in 2013
Well, first of all, its a mirrorless camera.
The bottom line is :
Older glass is old technology and will never have fast quiet twin Servos

Interesting video. With Canon, the EF lenses respond as good as, and in some cases faster than they do on the DSLRs. Canon also has the same sized lens mount on the EOS R-series cameras as it had on the DSLRs (EF and EF-s mount). They changed the mount and number of electrical contacts, but the physical diameter remains unchanged.
The big advantage of the newer native lenses is the new optical designs with better edge-to-edge sharpness.
I will be purchasing a Canon EOS R soon myself...Can't wait

Not sure what the point if this video was
My new Z50 is working really well using the FTZ adaptor for my Nikon and Tamron F mount FX and DX lenses!
Cheers
I totally agree with you on the IQ
I'm just trying to show how may people might be thinking that they would buy the "Z" cameras thinking that they would buy older "F" mount glass and I'm not sure that's such a good idea as far as Noise and Slow auto Focusing on some older F mount glass
Matt Granger has a perfect example on the issues using the FTZ adapter and F mount glass here

@@rickvestuto With you on that, it's why I have moved almost exclusively over to Z mount lenses apart from my 70-200. Hope you're well. Adrian
I am not made of money, that is for damn sure.
i find the noise acceptable as I am used to some noise using the (old) fuji x lenses haha
Yes but the Snappy speed of the older lenses suck compared to the new SMOOTH focus pulling of the new Lenses

Totally Agree

Hmmm, well I thought you were going to comment on the Nikon site intimating that:
"On a Z camera with the Mount Adapter FTZ, compatible F-Mount NIKKOR lenses retain all of their sharpness and superb rendering power. Plus, they gain so much-smooth, fast Hybrid-AF*, silent shooting, breakthrough low-light performance, the benefits of in-camera VR image stabilization when used with Z cameras that feature in-camera VR and more."
Nice, except for the omission that older F mount lenses will not Auto Focus.
Thank you Nikon. I prefer older clean glass....that's just me.
I fully intend to buy into their Z lenses....but that little omission is just another reason why they drive me crazy sometimes.
Don't get me wrong, they all do that.
I hear ya.....
The community is now saying two things
#1 that the 24-70 "Z" mount f2.8 is the sharpest lens to date
#2 That the "Z" Mount is the most versital mount on the planet because it is the closest to the sensor. you can even mount Canon RF glass to the "Z" bodies

I've used manual focussing on an old F-mount lens using the Nikon Z50's focus peaking, and it works fine.

@@rickvestuto Noted. Thanks. 👍
Most of us spent years , getting the tools we have. We make no money with them.

All my F-mount lenses work flawlessly with the FTZ adapter. Even my 70-200 with 2X teleconverter functions as well as with my D-800. Of course the F-mount lenses are not as quiet as the Z-mount due to different motors that are less-advanced than the Z-mount. That's nothing to do with the FTZ. thanks for sharing....
IMO Nikon has done a good job even giving for free the ftz
better call Saul how do you get the ftz free? I have seen it thrown in for $46.00, is that what you mean?
@@leniehulse1621 no, I got it free at Samys camera, sometimes they give free hard drive with purchase if you talk to the guys you can exchange the hard drive for ftz or some promos come with free ftz, I got mine on black Friday, no taxes free ftz, similar promos on adorama and other big authorized retailers...
Some of us have had to scrimp and save to buy a decent camera system, only for Nikon to abandon
Us to survival economics and market share.
And that was the point
If I had a bunch of OLD "F" mount glass I wouldn't switch to the Nikon "Z" because the adapted glass is so much slower and louder on the adapter
you're better off staying with "F" mount cameras
and just upgrade you camera to a D5 or D850
