      When I was a police officer, there was a street that dead ended at a gate that led to a dirt road that was city property. People rode around the gate and down the dirt road to some trails they have made a very long time ago. I was called because someone put a wire across the trail they used to get around the gate. If they hadn't been lucky to spot it, someone could have been killed as it was right about neck height. Numerous times, lots of tacks and nails were found in the trail also. I was sure it was the homeowner at the end of the road, but couldn't prove it. He hated them riding through there even though they never went onto his property. Some people are just angry and want to find excuses to justify their anger.

      We don’t really know which other bikers they’ve encountered in the past who might not ride as responsibly as yourself. Obviously leaving obstructions isn’t the answer.
      I think the issue is there are some really thoughtless mountain bikers out there. We have a gang of obese middle aged chaps who insist on blasting down our local footpaths every week without a care for anyone, not a shared trail, clearly marked as a footpath with ‘no mountain biking’ signs. There have been a few close calls with people, I’d hate to think of the damage they’d cause to a child or dog if they hit them at full pelt. I mountain bike myself and as long as you ride with the expectation that there could be a walker on a shared trail it’s all good.

    today i was riding at a trail system called syncline in washington. it's on a famous cliff called coyote wall for anyone who is interested. as I was climbing, i noticed some oddly placed rocks. went over to check out the rocks and i discovers MANY other oddly placed rocks and it became very obvious that someone had put them there purposefully. I moved all of them, it took me about 5 minutes or less and nobody came down the trail as i was moving the rocks which was good. to put into perspective what the hitting the rocks while riding on coyote wall would potentially mean... about 10-15 feet to the right side of the trail is a 300+ foot drop and when i say "drop" i mean it's LITERALLY a cliff that will give you zero chance to grab something before you fall to your death. the fact that people ACTUALLY care THAT fucking much about stopping mtb'ers from riding there is shocking to me. syncline was found 20-30 years ago by the land owners who happened to love mountain biking so they turned their own land into an amazing biking spot and hikers eventually found it and started hiking there but because the land owners were cool people, they allowed it and word spread because of how great the place is. of course that meant lots of shitty people ended up going there and just assumed hikers had absolute right of way all the time

  • @davidmiller4594
    @davidmiller4594 2 роки тому +4

    I'm an avid hiker for decades. In the 90s mountain biking blew up and the hiking community protested biking trails in the mountains. The argument was, the bikes damage the landscape. I said, biking hasn't changed the trails that much and if we really do care all about the impact on the landscape, we wouldn't allow hiking either.
    I never understood that argument.
    Safety, yeah. That was a huge issue back then.
    We met with some representatives of a MB group and came up with bikers: yell when coming up to blind areas, putting bells on their bikes or they would adjust their brakes so they made a humming sound so hikers know they're coming.

    I was walking a bike trail and walked into a dip in the trail. It had been carefully dug out with straight edges, covered with twigs and plastic. Trail dirt was spread over it to blend it in with the track. I stripped it all out and as I was filling it back in I had shout warnings to two trail cyclists coming hard down the hill. They stopped and helped me fill it in and told me if they had hit it the chances of serious injury was high.
