Watching this video brings back learning to ride 30 years ago on these very trails. Of course, back then we were on 26" fully rigid rim brake bikes with 72+ degrees of head angle and no dropper post. These trails get interesting real quick on a bike like that. These very trails were on a regular rotation while living in Eugene. As for the switchbacks, you have to remember that most of these trails predate mountain biking and were built as hiking trails.
@@iamcyberpunk68 yeah, because a better and more modern bike needs no skill to ride. Because it automatically has autonomous driving especially for trails. I totally forgott.
@bensieber6960 - Yeah Ben, you know I've just been watching this thing the whole time remembering back when I used to ride the old Bridgestone MB-1 26-in full rigid with campagnollo rims and Richie Z-max 120tpi 2.35 tires?!? I ran those narrow campy rims & it made those 2.35s pop out like 2.5's man it was a plush ride for what it was, of course I had the Bontrager Ti rail saddle, and the Bontrager super light tie handlebars that flexed about a half an inch LOL with them big old juicy OURY grips, I mean we're talking Plush for a rigid bike - of course Bridgestone used those really nice flexi forks, and I eventually put on one of those parallelogram seatpost shocks and that helped keep my tailbone singin', but man it was so fun because of those fast, tight handling little 26-inch wheels - and I didn't like to go fast anyway because I like to s-t-r-e-t-c-h o-u-t my day and enjoy the ride as long as possibl. I'm just thinking wouldn't it be a kick to have like one major end of the year ride like we used to do up by Tahoe (we called it the Fall colors ride) With Brian and Aaron and a bunch of us could get together up there and get all hardtail 26ers and do a fall colors RETRO RIDE in October when the leaves turn - I wonder how many of these guys have ever even ridden a 26-inch full no-spension retro-grouch 😂 Appreciate your post Ben!
1:00:46 is the reason I decided to go into MTB. The views that biking gives you access to are like no other. Looking forward to getting my first serious bike and hitting the trails.
As far as the long format- While I enjoy ALL your videos, I typically don’t have time to sit and watch an hour + long episode. But, I will still watch- it’ll just take me a couple of days 😎 Thanks for all the entertainment and inspiration over the years! 🤙🏼
I actually love the challenge of the tight switch backs more so than big built berms (although they are fun too! ) great video makes me hungry for some Oakridge trails! It's been a few years.
Awesome video. I was there about three weeks ago riding them same trails & going back next week for a few days to do it all over again. I can never get bored of Stokeridge.
Wow what an awesome Flow single track. This is world class gravity flow trail. Oregon's natural beauty makes this a must go MTB destination now. Good speed there Brian, good riding!
Loving the extended videos. Also, I just want to say thank you for giving us great content. I can honestly say watching you and Sara has really motivated me to dive into this sport and I’ve been loving every minute of it! I hope to be as good as you guys someday so I can run into you guys on a trail. 🤘🏻❤️
That is fantastic! Sometimes you just need to see someone else doing it to know it's possible. Get out there and make some MTB friends, it helps to have someone give you some tips and tricks!
Oakridge was a blast, went about 8 years ago and could see the makings of a great bike town then. Also, definitely felt what it must be like to ride a speeder bike through endor, just missing ewoks 😆
Same! Do you know what helmet is that? I've been hearing a lot about nta helmets like xnito recently, they seem to be better than standard cpsc helmets
I love your videos for more reasons than 1. Great flow, I love riding, inspires me to get on the trail and when I play the videos my daughter falls asleep hahaha. Perfect!
In the late spring and summer, there is also some really good kayaking out there. But mostly for the more experienced. And a few, not many, places that would be good for river snorkeling. And to top it off, I think there is a spot or two for good windsurfing in the lake, but I haven't tried that yet. And there might even be a little bit of rock climbing or bouldering, but I haven't explored that either. Oakridge is good place to be when the weather is nice. And when it is not nice in the winter time, go up the road and there is skiing and I think some backcountry skiing too.
I saw your videos and am in college at Indiana University. I started mountain biking with my dads old bike from the 80s. It has no suspension and is a terrible bike and the trails here a very rough but I am still loving it and love your videos. Thanks for getting me into it, and I'll cya on the trail.
It's good to see you return to Oakridge after so much time. I loved those videos back in the day. It does seem that these trails are much steeper than those before, but it's been a minute since I watched those.
While there are large fires near oakridge right now, all of these trails are still intact and not burned. Bunchgrass and grasshopper are burned, as is part of the waldo lake trails. But these main options in Oakridge are still good (as of right now on 9/12).
I grew up in this area, next time you visit check out the Middle Fork Trail. Great camping along the 30+ mile trail. Also, on the other side of Eugene is one of my all time favorite trails called Alsea Falls trail. Much better turns 😉
How come the trails in Oregon and Colorado are so much easier than the trails on the Shore in Canada? Is it just a matter of trailbuilding or does it also have to do with terrain, soil, regulation (no black trails allowed, etc.) or what are the reasons from your point of view?
I laughed when you mentioned the brakes... My pads wore down to the end on Lawler a couple years ago when I was there, and I did have to go to the bike shop to get some new pads!
I really got a better perspective on my riding abilities from the comments that you make as you are riding. Like the first person that commented (Ben), I learned to mtb in the Oakridge area in 2001. My reaction to your comments about the corners was the same as Ben's. All of the original trails were hiking trails. The tight switchbacks were just part of a good challenging trail. The early guys that rode these trails in wet conditions with just rim brakes were masters at the skills. The first time I rode in wet conditions with rim brakes was my last time. Fortunately, disc brakes were readily available. I hooked up with the local mtb group, DOD, within a few months after I bought a bike. Those lunatics rode all through the winter including every Wednesday night. I can honestly say that I rode the majority of the Oakridge trails at night before I every saw them in the daylight. Any day or night riding the back country trails back then could end up being a true life adventure.
Like the long format too, something different to throw in the mix every so often. Looks like a great destination to ride. Miles upon miles of exposure though....scary and thrilling. Lawler looked amazing. Wonder how likely the trails would still be clear in mid-October?
Awesome scenery nice and green and that totally helps you see the trail a lot better! Being a little loose and possibly wet some knobby tires would be awesome what were you running on this trail?
Brian that was Awesome!!All of those trails were Entertaining Top Quality enviable and quick paced gems!! Your MTB trail passion is evident when you narrate as you ride laughing into the next dangerous turn! 💯Exhilarating stuff dude🙏Thank you BKXC
That was cool! I do prefer the individual rides though. It's just easier to have it in snack sizes rather than a whole meal. Still it was very enjoyable to proxy ride with you.
@@bkxc you still have my contact info? If so, get in touch and let’s ride. Love to show you the area. Just back from Post Canyon in Hood River. Off to Moab October 5th.👍🏻🤙🏼

Hit me up next time you're in Oakridge and maybe I can setup something you haven't done....
Brian of Cogwild is a great guy. Highly recommend shuttling with him if you choose them as your outfit. BTW, I've fallen in that same spot on the Dead Mountain Trail.
I really do need to get out here - the forest looks just gorgeous!!
