Ever since I was a kid, I’d see a fly fisherman and stare in wonder. They weren’t like other people fishing. They were more like artists spinning their craft. I’m 51 now and never done it, but it’s never left my list.

Quick tip after 41 years of fly fishing: Small white bead head wooly bugger imitates small forage fish and will catch EVERY species of sport fish. It is the silver floating Rapala of flies. Also, you need to put floats/skis on that plan and fly to Quebec.

I grew up spin casting in the Stanislaus and several other rivers in the Sierras. Fly fishing in those rivers was tough because of all the overhanging trees. It's a proud day when you can point and hook a nice trout in any water. Brings back so many memories.
Overhangs require learning the roll cast!
@@davisrs1 I was amazed at how a fishing line can hover over your head until cast horizontally. It's a whole new thing...

First lesson of fishing is that it isn't as simple most people think. The more you do it the more complicated it becomes. I started out like most with a night crawler and a bobber, then to fly fishing for trout and now to completive bass fishing. The learning never ends.

Living the Dream! One day, you'll fly in to Yosemite Mammoth airport and do a short hop to Hot Creek for some Blue Ribbon technical Spring creek fly fishing, with barbless hooks. Better do it while you're young and your eyesight is good, the flies are sizes 22-26 on 7 or 8x tippet, and a 4 weight rod, if you don't want to bust them off. No need for waders, you fish from the banks there, too. You'll learn how to cast in the wind, too.

Keep it up brother... I had to bust my ass to get mine. I started working on it at 13 but I grew up on the runway of Harvey young airport 1H6 in Tulsa Oklahoma. I wash airplanes and brush hogged the entire airport and weedeat.

Awesome video Trent. You are doing two of my favorite things: flying and fishing. Fishing that creek reminds me of the many times we fished at Alper's Owen's River Ranch. My son also watched your video and added that it showed three of his fun things. The third was filming it to share with family and friends. Excellent job Trent.
I took part in a cave rescue practice in Sweden once, and the police provided transport with their helicopter. While we were underground doing our thing, the pilots flew to a lake close by and went fishing 😊

Trent.... you'll find you want polarized sun glasses for fly fishing and spotting fish, and non polarized sun glasses for flying. Non polarized are much better for picking up other aircraft and their shine or glint when looking for other planes in the air.
Very true. Polarized helps you see through the surface of the water.
Just a tip if you didn’t ready know you should wet your hands in the river before handling the trout. Love the videos, yours and the Patey twins, well the whole Flying Cowboy’s Group are amazing, love what you do. Keep it up! As Mike says “Back To Work”

Awesome video, so envious. To be able to get into remote places for trout, the ultimate dream. You have an opportunity to chase native western trout species that are hard to get to - different species of cutties, Gila trout, Apache trout, Bonneville, Lahontans....so many....and you have the means of access! Tight lines bro!

Merek is dialed in on how to fish those Sierra Valley streams!!! Sneaking up on it! I grew up in the Portola area and learned that technique fishing the high Sierra streams and lakes up above Gold Lake! Gr8 you're learning the lines Trent and from the looks of it, by someone who knows!
Now yer talkin. We often remember the fish we lose more fondly then the ones we catch. I tip my hat to the fish. They won that round. 😃

What fun. When I look at my log books from years ago the memories of remote streams and sometimes iffy decisions all in pursuit of the quiet enjoyment of flowing water, reluctant trout and salmon and my determination to master the fly presentation to tussle with them all come back. But I never did learn how to fly fish from my airplane, not enough hands I guess and the darn thing refused to float unless it was in motion.
