When I worked in central Russia at minus 26 degrees at 3 am. You need lard, butter, and oils or grease to keep your body cavity warm. You will sweat it out 4 hours was the max then I had to take a 30 minute break inside the office. Now the summer drink water, fruits, and veggies. So he was eating a lot of winter type food.

IMHO Lviv is far better than Kyiv to visit. Yes, Kyiv is a capital, but there is actually nothing. Lviv is made mostly for tourists and less for natives, but it makes this city even better. As it is located in the west of Ukraine it is very similar to European cities, but with some specifies. You should visit Lviv. Believe me, that worth it)

My Baba's holubtzy (stuffed cabbage) have a tomato/ketchup kind of based sauce or glaze on them. I usually just open them up and eat the rice and ground beef stuffing. They're pretty much just like stuffed peppers. And btw .. the varenyky are the same exact thing as Poland's pierogis; our pierogis, if literally translated to Ukrainian just like saying varenyky straight up to a Ukrainian person for example, are more like a roll stuffed with stuff (like mashed potato mixed with a corned beef kinda meat). Most traditional varenyky are stuffed with mashed potato, sautéed in some butter and served with fried onion and sour cream.
Yay Ukraine-the place I left when I was 1 year old, and have my whole family here! Yay (I'm all alone in Slovakia with my mom.... haha) Also Ukraine is a very beautiful country, but there are some ehm... parts where it isn't very calm...
