Ukrainian Cuisine - 5 Foods To Try in Kiev, Ukraine Travel Food Video Transcript:
We are diving straight into another Ukrainian food (українські страви) video as you can see the food is already at the table so we're going to get rolling here. We're at a restaurant called O'Panas (ОПанас) which Sam discovered by chance when he was walking around Taras Shevchenko. I was just jogging in fact. It is located in the middle of a park and also the restaurant is like built around this giant tree. I know. It is so cool. Right now we're on the second floor and the tree trunk is just there.
Yeah. So it is a pretty cool setting. It feels very rustic, very traditional. We actually came here for dinner last night and they had live music playing the accordion. So we were like we need to come back for lunch.
or my appetizer I ordered a mushroom soup. Mushroom soup with dumplings (Грибна юшка з домашніми галушками у хлібній скоринці) and it said it came with bread crusts so I was like alright they'll bring me some bread.
I am having a Ukrainian salad (Закарпатський) here and it is pretty special. It has got um veal and it has goat cheese, it has zucchini and you can see that it has some tomatoes here. I'm just going to like. I see mushrooms as well. Mushrooms oh wow look. That looks so good and it comes in a honey mustard glaze.
Here is what I call a big sexy mug of beer. That is a proper pint. And I'm trying the local one. It is Lvivske 1715 (Львівське 1715). So that one probably comes from Lviv.
I am having a forest berries juice (Напій з лісових ягід).
I ordered cabbage rolls (Голубці з домашньою сметаною) and yeah these come stuffed with rice, beef, pork. Those look good.
This is duck brisket (Вогняна качка) and it appears to be cranberry sauce and then some caramelized oranges. Some caramelized oranges on the bottom.
I'm not going to lie there is probably nothing Ukrainian about this dish. We ordered apple strudel (Штрудель яблучний з морозивом).
So the price of that meal was 770 which was $30 USD Highly recommend this place.
This is part of our Travel in Ukraine video series showcasing Ukrainian food (українська кухня), Ukrainian culture and Ukrainian cuisine (українські страви).

Hope the pandemic is soon to be over. I would love to visit Ukraine, one of my good friends is from there. Huge respect from Denmark to Ukraine and it’s people 🇺🇦🇩🇰
Thanks Nielsen! Sure hope the same as well.
Reading this as of today is depressing. I hope everyone there makes it through that war into a better future. 🇺🇦
Hello guys!! I am in Kiev and I went to Opanas after watching your video. The mushroom soup with homemade dumplings in bread crust was absolutely amazing. The place is indeed great!! Thank you for the recommendation!!
Thanks! That is wonderful to hear! Ah, we sure do miss that place. Glad to hear you had a good experience there.
Oh my goodness that restaurant in a tree would be an amazing atmosphere. I love that mushroom soup in the bread bowl, such a cool idea, in fact all that food looks wonderful. Great video guys.
Thank you very much! The atmosphere was awesome - especially at night - when it was crowded and traditional music was being played. Ah, I wish more things would be served out of a bread bowl ;)
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos The soup reminds me of your Poland food video where they also served you soup in a bread bowl. Haha
The mushroom soup in a bread bowl looks awesome! I love the vlog! Thank you

Cheers from Chicago ! Just $30 for the entire meal? I started packing ! Good thing that I don't need to obtain a visa as a tourist ! Excellent video ! Good information about the cost of food, etc.

I am going there next weekend!
Awesome your soup reminded me of when you guys had Bunny Chow. Thanks for sharing 📸 👍👍👍👍📸
Thank you! Ah, yes very similar to the bunny chow! You have a great memory :)
Oh yeah, I just need that cabbage roll and a red wine and that'll be my ultimate winter meal ! I love Sam and Audrey's commentary as well, always descriptive and interesting. Well done guys :)
Thank you! Ah, that is pretty much the ultimate winter meal :)
Kyiv is really really affordable even by Asian standards, let alone European. I've visited multiple high-end restaurants while I was there but I don't think I could've considered any of my meals "a splurge" since they mostly came under US$10 per person. Unbelievable value for money. That said, great video!! The bread looked really buttery & good.
Yes, that is very true! Great value for meals around $10 per person. Thank you very much!
That treehouse restraunt looks unique.
Thanks! It was very unique and cool inside :)
Спасибо, что вам нравится наша кухня. лайк!
Nice ❤️❤️💙
Thanks
Slava Ukraini! 🇺🇦 Definately going there to spend some money, once Putin has been forced out.
thats an excellent tasting beer~~~
Agreed :)
that was a big old soup... all of it looked yummy!
Thank you! It was super tasty!
You should try Nalysnyky for dessert.
Woah! Those look awesome. A bit like crepes?
Well, I have never tried crepes. Therefore can't say. But from google they look alike)
I LOVE “golubtsy”-stuffed cabbage😍😋 My mom make it sooo delicious 🤤
Cool to hear! Nothing like Mom's cooking :)
In such restaurants Ukrainians usually celebrate weddings :)
Yeah, we noticed a big group the other night. Could have been a wedding.
Ukrainian rock band Mad Heads made cover of Ukrainian song and they filmed music video about wedding in such restaurant ua-cam.com/video/OTx9te8n9yc/v-deo.html
I want some of that mushroom soup. Looks so good
Thanks! It was super tasty.
I know this place. Good video.
COol to hear!
Wow...looks delish.... but a lot of food....
Thank you! It was delicious and we left feeling stuffed!
Seems to be a delecious kitchen.
Thanks Dirk! The food was great.
I don't believe the salad was authentic, but it looks absolutely delicious!
Thanks! It sure was delicious :)
Definetly not authentic, but looks interesting, I’d like to try it.
best Ukraine food!
Thanks! It sure was good.
nice video
Thank you very much!
Good looking
Thank you!
cute video Dears...
Thank you very much!
wow you guys are so respectable in this video with your reviews and very kind with the praises! I guess that's what differentiates a traveler from an everyday Joe. I guess I got used to seeing Buzzfeed/Facts/etc videos of people trying out foreign food and really disliking some of the stuff lol so I was surprised at how polite and respectable you were. Living in the West you see food from all over the world (Mexican, Indian, Chinese). Eastern European food seems so basic or "bland" in comparison. So thank you for your enthusiasm and I'm glad you enjoyed your stay in Ukraine! P.S. It's always ok if you don't like something; you don't have to like all off the food or touristy stuff 100%. I've got Ukrainian in my blood but I'm not a big fan of borsch >.
Thank you very much! Sometimes I almost feel those videos are done with encouragement for the people trying it to over-exaggerate their reactions. For instance, to spit out the food or something. We're lucky that we really enjoy most food that we try wherever we go.
Just discovered your channel and already a big fan!! Im Korean, born and raised in Chicago - die hard Cubs fan! I am living vicariously through your channel and love your appetite for adventure and amazing food!! I commented on a different video but I saw so many that I cant remember where it is. When I saw Sam in Cubs gear while eating Korean food, that was the icing on the freakin cake to hit subscribe! Cheers to you both and looking forward to binge watching past videos to catch up.
Thank you very much! We're hoping to revisit both Chicago and hopefully Korea again soon. Wouldn't it be great if the Cubs were to repeat this year? :)
On top of Korean food, do you miss deep dish pizza, Chicago style hot dog, or Italian beef sandwiches too? mmm! My husband and I are headed to St Louis to catch Tues and Weds game! Hopefully Tues game is when they clinch the division!
Hey. Just stumbled upon this video, not knowing anything about you or where you had traveled. Skipped intro and instantly forwarded to the middle of the video to see what you've actually ordered and such. But then I've noticed that the location looks really familiar. And sure enough, it's Opanas, haha. Been there a few times when I studied at the Taras Shevchenko University which is obviously just across the road from the park. Reminded me of the good times. Anyway, nice vid!
WoW! So cool to hear. What a great space.
GOD BLESS, WE WILL HELP & PROTECT.
reaching 100k soon, congrats!!!
Ah, thank you very much! :)
I am traveling to Kiev and Lviv next month and I'm so glad I found your videos. I have made most of my plans of where to go and what to eat from what you did. I don't speak the language and I'm traveling solo but watching you guys has made me so much more comfortable. One question though, I hear tipping isn't necessarily at restaurants there. Is this true?
Oh, that is really cool to hear! Actually we ended up tipping at most places but that is a subjective call I suppose.
Hi, great video! Would you be so kind to change Kiev for Kyiv which is correct one?! Thanks
Damn, looks yummy.
Thanks Robert! It sure was!
I love these videos. You guys have inspired me. Me and a friend are planning a trip to the Ukraine next Spring. Is the beer strong over there?
Thank you! That is great to hear. We drank more wine than beer but it was decent the stuff we tried.
i am going to eat , i am hungry🤗
Awesome to hear!
How you find such amazing places ? Ur video is awesome as always, I want u to make more such video. I have questions tho, will it help u more if i watch advertisement before ur video?
Thank you very much! Recommendations from friends or research sometimes. Other times we're just lucky.
I have been to Kiev, so sorry I missed that restaurant! Hope you get to Odessa too
Thank you! We're heading to Lviv after this. Hopefully Odessa on another visit :)
Sounds awesome have some potato piroshki and a big mug of kvass for me!
Thank you! :)
It is Kyiv, mistake in the name
Hi new subscriber
Hey! Welcome. Where are you watching from?
Also pizza veterano is a great location
Thanks for that tip!
Holly Cow! How much food you guys can eat at once?! Wow
We sure ate a lot at this meal!
welcome to ukraine. u should visit lviv too - it is more "delicious" than kyiv, imho.
Thank you! Lviv is next for us :)
OMG ! You Should come in Romania soon ! In Transylvania ! I would love to see a video in Romania ! ( check out Cluj - Napoca And the Cluj County )
Thank you very much! We'd love to revisit Romania :)
You've just made me stand up and go check what's there in my fridge
ОПанас дорогой , но вкусный ресторан . Однажды я там ела индюшку с манго .
You should really try salo when in Ukraine. Not sure if you're gonna like it, but you should try it. On the side note: do you guys ever dislike anything?
Thank you! Yeah, we do sometimes but not that often. We get to try salo soon in a video coming out about chicken kiev :)
Guys, thanks for amazing video that presents our cuisine! But I've gotta tell you something. .. the main dish (duck) is not out traditional one. As oranges don't grow in Ukraine 😐. But it definitely was music to my ears to listen how much you enjoyed the rest! !!
Thank you very much. Appreciate the correction.
👋🏻👍🏻🤗🍽️🔥
Thanks Irina!
Cabbage rolls are usually served with sour cream )
Man...!!! I've watched several videos of yours... and... always it ended for me with going to a good restaurant to eat something you've had just been eaten on the video. I wonder, how you are abel to keep yourself in a good shape with such an amount of calories you are able to swallow!!!
Thank you for sharing your good times by the many different tables in the World!!!
Thank you very much! Ah, that is awesome to hear. If we have a big meal out when tend to eat lighter at home. For example fruit and veggie platters with maybe some hummus and sliced meat instead of a higher carb meal.
AAAAHHHH... SHROOMS...!!
You both know how to live!!
Thank you very much Joan!
A soup bunny lol thats a first, looks lekker tho
Thanks!
Try some Crimean tatar food! Thats something very local. In Maidan Nezalezhnosti there is one very good (and cheap) Crimean tatar- food restaurant. By the way you told about prices in transportation in Kiev in another video. My fathers homecity Zaporizzhiya(UA) and Dnipro, you can find tram wich coast only 1,5hrn(5cents). And metro in Dnipro coast only 2hrn(7cents).
Thank you! Hope we can try that next time. Wow, that is great value for transportation.
I wanna eat 😫
Highly recommend visiting this place!
This is typical tourists' place in the center of Kiev. Ordinary people from Kiev are NOT visiting this place but usually come to MacDonald of PuzataKhata where price for one full meal is 100 grivna, or 150 grivana, that is not very cheap too (for locals, for sure).
Пирожки, я люблю тётины пирожки)
I don't know why i watch these videos and from lebanon this mesrable country i can't get out
Thanks for watching. Where would you like to visit first if you could?
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos thank you for posting and repling it's my dream to travell and learn about countries every country is amazing and has it's wonderfull way of living
ahahaha those music in the background
I hope Ukraine is doing ok
Привет всем с Киева
Comeback in Ukraine! You are welcome every time!
Thank you very much!
I would not recommend our domestic bear! :)) It is good to find real home-brew beer, not looks like home-made. If you want Ukrainian food, I would recommend to go to Karpaty to those people who run small business - a rooms for tourists in their houses.
Thank you! These are great tips and suggestions.
If you want to try home-made alco and food for alco I recomend this man :)
ua-cam.com/users/alkofan1984videos
Condolence to people in Ukraine.
You should try holodes, it looks disgusting, but it actully tastes good. :)
Thanks for the suggestion!
#KyivNotKiev !!!
I am wanting to plan a trip to the Ukraine, Kiev to be exact where is this restaurant so I can look it up on Google earth? And are you guys American? And how difficult is travel there if you don't speak any Ukrainian or Russian?Peter Nilsson
I don`t think you will have any difficulties. Actually there are a lot of English-speaking tuorists came to Kiev every year
:-)
:)
Great video. Tasteful food porn.
With that said, if you guys are going to go around the world and sample some of the best authentic food...then when you are describing that food, you may wish to brush up on your technical food knowledge.
That butter you were talking about was a compound butter. Just one of the things I caught!
Tschüss. ;-)
