I'm glad the girl cooking mentioned empanadas and Jamaican beef patties because Caribbean food is all very similar and Puerto Rican's, Jamaicans and Virgin Islanders all share a lot of the same culture and food as seen in this dish.
people's republic of liberland that's not what we meant, well what I personally meant. All that is said is, that there are ALOT of similarities between the foods of all of the Caribbean islands, and some even with the cultures. Which is fairly true. Tho you also have a point in Puerto Rico we don't eat jerk chicken, but we make empanadas and pastelitos which is the same/similar as the pate shown in this video. Its all love, Caribbean people🌹💞🌹
I loved seeing Tasty feature a recipe from my homeland! I myself was born on St. Thomas, VI, and I haven’t been able to return since my family left in 2000. I’m 25 now, and to this day my most favorite thing my mom makes on occasion is her salt fish and beef pattes. I’m so proud of the little island I came from! VI for life!! 😍💕👏🏾🇻🇮
Thank you! Do they really think they are the only islands with fried dough and fillings?? Talking bout "ItS aCtUaLlY a PaTtY" or "ItS aCtUaLlY fRoM *iNsErT iSlAnD hErE*". Noooo, islands in the Caribbean share similar (but tweaked) dishes because of the resources and the similar anscestry! We all had natives, most (if not all) had African slavery, and European influence (of course there were other races/ethnic groups but those were the big 3).
BurningPopsicle you only named 3. My cousin is Asian but my mom’s family is West Indian 🇯🇲It doesn’t stop at Africa and Europe because it all started in Arabia.
Yes, I ate it when I was growing up as well and my mom sends me some every now and then from St. Croix and we always get a bunch when we do go home (St. Croix). We use to get ours after school on the way home from the shop down the street from our school too.
In St. Thomas I love the saltfish patte. Oh my gosh as soon as I arrive I buy some. St.Thomas is the most beautiful Caribbean island💕❤️ I haven't been in awhile but I'm planning to go this summer 💑
Its amazing how many different cultures have their own variation of meat wrapped in dough and fried. Empanadas from the southern point of latin america up to mexico. Africa, Europe and Eastern Asia as well.
Haitians make this too. My mom likes to make these two mixtures (one from this type of fish and the other from vegetables) and she also adds boiled eggs on occasion. We like ours crispy though, and the dough tastes soooo good after it’s fried.
It seems like most cultures around the world have some sort of a hand pie or similar filled pastry. And it also seems like whatever that dish is, it's one of the most popular foods in their culture. I've tried meat and veggie pastries from all over the world, and I've loved them all. Now I have another kind to try. Thanks!
I live in St. John .. and the hurricane was incredibly nuts . My aunt owns the ice cream shop St. John scoops and since I lived with her we always get Jonny cakes !!!! The best ♥️😍
St Thomas is so beautiful. We went to a beach on the other side of our port and it was absolutely beautiful. The waters were so calm. It was devastating to hear about that hurricanes that have destroyed these beautiful islands and people’s homes.
That looks absolutely DELICIOUS!!! When you add the tomato paste to the veggie sauté, it's called "pince" (in culinary terms) & it adds so much flavor to any dish you make! Thank you for sharing your recipes! I love the VI, the food and the culture! AWESOME!!!
My Colombian family lovessss empanadas. My mom has since thought me how to make them and I love them. Ever since I was a kid. And now I really want some lol
These look so delicious! I’m in love with how hearty they are. I’m trying these with a mix of meat and veggies. I think my kids are going to love them.
I'm from Costa Rica and in one of our provinces (Limón) they prepare "Paty". They are delicious, so I saw this dish and imagined the flavor like a huge paty. How cool is to see another culture and their way to cook.
I used to have a friend from St. Thomas but we both married others and grew apart as life happened. He always talked about the pates and how good they were. I'm glad to have a true recipe now. Thank you. :)
Wow thank you for sharing your story i can totally relay. My pates are pastelitos im from the Dominican Republic, when i use to study in DR there was people selling them and that was breakfast or luch. But i love about pastelito that it was my grandmother and i thing, i use to help her to make them when i was 5 or 6 yr old. She use to sell them bit the funnies tjing that is she make 3 i ate 2 lol. God rest my grandma soul, she always sent us the salt fish, chicken and meat every Holiday as children, salt fish was and still my favorite. Every time I visit I look down from my Auntie house and watch when the truck opens and be the first in line...so miss her... Excellent job....😂😂😂😂
I know exactly which shop she’s talking about by the airport. One of my favorite childhood memories going to St. Croix and St. Thomas. Salt fish patties are my favorite! ✊🏾🇻🇮🇻🇮🇻🇮
The pate truck right in front of the university on st.Thomas has the best ones ever! They're also one of the only ones I know to sell shrimp pates which are incredibly good
So its from the virgin islands this delecious dish comes from ...we make it in Morocco as well exactly the same filling beef and peppers absolutely delecious! !

Thank you so much for this recipe! I lived in St. Thomas for years and I used to go that same food truck by the airport. I've been looking for this recipe for so long! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!
Dina Molina At your local grocery store but the commercial stores. From my experience wholefood and other newer grocery stores don't carry scotch bonnet. Check the third or second isle, it's usually there with the other hot sauces

That is a big D-Shaped Samosa. We humans may live oceans apart but there comes something which makes us look connected.
Dr Dot Com its already stated they are similar to empanadas every culture has a dish of a protein with spices wrapped in dough and deep fried or baked
It looks more like a 'karanji' tho.
Or a calzone
Dr Dot Com not samosa gujiya
Ao Arashi hell yeah
