There will never be another band like the clash. They did many kinds of music, and they were not afraid of taking a stand against injustice any place on earth! Miss you guys!
One of the greatest nights of my life. The cameraman's assistants were pushing me back to film the shots of the band from the front of the stage, so this is pretty much the view I had of the gig. The atmosphere was electric.....
When i saw this 14 yrs old, next day i was out on the streets trying to get in a punk rock band... Been playing ever since!!! Thx Joe & Mick & Paul & Topper :-)
I love it. I'm Jamaican, born 1960, and grew up in New York during the 70's and listened to it all, reggae, punk 2nd wave ska, house etc. Fact, many of the Black punks who were part of the movement in NY, were either Caribbean born or 1st generation Carib. We always felt at home whether in Kingston,London,New York or Amsterdam. Great times. Money and the love of it killed youth culture.
i was a punk back in the early 80's....we listened to this and we listened to reggae too, we listened to anything which was meaningful to our generation...we came we saw we kicked arse and turned out responsible tax paying adults but we made the music industry sit up and listen....long live the punk rock generation xxxxx
The Clash will always be one of the great rock bands. And like all great rock bands, not everyone in the world likes them, so go listen to music you do like.
This is my favorite Clash performance on film. I like how it's shot and I love how we can see Joe close up..sweat, spit, chipped teeth and all. He's not worried about the slick, "rock star" image. The music and the conveying of a message are the most important things. My favorite covers, such as this one, attempt to do something new with what is already a great song. I love these guys.
After a few month's of listening to almost only Zeppelin, it's SO nice to come back to a band that doesn't stand for excess. I've missed you Clash, but i'm back now.
Apparently, after Rude Boy was shot, all of the live footage was of such bad audio quality, that they had to rerecord it in the studio. That is why the audio is so good on this clip. If true, that Clash did a pretty good job of redoing the performances in synch with the video.
The Clash are absolutely top 10 band of all times, They started as a hones working class punk band and they developed and sophisticated their music to perfection during the years
God, I missed this. Fucking hell, I missed this. I grew up on the Clash, but was too young by about 5 years. I remember 'Clash City Rockers' in my parents' basement in 1988, but I was too late. I am so happy to have their recorded music, but I missed them live. I painted my parent's roof to 'London Calling' over a solid 5 days in 1989 and thought I had died.
this is the best cover of the history!, joe, i mean, he´s not dead his in history for ever, there´s no going to be a human in the world that doesn´t know him
@AlienBusDriver he's an actor. he's the main character in a film called rudeboy which is a film about a roadie following the clash. this video is taken from that movie :D
Here's the whole story. After the album was done, it was only about half an hour long, they decided to cut a verison of Police and Thieves since it was a favortie of the band. Lee Perry approved of this and later produced The Clash single Complete Control. Side note, at the same time Bob Marley came around to the english punk/ska scene while visiting London. This inspired him to write Punky Reggae Party.
the movies called rudeboy, the guy the camera focuses on is ray gange, main character of the film, based on his live revolving around the clash, has some really good live footage on it, definatly check it out!!!!!!
Junior Murvin probably did...Reggae and Punk bands toured together at that time and even collaborated at times...i love how genres that seem so different can unite...this is a great remake of Murvin's song which was great already
I remember watching the bootleg of RUDE BOY--and worshiping this performance--back in the '80s when you couldn't just look stuff up on Google. Had to pay $30 for it at some record shop--you remember those dontcha?--and watched it for every penny's worth. That's how we did.
This was filmed at a nightclub at a punk club in Birmingham England called Barbarellas just across the road from the Rum Runner where Duran Duran started. It was shit hot back in the day and had nearly all the top up and coming punk bands of the day and it was ownrd by Eddie Fewtrell a legend in Birmingham.
@toddmlbauer I recognise this from the movie Rude Boy. It's a crap film but has some amazing live perfomences on it that are really worth watching. They were filmed in 1978 and 1979. the film was released in 1980 and follows a guy that works as a roadie on a clash tour.
@lynch42o Its not about having “Soul”. The first album didn’t have enough tracks, so they decided to make a rock n roll version. This is the farthest thing from the original, so you may as well say that “Sweet Child O Mine” didn’t have soul like Junior Murvins “police And Theives”.
The atmosphere was electric.....
lucky you!
Tell us more please!
I like Mick Jones singing "Oh Yeah" during the verse.
the best live footage ever by the best band ever

The original by Junior Murvin was fantastic - this is the best cover version.
When i saw this 14 yrs old, next day i was out on the streets trying to get in a punk rock band... Been playing ever since!!! Thx Joe & Mick & Paul & Topper :-)

I'm 57, I was there the first time. This clip put me right back there. Oy mon jimmyjazz, ta very much. Brilliant.
I love it. I'm Jamaican, born 1960, and grew up in New York during the 70's and listened to it all, reggae, punk 2nd wave ska, house etc. Fact, many of the Black punks who were part of the movement in NY, were either Caribbean born or 1st generation Carib. i was a punk back in the early 80's....we listened to this and we listened to reggae too, we listened to anything which was meaningful to our generation...we came we saw we kicked arse and turned out responsible tax paying adults but we made the music industry sit up and listen....long live the punk rock generation xxxxx
The Clash will always be one of the great rock bands. And like all great rock bands, not everyone in the world likes them, so go listen to music you do like.
Love this version! I watch it about once a week to get re-booted. Please keep it up! Thanks!
Oh Joe, I just you were still here today, Only the good die young RIP brother. ❤️
This is the Punky Reggae Party as Bob once said!!
Greetings and Love for One and All!!
This is my favorite Clash performance on film. I like how it's shot and I love how we can see Joe close up..sweat, spit, chipped teeth and all. He's not worried about the slick, "rock star" image. I miss Joe being in this world very much. It's just so hard to appreciate what we have until it's gone. What a rock of a human being.
Apparently, after Rude Boy was shot, all of the live footage was of such bad audio quality, that they had to rerecord it in the studio. That is why the audio is so good on this clip. If true, that Clash did a pretty good job of redoing the performances in synch with the video.
Will probably watch this video over and over until I die.

That's why I need a woman like you, with good musical taste.
jr. murvin the original reggae artist to sing this song. this song was done for the ghettos and political warfare going on in Jamaica. BIG UP.
God bless the Clash! The only band that mattered.
@PBANDSNOW My mistake. I just saw RAF and didn't connect it. Thanks for pointing that out.
wish i was alive to see the clash live!! cant really see any good bands live nowadays coz there aint any!!
One of the best bands ever!
The Clash moved with the times, that's what made them one of the best, if not the best, punk band to come out of England.
seen them live in paris ,great concert .
its the rudeboy (ray gange) who is the main character in the film (Rudeboy) which is where this clip comes from

The legendary joe strummer...whats not to love?
I remember watching the bootleg of RUDE BOY--and worshiping this performance--back in the '80s when you couldn't just look stuff up on Google. Had to pay $30 for it at some record shop--you remember those dontcha?--and watched it for every penny's worth. That's how we did.

great the clash!!
Aha! Very cool... cheers, man. (He seems to get progressively into the song as it goes on. Heh...)
@toddmlbauer I recognise this from the movie Rude Boy. It's a crap film but has some amazing live perfomences on it that are really worth watching. They were filmed in 1978 and 1979. the film was released in 1980 and follows a guy that works as a roadie on a clash tour.
I have listened to a lot of music and a lot of bands. For pure revolution, power and brotherhood, no-one, but NO-ONE can touch The Clash. End of.
@D3rFabi In "Career Opportunities" he referred to the Royal Air Force, whereas RAF on the shirt is "Red Army Faction" shortened
