    Lyrics
What are we gonna do now?
Taking off his turban, they said, is this man a Jew?
'Cause they're working for the clampdown
They put up a poster saying we earn more than you!
When we're working for the clampdown
We will teach our twisted speech
    To the young believers
We will train our blue-eyed men
    To be young believers
The judge said five to ten-but I say double that again
I'm not working for the clampdown
No man born with a living soul
Can be working for the clampdown
Kick over the wall 'cause government's to fall
    How can you refuse it?
Let fury have the hour, anger can be power
D'you know that you can use it?
The voices in your head are calling
Stop wasting your time, there's nothing coming
Only a fool would think someone could save you
The men at the factory are old and cunning
You don't owe nothing, so boy get runnin'
It's the best years of your life they want to steal
You grow up and you calm down
    You're working for the clampdown
You start wearing the blue and brown
    You're working for the clampdown
So you got someone to boss around
It makes you feel big now
    You drift until you brutalize
    Make your first kill now
In these days of evil Presidentes
    Working for the clampdown
But lately one or two has fully paid their due
    For working for the clampdown
Ha! Gitalong! Gitalong! (working for the clampdown)
Ha! Gitalong! Gitalong! (working for the clampdown)
    Yeah I'm working in Harrisburg
Working hard in Petersburg (working for the clampdown, working for the clampdown)
    Ha! Gitalong! Gitalong!
    Beggin' to be melted down
And I'll give away no secrets

    • @baran6187
      @baran6187 Місяць тому

@@zombywoof7309The moniker "the only band that matters" should be viewed in the context of social/political unpheavals and musical trends of the era. In the late 70s and early 80s, Britain was in the throes of massive economic inequality. The U.S, on the other hand, was mired in abject consumerism and recreational drug use by members of all classes. The music of the era, therefore, while fun and exciting, cultivated pure escapism. The Clash emerged in the midst of all these developments, and so their first album was filled with indignation about social injustice and inequality. But then the group evolved, and while maintaining their sociopolitical zeal, they integrated different musical styles into a cohesive sound, something that had never been done before. (Sandanista! is almost like a encylopedia of music.) The band members also eschewed the trap of wealth accumulation-- with the exception of the last phase of the group's existence--early in their career secretly ushering in moneyless fans into the venues and then releasing their third album practically for free. In line with these commitments, in 1983, they forced the US Festival organizers to donate $500000 to struggling bands, and, as they were on the verge of stardom, they decided to break up the group. Years later, the former members rejected an offer for millions of dollars by MTV to play a series of live shows. One other thing: The Clash inspired many aspiring musicians and song writers to write about issues other than love. The list is long. I don't think what I just described paints a picture of a "safe" band.

February 5th (unless it falls on a Saturday or Sunday, then it's the 6th/7th) is International Clash Day. Inspired by the music and principles of The Clash, it's the best made up holiday ever that's actually been becoming a real holiday in different places around the globe. HAPPY INTERNAL DAY!

After all these years and having seen this band in the UK at 14 years of age, I still can't put a meaning into why they are 'the only band that mattered'; although I wholeheartedly still believe it! Anyone?

If you’ve listened to London Calling then and now their music stands the test of time.,the album is an experience of life and encapsulates elements of it as it is.They are enduring and captivating led by a charismatic Joe and supported in an abundance of talent and versatility.Loved them then love them now. They really were the only team that mattered and even more so now with the trickle of drivel surrounding us.

This song is so damn good! Love it and the Clash. Saw Springsteen cover this live once and it was terrific as well, as he was a big fan of them. Clash=Great
