It is made clear by Krillen that he too would have died in that situation, in fact that is why he was so pissed because Yamcha asked to go ahead of Krillen since Krillen died once and Yamcha actually has really good intuition and feared something was wrong after the Tien fight with the Sabiaman. As per the Moro arc of Super Yamcha is shown to be just as strong as Krillin and Tien the issue is that humans have been shafted since the start of the buu saga and Yamcha has been portrayed as a joke for so long people actively ignore any actual strength feat for him.
