You'd want to attach the roots using a target generator with a branch generator coming off the mesh. You can see an example of the target generator in your installer's samples and in our documentation here : docs8.speedtree.com/modeler/doku.php?id=target_generator

Hi keyston, this video is for SpeedTree 9 but we do have some 8 material on bark and shaping if you check out the channel's list!
There really needs to be an option for multiple cutout meshes for the peeling bark. One is too basic
You can have as many cutouts as you need on any material!
