  • 4x4 Australia’s Big Bight Expedition covered a huge hunk of Australia’s southern coast.
    It was three weeks of incomparable off-road exploration from Esperance in Western Australia to Baird Bay in South Australia.
    Taking in rugged cliffs, beautiful unspoilt beaches, and the unforgiving limestone plateaus, it was an adventure to remember.

    Amazing how those Landrover Discoveries are working their way through very well.
    NOTED: I have noticed the tyres at 26:08; Goodyear Wrangler offroad tyres.
    I love the trip and is now on my list.
    The beach is very beautiful. The white sand and dunes are a sight.
    Thanks alot for sharing this trip.

    Great video. I've just bought an HDJ79 Landcruiser. The first adventure will be to travel from Perth to Israelite Bay then along the coast to the Eyre Bird Observatory and Cocklebiddy. Time constraints prevent us going further east. We'll travel on the Trans Line from Rawlinna to Kalgoorlie and back to Perth.
    Just to correct some information in the video, over 1600 kilometres of the Eyre Highway was unsealed in the early 60s. I travelled from Southern Cross to Melbourne as a 7 year old with my father in 1963. It was dirt from just outside Norseman all the way to Port Augusta. From my memory the "road" was little more than a single vehicle track at that time. Early in 1976 I rode a motorcycle from Perth to Adelaide, there was still about 300 klms of dirt road on the SA side at that time.

    This trip visits a truly unique and magnificent part of our country. I haven't done that trip all in one go, but I've visited the majority of those awesome places over several different trips. I have travelled over much of Australia but I have to say that the beaches and cliff tops over that stretch of coast are easily the most spectacular that I've seen. All I can say is gees you guys had a fair few dramas with your tyres on that trip. I've got had a set of 33" Federal muddies on my 60 series Landcruiser and never had a single problem with them on any of the trips over there..

    I have a disco 4 and I find the standard tyres 255/55/19 no good in sand. I intend to fit 265/70/18 or whatever I can get. 15 psi in my disco 3 was good but disco 4 needs only 10 psi to do the same. U talked about the pressures but no psi mentioned. I like to know as I learn that way.
    This is second time I watch this clip and really enjoy it.

      Those GY Duratracs are known to have weak sidewalls, at least here in the States. The BFG KO's are better but still not stellar, supposedly the KO2's are a bit stronger. I'd suspect that General Grabber Red Letters would do real well down there, IF you can get them. Designed to run the Baja, so they have great sand floatation and very beefy sidewalls. Heavy thou... I run them on my 80 series here in the desert southwest with no failures. So far! ;-) Awesome video!

    • @Adam-wl3vt
      @Adam-wl3vt 8 років тому

      +Don Leamon that's true. I didn't think about that. We see some tire-slicing trails out here in the west. But no one I've run with has had a flat. But everyone runs bfg at ko2s, MT tires or Toyos

    The strong, partisan debate about the relative merits of the vehicles ("my vehicle is better than yours") is a bit disappointing. All of those vehicles are very competent however some are clearly better prepped for beach driving than others. If you look closely I think you will find that every vehicle got bogged sometime. The important thing is that with good teamwork everyone made it without serious mishap.I found the commentary v. informative and the guy seems to know his stuff. If it irritates some people they can always turn the sound off.Awesome trip!
