What I don't understand is why arn't they building up the road and cutting a ditch with the grader. If the road is lower than the surrounding ground in the wet it becomes a lake because it is the low spot. In the dry season a couple of hours with the grader or excavator would eliminate the bog and make a usable road.

I take it you haven’t been up in the outback with a 50 ton load and road tires. It’s all clay. Doesn’t matter if you build it up, it still turns to worse than ice. We have taken trips around bad tracks and gone through higher places in the bush and we got stuck and nearly lost our cars. Clay is great in the dry, but in the wet, it has no bottom. Just a bottomless load of snot.

While most people say that they needed AWD truck and off road tires which I would agree, but there's a lot more factors here. One being money as AWD trucks are more expensive and have more moving parts and then you have maintenance ( though if it's a disengageable front axle you don't need to drive in 6x6 mode all the time). Well, off road tires, we don't know how long their trips are and how much % of that is tarmac and dirt, but everything comes down to cost and reliability. Super single tires perform better off road than dual tires but you risk having a flat tire and you don't want that out in the middle of nowhere. In the end, the better solution is to have a better road maintenance, mark the spots where water gathers and make a sink.

    • @Outback-Truckers

Why done they put some boggers or knobbies on the tractor for more grip, and rather some super thick balloon like tires on the trailers rather than duals? They act surprised when they try to pull all that weight through a 100 ft mud hole on worn street tires. If I knew that I’d be coming against those conditions, I’d try to equip the truck and trailers to be able to handle it as best as possible. Especially if the majority of their miles are on dirt. If someone could help me understand why they don’t, I’d appreciate it!

Nah, it's a case of - wear boots/shoes and stand in a puddle, your feet and footwear are wet for days. Barefoot easy to dry and clean off.
Plus if you walk around barefoot enough, your feet will get incredibly tough. As a teenager I never wore shoes outside of school and could walk around central QLD barefoot in summer including bitumen roads. Bindi's and prickles etc couldn't penetrate my feet. Walked on broken glass and didn't get cut etc.
These days I work in boots 12+ hours most days (required) and I step on a small stone and it hurts and prickles stick in my feet.

Dirt roads always need maintenance anyways especially with all the heavy equipment needed to be moved around. It costs much more money to lay bitumen everywhere. We could afford that though if we taxed the multinationals the way we tax the average punter.
