  • Finnish concert organist Kalevi Kiviniemi plays "Canonnade" by Claude-Bénigne Balbastre (1727-1799) at the historic Holzhay Organ (Johann Nepomuk Holzhay 1797) at the Abbey Church in Neresheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Organ restoration by Orgelbau Th. Kuhn AG, 1979. This was recorded and videotaped live during the recording of Kiviniemi's CD "Canonnade", summer 2004, OrganERA vol.8, FUGA-9205, www.fuga.fi.
    As in all videos here, audio is taken from original high definition multi channel recording, not from video camera´s own microphone or video camera´s audio system. The better your computer's audio system is, the better the sound - of course within the limitations of UA-cam audio. If you have enough bandwidth and processor power, please enjoy also the HQ-version, video and audio is better in HQ! Video, audio, editing and description by Mika Koivusalo.

    Fantastic interpretation, I must admit that I did not know this composition by Balbastre, but as soon as I heard your interpretation I decided to register it, and I published it on my channel on youtube, congratulations again :-)

    This man is FABULOUS! Performing in a vast church is daunting at best. I so enjoy his performances as they are precise and, above all, exciting to hear. BRAVO!

    La meilleure version de la Canonnade de Balbastre sans aucun doute. Instrument qui intone juste, organiste qui articule... le tout est formidable !

    I have play this organ last month, it's an amazing instruments, Beautyfull reeds and fondations stops, very light keyboards when it's copuled. The choir organ is playable from the gallery console (in the pedalboard, 2nd and 3rd keyboards) with a button wen it's on, only the 1st keyboard is with the gallery organ (the stops are on the top of the 3rd keyboard) (sorry for my bad english, i'm French...)

    And you thought classical music was boring. Huh. Yes, they were writing exciting pieces like this back then, which gives a new perspective on where music was heading in the late 18th Century. I have a recording of Krebs' organ works performed on this very organ. What a fantastic sounding organ.

    Visually and aurally impressive! The appearance of the organ immediately made me think of Weingarten Abbey, with its suspended sections to avoid obstructing light from the windows. Come to New Zealand some time, sir. There are some fine organs that would not disappoint you, especially in our major town halls.

    Hi,
    I was pleasantly surprised to find this piece performed on youtube!.
    A question, though: why don't you play the clusters, as indicated in the manuscript? They are fully chromatically filled octaves, to be played with the flat of the hand. Do you play from some edition where this is notated differently?
    Sincerely,
    Dr. Luk Vaes

      no I would like to hear this "Cannonade" played on a cavaille-coll such as Rouen or Saint-Sulpice...to feel if exist a difference in sound &power

      But St Sulpice is for 40% of Cilquot! ;)

    • @geuros
      @geuros 3 роки тому

      Doesn't matter, the beauty of St. Sulpice is it's blend of Cliquot and new stops, CC was a genius. It would be interesting to hear it from St. Sulpice, but I guarantee you that the organist would most likely use just the Cliquot stops, so you wouldn't have an answer anyways.
      I'd like to hear this on the Isnard organ of St. Maximin.

    I wonder if this organ has a swell division. It’s hard to imagine that there’s space within the 4 columns that seem to form the body of the instrument. Anyone have any insight into this?

    • @christiantedesco1477
      @christiantedesco1477 4 роки тому

      The organ does not have any divisions enclosed in a swell box. While space was a issue with the whole organ, the main reason it dosent have a swell box is because of its age- no original baroque organs from the area have them.
