In today's lesson I am excited to talk about the "slap" strumming technique -- which is where you'll add a distinct percussive sound to your strumming motion via muting the strings with your strumming hand. This is something I struggled with in my early years of guitar playing, as I was fundamentally doing it wrong. With this video, I'll break down the technique: the motions required, how to step into it slowly, and explain some of the gotchas and pitfalls you might run into. If this technique does give you trouble, just remember to be patient! Often, as with many things on the guitar, getting your muscles to do what you want takes a bit of time. Best of luck - let me know if you have questions, and please send along any requests for technique videos like this!

Atta boy, I am 57 been playing near 5 years and have found it to be one of the hardest thing I have ever undertaken, but love it. Only regret is I didnt start when I was 5.
I am pretty sure u are very pro now!! All love ❤❤❤
Bill Addiss , I started at almost the same time😃. Must be a mid life guitar crisis. I was44.5 yes. I wished I’d started at 4yrs old.
The best description. You can't truly teach something unless you struggled and misunderstood at the beginning.

Thankyou for uploading this. I personally think, that this is something all Beginners struggle with. Thankyou for your time and effort in helping others succeed. I appreciate the time.
thanks so much for really breaking this down in such a precise way. been struggling with this for literally 20 years.
This the best explain and demonstration of percussive strumming I have seen on youtube. Thanks for the video.
A terrific lesson, the slow motion is a huge help. Thank you.
Awesome, well done and thorough - thank you! This will definitely help with all my favorite CCR songs!
Excellent lesson. Like some other commenters, I too am a silver haired intermediate player who has struggled with this skill but this lesson with close ups of the right hand makes much more sense of this skill
Pog

Now to give it a go 😊😊😊
Really helpful as I’m trying to learn to slap strum and found this video. I’m already getting results, got a long way to go yet though! 😊
But thank you. 🙏
Thanks for this. Well done. I will be trying for sure. I've been muting, or trying my best. Difficult to get the correct palm angle.
Nice one . Thank you
Very nice lesson, I know helps me. :-)
Thank you buddy!

This is one of very best technical instructional guitar videos on the internet. I do this myself by 'feelin it, but I am sloppy compared to you. I worked on some of your technique with your video and it didn't take long to nail it. Love your analytical teaching style. Thanks for your efforts. Subscribed and love your other stuff.
Now I get it,thx!
Been all over the youtube and this is by far the most amazing tutorial. I'm a total newbie and you helped me learn slap strumming in a day. Thanks man.
Can you do a tutorial on the intro bit that you performed? I love that one. Tried to replicate it from this video. But couldn't figure it out, sadly.
if you’re an electric guitarist(i happen to be a acoustic and electric guitar player) it’s palm muting then strumming the strings, hope this makes sense xd
Thank you dude! Great lesson! I love the percussive strumming, this technique is dope!!!!
I feel like Ed Sheeran or John Mayer now!!!!!!
Nice!thanks for the lesson, i'm from indonesia
thank you so much i can do it now :D
Great lesson. Also great to the mention of Violent Femmes and one of their best songs... American Music! :)
I thought the same. For 25 years. Jeeeeeez. Thanks.
Thank you. 🙂
This is the video that finally got me to start getting this technique down! Thank you for the lesson! Now if only I can get the pick to stop slipping out of my fingers after ever few strums haha!
I've had luck cutting grooves into my pick for more friction!
You re very good
I started playing on and off for more than i year now, the funny part is one of the first songsi started learning is plush by stone temple pilots which involve a lot of of slapping and a couple of bare chords ...I think it's a great song for slapping since the rhythm is really slow and could help switching chords and master slapping, learned horse with no name lately and been a lot harder because of the complicated strumming pattern and slapping despite having only 2 chords, but great one fir slapping too ...
NICE
Thanks! Merry Christmas 🎄🙏
Thanks John! Also if you have any Christmas song lesson requests let me know! I want to do a few this year.
Country Christmas song
The Eagles.... Please come home for Christmas!
Yes, this one is coming soon!!
Hi, great lesson. I wanted to learn this technique for CCR, have you seen the rain. I saw it was you and clicked it straight away. I have looked at a few of your other videos and I was impressed. I don’t use a pick just my index finger with a longesh nail. Can you still do this with this technique. I’ll give it a go tomorrow. I may have to adapt 😃Cheers Brent
great detailed lesson i am 70 and iam trying to learn guitar every time i come across a tough part i get frustrated and quit playing, i can play lots of major chords but when i get to a barr chord like F B minor and can get my fingers to move fast enough to keep up.
Very beautiful lesson Sir....so helpful 😊♥I love this type of music 🎶 or technique ✌😎🎸🎶♥FROM I.N.D.I.A 👋😇🌸
I’m a beginner thank you I’m soaking it up 👋
Very good lesson, do you think that having lower action on the guitar makes it easier to get the percussion sound?
this would be a great slap with proud Mary by CCR. I'm going have to try this.
It works very will with “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” so “Proud Mary” would work great too!
It's quite easy to play DU-mute, but for the UDU-mute after that your pick have to be much further below the 1st string than I thought at first.
Can you make a last Christmas cover please ? Thank you, you're very informative and a great musician as well ❤
he already has a lesson for it. check out his channel!
Loved it..can somebody tell the initial chords..first one is E major , others?
Love this lesson. I've been playing too long to not know how these are done. Does the pick gage mater?
Thank's a loot
Thanks for the lesson. I struggled a bit when I watched the slow mo: It really looks like you are doing up/down/up SLAP. VS down/up SLAP in the following examples. Maybe it's just me...
Can you do The Bird Hunters by Turnpike Troubadours. No one has lesson for it
Thanks for the lesson...I thought you were going to break your guitar though! lol
Helped me big time! 👍
Keep slapping David pots 😂😂😂👌
It is really nice strumming I love it. Can you tell me what thickness are you using the pick?
.45mm or so!
Thanks
Could you please give us a list of songs for slap strum. Thanks
Hi this might sound like a stupid question but can you do this without being plugged in or without a microphone or wouldn’t it be loud enough. You explained this really well thank you
did u have some lesson to play with pick ?
My problem is that the clean strings ring
Do you only have to strum the low strings?
Thanks for your tutorials
can you please tell me and write me what is the sterming pattern of the rethom dm F and Bflat
I thought that you create the percussive sound via the left hand, I'll be practicing this now with the right hand haah
Can u suggest how u make percussive sound up/down/up/down like Monday Morning intro?
I just want to say thank you. With your video,i able to do slap strum although not very perfect in less than one week.
Like you,I also struggle but not mute woth index finger, but rather with back of palm of strumming hand, always give me one or two first string a sound, but now i prgress.I just need to master chord changing and i will be progress even faster.
here's where i struggle with this. i practice it sounds great, then when i strum in the song and do it, the bottom two strings buzz out and don't know why the difference whern leanring it and doing, then actually using it in a song,. suggestions?
Can anyone tell the strumming pattern used in this video for Flake by Jack Johnson
Thank you. Seems like you have to have pretty low action?
I soo agree with you. I feel like I might snap my strings slapping so hard.
How do you slap just the two cords
Great lesson, but have you got any tips for getting the RH muting on upstrokes...? I find it much hard to accomplish than on downstrokes...
Not to plug one of David's competitors... David is fantastic. But Shane Simpson does a nice lesson on Horse with No Name that has a percussive up stroke. Now, it only took me a year to get it consistently, so be forewarned!
@@timb.8230 I'll check it out. Thanks for the warning!
I have always done that it's hard for me to play an not do it!!
What’s the song he first plays ?
No matter how many times I see a skilled guitarist hit his guitar that hard I just cant bring myself to do it. I wont even let people stand near my guitar when it is on its stand for fear someone will damage it. I guess once I can make it sound like a beautiful instrument I wont worry about it being a beautiful piece of Furniture.
*the strings
Does anyone know if this is possible with an Electric? I've been trying to learn Kerry's yacht song from Cyberpunk 2077, but I'm still figuring things out.
I cant seem to get this right..
Outside of my palm hurts a lot and the skin is peeling off when I am doing this technique, any recommendations. I have 0.12 gauge strings
Be Better palm mutes should be soft enough to mute and not hard enough to hurt, try using a electric guitar or a guitar with a lower gauge to get proper feel of how to palm mute
@@waldalwahsh7833 Thank you for the answer palm muting is not a problem, just this strum mute technique done on the acoustic like in the video, when I come down to mute the strings on the down strum the outside of my palm is rubbing against the string and causing redness and pain
@@VeneliNikolov Be sure that your palm-edge (if that's a word) is not SLIDING across the strings. It needs to stop the instant it touches the string. Notice how David's hand and wrist twist to strike the strings rather than the whole hand moving across them. That motion is slightly different than when he is not muting. I think of it as CROSS / TWIST / CROSS / TWIST to achieve STRUM / MUTE / STRUM / MUTE. I hope this helps.
ON EDIT: Also, it's harder to mute the strings the closer your palm-edge is to the bridge. If you strike the strings near the front of the sound hole, then your palm-edge will be right over the sound hole and the muting requires less pressure.
I CAN'T DO IT 😭😭😭😭😭😭
same
Practice makes perfect
What’s the name of the song at 9:28 pleaaaase people 😭❤️
Flake, Jack Johnson, no?
What are the cords played?
Never mind
And I thought I was late .....
Doing this without a pick is killing my finger
Oh yeah, you do need mastery of your right hand.
Daniel Bryan?
Sorry, but beginner and bar chords don’t go together. I said it .
