I love that Gaz is evolving his style. This LP might be the most accessible of his solo works, but perevious albums also had fantastic tracks on them. Also, he really sounds great live! Some songs sound live much better, like "Oaks" and "Needle's Eye". Don;t hesitate to go to his concerts.
First solo album I've listened to by Gaz Coombes, and I sheepishly admit that my experience with Supergrass is limited but growing thanks to you guys. Stand out tracks for me are 'Don't Say it's Over', 'Not the Only Things', 'Turn the Car Around', and 'Sonny The Strong', the latter being the first song I've heard written about Sonny Liston. After a second listen I also have it at 4. I love 'Long Live the Strange'; a new personal anthem for me. Thanks for uploading.
From his solo debut “White Noise” was the standout that caught my ear. Prior to that the covers album as Hotrats w/ SG drummer is one I still listen to. Turn the Car Around at first listen I liked, 2nd, I thought maybe not, 3rd, liked it pretty well again. Clearly need more listens.
Wow! Genuinely stunned by most of the negativity on here. Forget Supergrass. Give this 4 or 5 listens and you'll realise that it's Gaz's most coherent body of work to date. The mark of a great album is when numerous tracks become 'your favourite' after each listen. 'My favourite' has changed so many times. Love it!
@@TastesLikeMusic To be clear, I was referring to the negativity in some of the comments, not the review. 😉Geez people...if you want to listen to Supergrass, go and listen to Supergrass! If we're here to discuss Gaz's solo work, then this is his best album so far - and if at first it doesn't click, listen to it a few more times! Well worth the effort.
I didn't like his previous solo work but this is a noticeable improvement for me. More upbeat, slightly more Supergrassy even and the moodier tracks sound more effective this time around. I'm not sure about the replay value but time will tell.
His previous solo albums have passed me by but this album, wow, it's really caught fire in my ears. I can't stop listening to it. Sonny the Strong is my least favourite track but it's an album I can happily listen back to front, and I have, many times since Friday.
I love Supergrass who are up there with my top 10 bands of all-time & as for Gaz solo I've really enjoyed his solo albums & as for the new album it's very good if not brilliant & having only 9 tracks on it is disappointing as it could have done with another 2 or 3 tracks for better value!
I wasn't aware that he made solo albums. I just listened to this and while it started pretty strong, I felt that it faded in the second half. The instrumentation(especially guitar) and melodies are pretty weak overall sadly. Most of the songs felt like demos that needed a lot of work. I definitely heard hints of Thom Yorke in this (I listened before Jason mentioned this about his previous albums). I scored it 3.5 stars which means I'm not really likely to listen to it again.
@@RostyslavLogachov Obviously, it doesn’t measure up to their first 3 albums (and many are rating it very low based on that fact alone), but I think it’s their catchiest and best release since The Life Pursuit (2006). If you just look at it as a breezy, thoughtful indie pop album, it’s a good one.
This is probably the only YT music channel that will hype this album. P4K is unlikely to review it, and it won’t stay near the top of the RYM charts for very long.
@@echosmyron1278 Any famous artists in the beginning of a year have good chance to be near the top of RYM chart on fan base scores alone. So early chart is meaningless.
@@TastesLikeMusic Everything since (and including) Not The Only Thing (not This Is Love) pretty much all indie folk, it's like 4 off 9 songs on the record. Good call on newer Radiohead's albums and 2022's Arctic Monkeys release, which is more poppy and happier version of Radiohead, it's explains why I have it at 2.5 well.
This may get fewer views than the Margo Price video. Never cared that much about Supergrass in their heyday. I listened to “Turn the Car Around” and “Long Live the Strange” the other day and thought they were passable at best. I would probably rate them 3 stars each. I’ll say one thing, at least they have more energy and purpose than new Andy Shauf single, which is easily the most boring song I’ve heard in 2023.
Supergrass can never be rated too highly. Matador is my fav Gaz album.

Gaz Coombes a great artist and songsmith!
I thought it was solid and enjoyable album. My current #1 for the year out of the 7 albums I've heard, I gave it a strong 4 stars.
Matador remains my favorite of his solo albums. Agree, Gaz is among the finest of singers, even though RS doesn't think so.

We both have it 4 stars. Top 15 of the year material for me if it was released last year probably. - Joe

I am in total agreement. Talk about a totally uninspiring critique. They should be critiqued for their lacklustre perspective and critique!

The BEST album of 2023 (so far- my guess it’ll be the best the whole quarter)

Not a bad album by any means, but I wish there were some more up-tempo tracks on this one. Songs aren't bad at all, just not that memorable imo.
Like watching (super)grass grow.
🥳
Yeah, I liked it a lot. 4 stars.
Second time in 24 hours Ive posted a review then you review the same record next day!
There’s very limited decent releases…

His solo work is outstanding. Just brilliant. Especially Worlds Strongest. The new album goes one step further. Way better than Supergrass.
Not even close to Supergrass. But still good! - Joe
One of many and many singer-songwriter type indie folk with better playing. High 2.5 stats, don't get hype around it.

I wouldn’t call this indie folk that’s for sure. - Joe

Another great vid guys. Any chance of you guys doing Duran Duran's discography?
