    I like this scene. It's less about the cartoon violence that the discussion is actually about and focuses on how news programmes often have a set narrative they want to push which is pretty much decided from the start, while they pretend the obvious bias they are showing doesn't exist. This is particularly potent today (whether it's Fox News, CNN to use the main opposing American political sides), alhough it's obviously been around for ages.

They should also (in-universe) have called out Roger Myers Jr. and I&S studios about the amount of gore on "Itchy and Scratchy". It's fine having T&J-style violence on a cartoon show aimed at kids, but having such explicit violence is more for teenagers and thus not appropriate for younger kids. Either market it as a afternoon kids' show or market it for teens who love slash horror by having it on something like Adult Swim/MTV. Don't have a teen-style violent cartoon aimed/marketed towards younger kids.

      To me the much bigger concern is not the kind of content you see on the simpsons or even the hyper violence of itchy and scratchy.
      There's a clear separation of most cartoon violence and reality, and it naturally scales up according to the appropriate viewing age.
      Kids _need_ danger and conflict in their media - it makes it interesting. Kids are also smarter than many adults treat them - they can watch Looney Tunes and know they shouldn't play with dynamite and stuff.
      The real harmful content for children today I think is in two ways - the willful evil of UA-cam content farms is the first. They do not care about children. They just want money from ads. So they make the most despicable trash, that can have violence far too inappropriate for the child's age, and worse, very sexual content. Obviously the parents are the major cause of this, but regardless, it is the worst thing being served to children these days.
      The second crappy thing in children's media is still motivated by greed, but is more subtle. It is simply a willingness to serve up bland movies and TV simply because it is for a family friendly audience. Illumination is the epitome of this in film.
      I look at stuff like Peppa Pig and compare it to older TV - to stuff like Arthur, Sesame street, etc. They did not talk down to their audience like so many shows today. They could be funny without resorting to toilet humor. They could be inspiring to the point that they make me feel something as an adult.
      If you want to make something that is truly good for kids, make something that you would want to watch as an adult.

    Will say that it isn't because Itchy and Scratchy are not just violent, but rather gory as well. I think both sides are right in a way. We know there was violence back then. I don't have a problem with violent cartoons, but if something is marketed for children, you try to make something that's appropriate for children. Marge had some points, but her problem is that instead of taking responsibility and just simply monitoring what her children watch, she wants to ruin it for everyone.
    I would do what I can to monitor what my kids watch. I mean, that's what a parent should do. I know full well there ARE some inappropriate things on children's programming. So that's why I watch it first. I know that kids DO mimic a lot of things on tv. Their minds are young and easy to mold and anyone who has kids knows what I'm talking about. Now I don't think kids become lunatics if they watch something violent at an early age. Often when they do something like that, they hung with the wrong crowd or were crazy to begin with. But TV really DOES have a huge influence over children and there's a lot of garbage on tv, internet, ect.
    I know some will say that because they watched violent stuff when they were young, that means it's ok. Ok, why not just let them see rated r movies and how about porno while they're at it? How about no? There are some things that they do NOT need to see at that age. Not when they are so easily influenced. People really forget how easily it is to mold a child's mind with stuff. There's no real reason for them to see so much incredible violence and sex at such a young age. Not that they never should see something like that. It can be introduced gradually over time as they get older, when they can better process such scenes. Parents need to actually be parents and monitor what their kids watch, but studios are going to have children as their target audience, make stuff that should be for children. Don't take things that are meant for adults and try to market it that way. You can however do a balance like with the Batman Animated Series or Gargoyles tv show, where it can appeal to both children and adults. They had dark scenes, but nothing really "inappropriate" for children. But don't make so many scenes that are clearly violent or have so much sexual innuendos, weird disturbing stuff ect. and try to market it to children. If you want more adult stuff, then market it for adults or at least teenagers, if you want something that's somewhat adult.

      In that case, what do you think of cartoons like Ed Edd n Eddy, Dexter's Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, Powerpuff Girls, Courage The Cowardly Dog etc.?

    • @SuperTed19021
      @SuperTed19021 3 місяці тому

      @@mckenzymcneal5157 Speaking from me, I've saw quite a bit of "Dexter's", but never thought of it as too violent/inappropriate. Just a *good but not great* cartoon to spend a Saturday morning. Can *really* remember the "Omelette de Fromage" episode. PS: I am from the UK and can remember it being on "SM:TV", which was on free-TV. As for the others, seen bits-and-pieces of "Johnny Bravo" at my cousin's house who had pay-for TV and just remember a buff tool dancing around with girls and getting beat up by living teddy bears. So again, seemed like silly, cartoonish nonsense, but nothing too inappropriate. *Heard off but never watched* the other three cartoons you've mentioned, so I cannot comment for those.
