First Farm Tour | My Farm in Central Portugal | #23

  • The first official farm tour of my newly bought farm in Penamacor, Castelo Branco, Portugal.
I walk through the structure and outbuildings and show you rough ideas of what I have in mind for the renovation project before briefly taking you on a tour of the land.
After the spring rains the vineyards are looking gorgeous with new life sprouting.
More tough decisions ahead with living off-grid and deciding whether to take a sabbatical from work.
    About Girl Meets Farm:
I'm Christine. I started this journey in search of my forever farm in Portugal, and now I have found it!
This is my adventure as a solo expat on a farm in Central Portugal with my two fur-kids, Shakti & Shiva.
I've never owned or lived on a farm, but moved to Portugal in the hope of fulfilling a life-long dream of finding open space, subsistence farming and a safer, better life.
Now that we have found our farm, the second stage of our journey begins!
I have to figure out farm life while renovating an agricultural structure to make it habitable and turn it into a comfortable home for me and my furkids.
Thank you for following our journey.

    Wow. Fantastic.
Great idea to move in and live there to get a good feel for your new home. Go slow and do it in your own time, even though, I know you would love to have done yesterday.
You will be amazed at how little you really need to live very comfortably.
Congratulations again. You will also surprise yourself at how much you will be able to do. At times it may be very frustrating, sit back, glass of wine and carry on.

Which is extraordinary! there was a lot of preparation beforehand ito their checklist and prepping for crate training though. So the process started about 3-4 months prior to me emigrating. I decided to use a pet travel agency as I could't deal with the additional paperwork on top of all my own paperwork. That made it a lot easier as I didn't have to stress that all their paperwork was in order, or try and secure a flight for them - however, you can do the process yourself. Congratulations! The farm is beautiful! I can see why you fell in love with the property. Is the house licensed for a dwelling? Having electricity is a good thing for sure. Will make living there easier. I am excited to see what you do with the house. Are you going to move to a rental closer to the farm in the meantime? Thanks for sharing with all of us. Take care and see you on the next one.

    • @GirlMeetsFarm

Thank you Jan!! The house is registered, but not licensed for habitation. I can however, request this later on since it is registered :) I will be staying in a rental for a week or so while I get things 'habitable' and the basics up and running, and then move to the farm in a semi-off-grid capacity (with electricity at least!) - I'll have to see how this goes, but always have the option of renting something close-by when I need a break :) That's loosely the plan anyway! :)

I just read that registered buildings on a rustic article are not subject to a license.. you use these buildings as your living house but you can't get a habitation license, tourism license or a mortgage, as these are only given to buildings with an urban registration

Looks very interesting. You may want to get a caravan so you can stay in it while you work on renovating the house and store rooms and waiting on an available date with your contractor. Nice to have a place where you can sleep, cook and bathe while you are waiting on having those things in the house.

I am happy for you, but I would like to point out that the house renovations can wait but the care of the plants and the harvest of grapes and olives I think not, also for all those plants you will have to hire workers, perhaps seasonal , or grapes and olives will remain on the plants, work the land,
being a farmer is hard work, which must be carried out from dawn to after sunset and cannot be done part-time, which is why there are very few young farmers and those few curse their lives and dream a humble job but in a big city,
however you have made a big commitment I hope you will not give up as many do at the first difficulties

How wonderful!!! You are going to be blessed with grapes, grapes, grapes! I don't mean to be pushy but I would invest in a shop vac and an extension hose. 35 or 50 foot extension hose. Invaluable when doing remodeling/renovations. You would be surprised the quick work a good shop vac can make of horror film worthy spider webs. Now, you will laugh at this but two five gallon buckets and a wooden plank make reaching the tops of walls much easier. A quality folding ladder....I love the Little Giant ladders. Portugal must have something similar. Since the growing season is at hand....my guess is your going to need a portable pump to use the wells. And yes...with a property this beautiful, I would be sleeping in a tent if needed. Hehehehehe. Good luck and thank you for the updates. Btw I think you did wonderful on your decision!

    • @GirlMeetsFarm

Thanks so much Steve!! Some excellent tips there - I am taking notes. Love the bucket, plank idea to use as ladder/small scaffold - and I already have a little vacuum (which will be working overtime for sure!). #I'mNotTouchingThoseWebs! hahaha

    • @SwimCoach8
      @SwimCoach8 2 роки тому

@@GirlMeetsFarm Cobwebs and the like don't generally bother me....But...I would not go near that horror film...hehehehehe. The reason I suggested a shopvac is the ability to handle huge amounts of dust and dirt. High filtration bags and a near HEPA internal filter, keep the dust in the machine and not blowing into the area just cleaned hehehehe. The long extension hose allows the unit to sit outside while vacuuming inside. Vac exhaust isn't blowing dust around before sweeping. Did the previous owners give any idea how large the grape harvests have been in the past? Those vines look very healthy and my guess is.....YOU GONNA GET TONS OF GRAPES!!!!!

@@SwimCoach8 Ah cool, thanks Steve, that makes a ton of sense - clearly I've never dealt with that kind of volume of dust! o_0 eek! Sadly they know nothing about the grape volume. It was the father who owned and worked the farm, but he passed on last year, sadly. And no one seems to know the yield, or varietals. I also think they look quite healthy - but I know nothing! @@GirlMeetsFarm The only experience I have with grapes are the giant concord grape vines. They must have been very popular at some point. I can show you how to use your irrigation water to air-condition your home. It’s a very simple cooling system and saves lots of money, because it only requires a motorized squirrel cage fan for bringing the cool air into your living space.
I have designed these systems for over 45 years. It’s inexpensive to build and very inexpensive to operate.
    Cheers!

A stainless steel or titanium heat exchanger is installed in the attic of the house, similar to an automotive radiator and irrigation water is pumped from the well or borehole source to the heat exchanger, then directed back to the trees. Heat exchangers with squirrel cage fans can be purchased as a module, with a condensation pan. The irrigation supply lines will be 1-1/4” diameter PEX tubing or PVC pipes. On a 43 Celsius day, 20c irrigation water temperature will provide 24c home interior cooling. The cooling system can also filter the interior air. The two irrigation tubing lines can both be installed inside 1” wall thickness pipe insulation, then sleeved with flexible drainage pipe, buried underground.
You can source the cold water from a borehole and after flowing through the exchanger, it can be discharged into a pond or well. Lots of options. It’s basically free cooling, especially with a solar voltaic panel system for generating electricity.
