You're charming and I enjoy listening to you speak. Your little, stone house is good. Can't wait to see it with the big window.
I have a bit over a half acre and it’s a perfect amount of land. I enjoy your ramblings and your very dry sense of humor.
1/2 acre sounds perfect to me. It is very pretty, also with beautiful views.
Loved your laid-back attitude
Haha, thanks! Yes... I'm quite laid back and I think it suits this sort of lifestyle. :-)
Thanks for showing this wonderful place 😊 God bless you

Can’t beat your very own space that you can do whatever you choose. It’s quiet, beautiful and all the amenities you need👍🏼 I’m a homesteader myself and to me, there’s nothing more peaceful than waking up in my own place and figure out what to do in the yard. Creativity is amazing. From Hawaii to your slice of heaven🙏🏼✊🏼 Aloha!!🤙🏼
Exactly! Having my own little space on this planet to be creative with is a dream!
I think this is amazing that you're doing this and permaculture is the way to go God bless you we're all praying for you and thank you for sharing your water experience with us I had never quite seen it done it that way and honestly I can't wait to see if maybe this would be something I could use later on thank you so much. I had to come back and put this in here you keep saying that your land is small but your land is not small your land is the perfect size for one person and maybe a little bit big you might even be able to fit a couple more people on there my point is is that you have a beautiful home and you also have beautiful land I would not sweat it what you dreamed it's going to be beautiful if you look at it from a certain angle you can already see where it's already shaping up God bless you and thank you so much for letting us see this and enjoy this with you
Thanks and yes I do think it's the perfect size for just me, especially when some of my systems start to take care of themselves. Thanks for commenting and watching!
Lovely, lovely place. 😍🤗❤️ Lovely, lovely paradise you’re creating.

I had stairs exactly like yours but a friend put up a railing. It’s made everything so much safer.
I like you want to wake up every day with a list of things to do, I'm never happier than when I have projects on the go. It's really what humans are meant to do, not shopping for clothes (!!) , holidays, tv etc. Just living, heaven on earth.
Exactly! I agree. I even talk about my disdain for clothes shopping in one of my upcoming videos! :-)
@@PortugalfromScratch You're obviously my kind of person, my clothes are few & far between & usually second hand.
Do you get sidetracked and end up doing jobs that weren't on your list? If so, do you write them on it so you can have the satisfaction of crossing them off? 😆🥰
Ive been following you on facebook on your blog, your a breath of fresh air, as in real! we have bought a house in Famalicao da Serra in the top of the Serra da Estrella mountain range, that we plan to move to 2023 and find your vlogs both amusing and inspiring :) keep doing what youre doing! Mandy

It's really a beautiful piece of land that you found in Portugal. Your own little paradise 👍
Not small but just enough to work with, especially when on your own. Boa sorte 💪🏼
Much respect from my daughter and I here in the UK. We have been looking at Portugal for the last few months, trying to find something that ticks our boxes. It's encouraging to see others walking their path :) Thanks for sharing, and good luck in your future endeavours !
Have you been looking on www pureportugal.co.uk? I found my place there and it's a well laid out website that really allows your dreams to run wild!
@@PortugalfromScratch yes, thanks, we have been ogling some of the properties on there. We'vve not found the right one yet - we will know it when we see it 😊
@@lazycarper7925 Although residency is something else entirely, anyone from the EU and UK can travel freely to Portugal without a visa, even post-Brexit.
It's fantastic! You have everything you need to create your home: the barn, water sources, some fruit trees and olive trees, great soil, and it's not so big that you will spend all your time fighting weeds. I think that .5 - 1 acre is the perfect size for a single person or couple. The views are amazing and your land is relatively flat terraces which helps. You made a great buy, IMO. I can't wait to see your other videos. My heart loves the countryside because it reminds me so much of where I live (but couldn't ever afford to buy land with water rights). Take care.
Thanks! I agree with all you've said! Where about do you live? Water rights is an interesting concept... water can be tricky, for sure!
@@PortugalfromScratch I live in Southern California. It only became legal to capture rainwater here in 2012! And we are the land of droughts. My water bill is what keeps me from having a larger garden, unfortunately. I have found plants that grow with less water and I use grey water when possible. So watching people in a similar climate grow lovely gardens is heartwarming for me because the climate is great for growing many crops.
Yes I heard recently that catching rainwater in some places isn't allowed. That's hard to imagine but I suppose there are reasons behind it all. Portugal is often on the edge of or in drought so I hope it doesn't go that way... but for the moment I'm enjoying growing my trees and garden and I'm happy to hear that it's something you enjoy seeing!
Love your videos. Your land looks great. I love the way you are doing things around your place. One day at a time. Keep up the videos.
Your website is even more interesting with details of your journey to your off grid life in Portugal. I would recommend your website to anyone here who has just came across your channel.
Thanks! I haven't updated it in awhile... so much to do! But yes, there's some good stuff on there from my early days if anyone is interested... www.portugalfromscratch.com

Oh yes, there are lots of interesting stuff you have written about yourself, your journey, etc. I too wish to find myself a home to settle down. It is kind of inspiring. I too have travelled around a bit though not as much as you did and plan to return to UK again to hopefully sort out something more permanent soon. By the way, I am from Malaysia and I have travelled around a bit as well though never been to Portugal. Look forward to reading more about your off grid journey in Portugal.
So glad I found your channel! You're presently living my future life (near future, I'm hoping to buy my land this fall and move early 2023.) I really appreciate you talking about land size - I've been looking at larger plots as I have 5 acres in the US but it's too much. I think a little goes a long way when you're doing a lot of gardening and living simply. Here's to women moving to Portugal on their own and making their dream place!
A little does go a long way! I might have edited it out of the final video but I do think that half an acre i maybe a tiny bit too small, 3/4 of an acre would be perfect, I think, but only because I also want to plant trees and have a small food forest. A half an acre means I have to make some tough calls as I can't fit all of the trees I'd want, ideally. But still, it's a small thing and I'm perfectly satisfied with the size I have! But given a choice, a wee bit bigger would be good for the trees reason.
@@PortugalfromScratch go for it!! here a lady travelling through Portugal looking for my peace of heaven :)
You are so inspirational!!! Must follow you to keep motivated!!! GO FOR IT!!!
I'm going to join you both! You're living my future life, too. I like the small size of your land. Do you know "Farmer for Fun?" He's a great chap and family in Fundão. They have a farm as well. Maybe you can connect.
I have no idea what I am talking about, but it occurs to me that if you skim all that alguie from your water you can put it in your compost and it should a great additive to it
Ooh let me look that up and see what the mighty Google says... seems like a logical idea to me!
yes, its beautiful and right size to live to entertain and work on your project. Enjoy every bit of it.
Hi from Australia. Looking forward to how you get on. The varied projects will be interesting for you and for us.
Get you. Love your attitude. You got vision. So open about what you paid, that gets me straight away as so many skirt around that bit, been following your instagram and Facebook you got me hooked to your channel from the start.

Just found you! Gorgeous property and in good hands! I look forward to what’s to come!
Lots of admiration for you kirsty, with your little garden of Eden. Your compoohst will be ready in a year or so and by that time will have broken down into some amazing fertilizer. If you get chance to look at a channel called 'Bealtaine Cottage', with Colette, she also makes compoohst for use on her land. We too have a half acre and believe me it is enough for us to manage and anymore would be too much work for us two. I love that you are showing peeps a down to earth account of life on your smallholding and I am wishing you every blessing as you move forward 💚🌱🌿🌞🏡

Excellent! Good luck with your property search and be sure to let me know when you get to the area!
So happy your channel came up in my recommendations. Will be backtracking to your earlier videos and looking forward to more. Thank you from Edmonton, Alberta!
Hi there. If you’re going to use the pond just for irrigation then I would recommend buying some grass carp. They are the main source of fish protein in China but you can buy them online in Europe delivered to your door. They usually arrive at about 4 or 5 cm long but within a year they can weigh a kilo and within three years they could be 5 kg or more in your climate. They will eat all of the algae and duckweed. Also you can feed them on grass (hence the main grass carp.. They will also fertilise the water. Which will in turn give a great boost to your plants :-)
That's crazy! I was just thinking this morning about how I might incorporate plants into my water tank to help keep it clean. Thanks for this, I'll check it out!
I am just one of many, many people watching these videos on Portugal, with a view to making the move to live a simpler life there. Taking notes, it is all very interesting. You are very inspiring X:)

Congrats for laying hands on such a good property. So nice. Enjoy and Cherish every moment.

Just found you, sounds like you have found a perfect spot to live a gentle? happy yes and fun life ahead. Thanks for taking us along 👍
Yes, gentle and quiet and hopefully with a nice connection to be a steward of my land. But with a lot of fun mixed in along the way! :-)
Please be very careful with those stairs ! Life changes after a fall. Beautiful country ! Good luck with all your work ! 👍🌷
I know! They're getting worse, too. Luckily there's a different way down and I'll do some repairs soon or hopefully fix them for good. :-)
Maybe you could make a flying fox from the tree at the top of the stairs? Make a sling to load bags of soil etc???
Very nice BTW You see a giant rock designed to piss you off I see the bottom of a very cool pond.
A pond, you say? Like carved into the rock? Interesting! Sadly, I see parking. I need another space for cars/campervans for when people visit and that'll be it, I think. I also plan a small workshop there so having a spot for deliveries also makes sense. Not a sexy idea but oh well!
new sub..fantastic..look at all the old olive trees.. those are priceless. hope you get a crop to press oil and eat.
I've picked two years in a row and it's hard work but so amazing to have oil from my own trees. And yes... they're beautiful! Suck character, I think. :-)
The consensus here indicates that you need 2 or more avocado trees in order for a tree to produce fruit. I hope some of your neighbors have avocado trees. They are very thirsty too, probably not a problem in Portugal.
I have three threes so hopefully it's ok! They are thirsty and it might be a problem during the brutal and dry Portuguese summer, but I think I have enough water flowing through my land to keep them happy!
Thankyou for sharing your views on your land, seems to me you have the perfect size of plot to work and not be daunted by. I'm kean to see your progression
I little bit bigger would be nice for a little more space for trees... due to that rock screwing up my tree plans! But besides that, it really is a perfect size and I'm so happy to have it!
Wow...amazing and wonderful tour.It is really look natural.Anyway thanks for sharing and best regards from Bali.👍❤🙏
Nice update 👍Need to try to work on your plunge pool summer is coming maybe you can use a IBC tank for now I have seen other UA-camrs useing a IBC tank for a plunge pool by cutting off the top part 👍✌️🤙❤️🇵🇹❤️
Yep I've seen that too but for me I already have a concrete water tank that needs repair, so I'm going to design a plunge pool into it somehow. It's essential in these parts, for sure!
Hello from Calgary Alberta. Coming over in September to my village house near CB, while I looks for my Quinta. Great video. Down to earth and honest.
Another subscriber.
Hello! Cool! There aren't a lot of Canadians in these parts but seems like lots of people are keen to come.
You can use the large rock as an outdoor sitting area with potted plants around.
I have plans for a sitting area up top so the rock is destined to be parking which isn't super exciting but still important. But thanks for the suggestion!
IT'S IN PARADISE! I WAIT MORE VIDEOS
Thanks! More coming, I'll see if I can make it a weekly thing. THanks for watching!
The water is most likely near-surface ground water that flows underneath from higher grounds. Making a collection of rocks stacked together inside the terrain can make sub-surface water appear at edges of terraces like these.
Hi i just founs your chanell belive me its not accident you are very honest sharing your life without trying to sugar coded and talking in heart of a lots of yong and briliant ladyes who couldnt find their dreems in north america in canada its so imposible to live with low budget in your dreems and purtugal is a good place to start but i didnot know people using chimical in village too .maybe they dont have knowledge a bout it talk to them if you can good luck stay safe.
Thanks! Glad you're liking it and thanks for the positive feedback. :-) With the spraying thing... there's a fine balance to strike with not coming in and telling people how to do things who have been doing it that way forever. I'm hoping that by doing things a different way and showing that it works that people will gradually change how they take care of their land. Lots of land here is quite neglected because the older people in the village are dying but younger people don't have jobs here or prefer to live in the cities so a lot of land is for sale and that's why we're seeing so many immigrants in these rural areas. Most people who move into these parts for this lifestyle aren't the types to spray so I hope that also slowly changes things, too.
Thank you for sharing this! You are an inspiration! Looking forward to more videos!
Wow thank you for sharing
It’s helped me a lot to visually the size
Awesome work
Looking to see next video 😁
Great! Yes... visualising the size is of land hard. It's all so abstract!
Refreshingly honest and likeably down to earth. I wish you well and will be interested to follow your story. I'm doing something similar on Gran Canaria, with its own challenges, but so far haven't mustered the confidence to bare all on UA-cam videos! @@PortugalfromScratch I'm in GTA, yes there's a big Portuguese community in Toronto.
A Bay Laurel tree. Would be nice for your own bay leaves for seasoning food pickling and food storage. Bay Laurel keeps the wevils out of flour and beans etc. And kumquat tree. I was told that if you let dill plants go to seed the seed are coriander.
I'd love a bay tree and a friend actually has one for me but I need the space for it. Have some planning to do. Dill plants turn into dill seeds... no? Otherwise I'm not sure where dill seeds would come from? I have some going to seed now in the garden, looking forward to saving them.
Kristy, just subscribed and can't wait to see where you go with the land. I would wish you would include a 'rough' timeline for the projects if you're able. Checked out your maps of Africa and they are wonderful! What talent you have. What made you settle in Portugal?
I'll certainly do a video about my projects... one of many on my list including the reasons I settled here. I'll cover all of that at some point but originally my reason was plain and simple - cheap land and cost of living. Not so exciting a reason but now I know there's so much more to the place! Glad you like my maps! :-)
If you are interested in permaculture I suggest looking into Kernza. Developed by Wes Jackson and The Land Institute with the hope of creating grain crops that do not need replanting. Just harvest in the fall.
Thanks, I'll check it out. I've never thought about grain crops because of space but who knows what the future holds!

Beautiful property. Lovely views too. Is that another house behind yours? Neighbors perhaps?
Yes it's basically a glorified tool shed owned by two separate people with land on either side. I don't love that it's so close but by view goes the other way and they're all very nice and not around that much.
@@PortugalfromScratch They are nice people which helps. And in the future if they want to sell their land, you might be ready to expand your smallholding. :)
Yep! If I ever get money again I'll certainly look to expand around me. The neighbours are lovely but people here tend to spray everything with chemicals and many of us in this area (both Portuguese and immigrants) would love to see the land cared for without spraying. It does seem like things are changing slowly.
@@PortugalfromScratch I hadn't thought about protecting your land from chemicals. That's unfortunate that the neighbors use chemicals instead of natural methods.
