- Heavy rains are expected to continue through at least Sunday afternoon, with a flash flood warning in effect until 3:15 p.m. for east-central Cook County.

It's not fake, and it's not a giant "manhole cover" either. It's a large grate that covers/ventilates stormwater infrastructure. I found one on Google Maps at West Fulton and North Canal St. Not the same one, but it explains the video. 41.886676,-87.639856

Every once in a while, it does rain so much so fast that it causes air pressure to build up in the drainage system causing water to shoot out of the manholes. I just saw it happen this summer as well but I’m a few hours south. I figured this problem happens in Chicago too

I grew up in a chicago suburb. Our basements would flood so often we put things up on paint cans. Even then, many were up to two feet deep. Rains and rains, doesnt stop. In 1972 the kraft macaroni plant roof collapsed, fatally injuring my aunt, mother of4 children. Despite the heavy rains workers were told to keep working, late shift. Not surprised to hear it still floods.

I live in the near west suburbs and the water in my basement was real. Something with the metro Sanitation District...if they don't open a lock early enough it backwashes up the sewers into the streets and basements! Ongoing blame game as long as I can remember!

Chicago, Vegas, New York, DC. Massive underground tunnels, bases, emergency facilities and structures 80 stories deep. The heat maps show a lot of activity.
My first day living in Savanah, Georgia , was raining cats and dogs . Ill never forget the citys drainage system backed up from flooding and when the tide came back in because the river drains into the ocean every manhole in downtown was doing exactly this. Like gysers. Pretty cool to see. It just drains back out eventually.

This is 100% real. Though it is not a manhole, it is a grated air shaft for the Tunnel and Reservoir project. The underground tunnel holds sewer water during heavy rainfall in tunnels under the city. When there is enough air pressure, they can do this.

In Charlotte, NC, the manhole covers actually do pop up and smack the undercarriage of your vehicle during a storm with a lot of rain. The first time I experienced it, I seriously thought I had broken an axle because of the sound and feeling it made.
